  1. Hey Chris, What are ya gonna do with it, If I may Ask?
  2. If the body isn't drilled for a bridge yet and neck pocket is for a bolt on, It shouldn't be a problem to bolt that sucker up.
  3. I like the strat david. That Dragon Kills! On to the topic at hand, The idea of what I shoulda did ALWAYS comes to you After somebody mentions it, Huh? Back in the day I had an Ibanez Roadstar II with Cherry Sunburst and a single HB and Wanted to put a single coil in at the neck and not knowing what I was doing, Routed it out, using a template I cut out and it came out perfect. Suprised me to no end. I drilled a hole with one of those long drill bits from the neck pocket to the HB pocket and ran my wires thru that, mounted a mini toggle and strat jack plate and a single coil mounting ring and I was a happy boy.
  4. Doing a search for Envirotex, I came across this project using it to create a marble finish, IF you're interested in that, It's Right Here. Envirotex Project I think the first one would be the easiest to attempt and using the envirotex would work great on JUST the top since it wants to run down the sides, you'd have to tape off the top so none would seep thru. After reading this post, I think I might try it to see waht happens. If I do, I'll post some pics in the In Progress area.
  5. Rhavin, First of all, I wouldn't recommend you doing this if you aren't up to the small mechanix involved. I'm in NO way trying to disrespect you with this but, IF you were a little more mechanically inclined, I'd so go for it. Get a Book on guitar repair and bone up on it for a while, I can't Recommend "Guitar Player Repair Guide" By Dan Erlewine Enough, as it has all the nuts and bolts needed to understand many aspects of the guitar and If you're still game, "Build Your Own Electric Guitar" by Melvyn Hiscock, he walks you thru building 4 complete guitars and it's easy to understand also Secondly, $225. isn't bad at all to completely repaint your guitar. I think it's very reasonable anyway.
  6. I'm with Mushy on this one, I Love My Carvin Neck and I've bought quite a few over the years. The warmoth nex are great n all but myself, I'm tite as hell and didn't wanna shell out what they wanted for one. I haven't had a USACG Neck before but most of the folks on here can't be wrong as they haven't led me wrong before.
  7. Sounds like a large task to me. If It were me, Remove all the hardware then I'd start by slicing the top off altogther. Don't change anything but the top, by just sanding it down by about a 1/4 inch, route out any wood inside that isn't nessesary, then find myself a nice maple top to put on. Glue it down, then With a flush cutting router bit, run it around the outside edge and neck pocket. Next you'd need to plan where you want you're pickups and if it's rear routed for the controls, it's piece of cake to hook up your pickups. Route for your pickups then drill any control locations you wanna add then it's time Put a finish on the top. if this were my first project, I'd stick to a nice easy wipe on poly, Fine sand it to 600 grit and polish. Mount all your hardware again and you should be ready to go.
  8. If you already have the body and it's routed for singles you'll have to route for Humbucking Pickups. Again, If it's already routed, you could always use the tele bridge that holds a humbucker and route to edge of the screw holes in the bridge plate. What someone said was probably that you have MINI Humbuckers and you have stacked Singles like Genbloke mentioned. Most HB pickups ARE the same size but you should wait till you have one to go by or at least make sure that a pickup ring is centered properly and you shouldn't have any problems.
  9. Mount the neck, Taking a straight edge down both sides of the neck, mark lines that will locate the outter reaches of your pickup route, then take a template or pickup cover and place it where you want it and draw a line around that, then mount your template and route it out. Next you'll need a long drill to get your wiring access from one pickup hole to the next.
  10. Hey Rick, Sounds like you got a great deal and sounds ripe for a total custom job, looking nothing like anything out there though. I love modifying something I messed up and making it look better that originally planned.
  11. The ridges you speak of are Known as Either Splines or Knurles. And yes you should drill a little undersize so the splines have a nice solid grab into the wood.
  12. I believe it was actually Floyd Rose himself that used to drill larger holes and set in Maple Dowels just to make the surface more solid in case you're over active wit the whammy. On one of my early trials on a basswood body I had very small inserts and HAD to set the posts into some hardwood because they were so small and they wanted to pull out almost immediately. You'll probably have to set them in before you route the slot for the trem block tho since you won't have the clearance needed after the dowels are in there. As in, You have to route off part of the dowels.
  13. I saw some nice guitars and bass's on Ebay recently By a company Called Agile and One in particular caught my eye as it has a full Pearl Top. Les Paul Style, Set Neck and I believe it was only 269. American Dollars. Any feedback on em would be appreciated as I think I'm gonna get it but would still like to hear what ya'll think about em. They are in the Buy Now category not for general bidding. Ebay Agile LP Style
  14. I think the guy is mistaken If ya don't mind my saying so. It looks to me like a Maple Top on it but that's probably what the guy was told about the top. edit:Yep, It's some kinda film of the maple, somehow fastened to the top of the thing. Possibly Mylar with a maple like print on it.
  15. This in NO way reflecting you folks on the board but I've found it hard to find wood as well and have come to the conclusion that most of the wood dealers either on the net or at wood shops have no clue to what a joy it is to make a guitar and play it after you've put your heart into it. It seems like the dealers aren't holding back information but unsure of what it is we wanna do with the stuff. They're there and have the stuff we need but MOST of the time it's that we aren't being clear enough with them about what it is we want either. My local sawmill have been great in the past and haven't "kept the good stuff For Themselves" and have given me Exactly what I wanted. Some of the wood pieces we ask for are pretty hard to find and or endagered and can't be found. Just my 2 cents for what it's worth.
  16. Have you seen the Jem Knockoffs on Ebay? For only 179 it might be worthwhile project. Ebay Guitar
  17. What you wanna do, is on the inside curves, make relief cuts, right up to the line. The outside curves aren't too bad with a jigsaw.
  18. If you're gonna make a Tele and don't mind buying a blank from a good company, Try USA Custom Guitars. In the raw material section of the site they have Mahogany Blanks for like 60 bucks I think. That's IF you don't have any luck with the sawmill. They're more than sufficient for a tele body.
  19. If you have a hobby shop close to you, they have those inexpensive Xacto razor saws that are handy for that as well and they don't cost an arm and a leg.
  20. Did you open up the crack so the glue would flow down in there? Cuz ya know, they say that a glue joint is stronger than the wood itself and if it's weak in that area it may break again if it didn't get all the way down there to the stop point.
  21. Take this with a large grain of salt, but if it happened to me, I'd remove the neck, gently separate the crack with a wood wedge and apply a large dose of CA down in the gap and clamp it up with some wood shims to protect the back and neck pocket, and see what happens. You'll probably have to adjust the finish where the split is but that shouldn't be much of a challenge for you. Do you have aneck plate on there or are they ferrules? If it's a neck plate you may wanna try separating it like above and give it good dose of hide glue instead of the CA. See, the hide glue doesn't have the water that regular titebond has either. Again, that's what i'd do if it were mine.
  22. Just a quik thought Fender4me, If you haven't ordered the fret board why dontcha get one slotted and radiused? The ones I saw were only a bit more to have it done already but to me it was worth it. But then again, I'm lazy and have no desire to complete a whole instrument with all cuts made by myself.
  23. I love this place. Thanx guys for the input. Quik favor Duff, On my photoblog there's the color I'm going for. Was your Electric blue like that? That Ultramarine blue is an Acrylic color and won't work with lacquer.
  24. At Pep Boys Auto Store, I saw some Chameleon color in a spray can of touch up paint. I have a cover for my mobely that's like that and it looks great. Fairly economic as well.
  25. Thanx www, I did that as well, and came up with auto color paints but I don't even have any idea what color this would have been used on Auto wise. I did see this place called Tower Paint and Decorateing that will fill spray cans which might be the only chance BUT they charge 14.95 to color match. The only down side.
