  1. A wife/girlfriend is a valuable tool when it comes to glueing up! Just make sure she knows exactly what you want her to do!
  2. All my joints get the once over with the stanley plane shown in the picture with my saw! Infact those two tools are my favourite I don't have any plans to buy power tools (I have a pillar drill at home) I have a router but I like cutting pickups cavities and such by hand I find it more rewarding! So now we've persuaded you to build a guitar in your apartment I want to see some plans!
  3. I'd advise against a card table If it need to be portable go with a folding workbench (workmate it the uk not sure about over the pond) having the table rocking and a rolling will be a pain and it will also be the wrong height which will do your back in which will mean you'll have to play your guitar sitting down! Whats wrong with a black jazzmaster with gold hardware it sound pretty cool add a tortoiseshell scratchplate and you'd be done!
  4. sloping roof is much better for acoustics than a parallel floor and ceiling! The ideal room would have a sloping ceiling and no parallel walls. Banging your head not so good.
  5. Oops I meant to say that it was a Bow Saw atleast that is what it's called over here but I've also seen tree trimming saws called that they are not the same thing! The blades can be sorced but most people just use sections of bandsaw blades. As for the mess yeah thats always a problem I have a huge sheet that sits under my bench and when not in use i roll it up against the legs I don't use much sand paper i tend to use planes and spoke shaves where ever possible and as they deposit fairly large chunks of wood on the floor dust isn't a major problem for me but I have used the vacume technique with huge suck-sess (sorry) An old extractor fan with a length dryer hose works well too and is alot quieter Although I have not used it myself. EDIT I decided to while away three minutes... firstly an ebay search for those of you in the US http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?f...&category0= secondly I found this site ages ago whilst trying to find one myself but before i got stuck in I went to this antique tools place back where i live and one of the many tools i persuaded my dad to bank roll was my bowsaw http://www.geocities.com/plybench/bowsaw.html
  6. thanks mexnoob! One thing about my post when i said i cut 3mm thick headstock plates i meant the actuall veneer cutting not shaping themI cut them about 4 mm thick but a bit of planing soon smoothed out the irregularities!
  7. I'd get a saw like this... http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj242/j...ct/CIMG5156.jpg A coping saw doesn't have enough tension for cutting thick planks of wood accurately but these are great (I have cut three mm thick headstock plates with it) they do take time though!. You can find them on ebay or if you want i could measure it up and you could build your own one! With the exception of the occasional use of use of a pillar drill I don't think any power tools are necessary they just make things faster/easier and they can also wreck things faster and easier! PS that bench is in my bedroom so don't let no garde/shed/garage put you off!
  8. Before this gets out of hand i think everyone should read this. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentagram This site is about guitars you have to let people express their opinions though and i think that's all avengers was doing. It's very easy to lose the meaning of a post on the internet. And I do think your comment about zealots was a step to far any opinions like that should be kept to yourself. I have no religious views except that when people start slating peoples beliefs trouble nearly always ensues (you should come to glasgow for a celtic rangers match). My personal opinion for your guitars would be to put one symbol on it in a contrasting colour. Stick around man it's worth it.
  9. spoke shave rasp and sandpaper should sort out the belly contours! :killingme Beautiful guitar by the way.
  10. Limited/special edition doesn't really mean anything not it's own. If I set out out to build 250000 guitars and not a single more I have produced a limited edition guitar and 249000 others. As to special edition same thing applies 250000 bog standard telecasters but wait I've put pinstripes on ehm, that's a bit special suddenly you have 250000 special edition telecasters. I know you are talking about amps but it applies to everything it's the ratio that counts 50 special/limited edition in a run of 50000 that's pretty good! you are not likely to see another one down the dog and duck of a friday night. +1 for what borge said
  11. Bonjourno! Welcome. Wrong forum but we can't be perfect all of the time! Well done buying the book!
  12. don't you mean volutes are all equal but some are more equal than others?
  13. it's pretty much timber everywhere... guitar's looking good but you're not suppose the lick the dust!
  14. Kenny no offence man lovely guitar but i'd rather see the front than the back And a close up of the inlay would have been cool! And clean your sheets! Daniel you almost toppled scott from his lofty perch! Jehle for me it has to be boobs but i do like your resonator can you alter the sound by opening the box I think your photos were ace mike and your guitar looks sweet. Scott I knew I was going to vote for yours as soon as i saw it It i really like it and am glad to hear it's a slap and pop monster with looks like that it oughta be! Looks like everybody did a good job
  15. I'll start by completely ripping off the entire lid! It's the extra length of string that has the major effect. The tension is spread evenly through the string (we'll pretend friction doesn't exist) not just the playable length. that combined with elasticity of the string etc. So in addition to stringing through the body you could stick a reverse p-bass type headstock on so that the low string has even more length.
  16. The amp sounds fun though I am more of a just a volume control on my amp kid of a guy. It won't have a positive or negative effect on the sound one will sound like a 100 watt amp and one will sound like a 50 watt amp play with it and find out for yourself. There isn't a right mic really if it sounds good it is good. Condensers generally have a much flatter frequency responce so you get a more accurate sound. Dynamics normally are less flat but way less likely to be damaged by huge loud noises and mechanical interference (singer banging it off the ground) One is not the lesser of the other they just have different uses although the line is so blurred it's almost non existent. There are exceptions to the rules Ribbon mic's are dynamic mic's but I'd s**t a brick if I even slightly knocked it where as I have seen a neuman stuck infront of a really loud amp it's just so well made that it can cope with massive noise levels. For an absolutely massive sound rip out a speaker from an amp and stick an xlr on the end
  17. SM57s are great SM58s also work pretty damn well. I use AKG C1000s alot mainly because it's all i've got and they handle any volume your ears are likely to stand and they are great for acoustic instrument aswell as they are condenser mic's. I'm not sure what 150 dollars buys you in the US but if your volume doesn't go hugely high I really think the audio technika 4033 is a brilliant mic to have lying around for the money especially as it will do a pretty competent job on vocals! I'm wary of cheap microphne companies generally not to say they aren't any good but I'd rather a buy a named brand even if I have to buy second hand to afford it! EDIT maybe not a 4033 if you are talking about live micing!
  18. Quality use of the the word arse so often confused with a word that implies some sort of donkey horse hybrid thing. The population in australia is going to increase ten fold in the next few weeks. You know there must be a gap in the TV market for "Find me A strict Luthier thats got talent Idol academy of fame"
  19. Guys I have another probably stupid question. I specialise. What about using a piezo bridge as a sustainer driver? Tonemonkey was right this is an epic thread!
  20. Yeah just poor a bottle of jack on it once in a while! or beer! and these were my two least gross suggestions You know in all seriousness A "sacraficial" scratchplate made out of an unfinished fragrant wood would work wouldn't it and any damage on it would just release more fragrance! Does zebrano smell of turd or something?
  21. spray a light coat of clear on it when the smell fades scratch off a little bit and inhale! scratch and sniff guitar! OR even better design a retro fit scratch and sniff pick guard you could have different flavours yum. My cat pissed on my stereo it was still warm it was not nice.
  22. You have friends?! don't rub it in!
  23. my humps, my humps, my lovely neck lumps?! Makes sense to me prostheta but I but my doctor says i have an overactive plausibility gland! basically you cut through fibres and if they are under tension when the timber is straight and square you're going to get a shift of some sort the right choice in wood grain it will make it negligible that's my view i'm sure someone more knowledgable will correct me!
