  1. That's how my first came out, Like number 2 Seriously, after you made a mistake, you learn from it BIG TIME.
  2. I don't mean to insult but I think 50's very reasonable for a maple body blank, IF it's maple. The last time I bought Mahogany, the stock itself was $30 and that left me with all the mill work and I'd pay 20 for the millwork and glueing to do but that's just me.
  3. Maple is cheap, try making this neck and see if it works for you. 28" x 2 1/2" square stock. If you have a Home Depot close to you get a maple board there 3/4" x 2 1/2" and cut 3 pcs. 28" long and glue them together. Mark a line at 20" and that will be where the nut will be located. The remaining 8" will be the headstock, now from that line, draw the 13-15 degree angle. You'll now wanna route the truss rod channel, Before you cut the headstock angle so you have a nice level surface to route on. Make sure to have the fingerboard and truss rod you wanna use BEFORE starting this project but, Now crank up the bandsaw and cut that angle as straight as the Pope and flat sand it. You'll wanna use a vernier cap on that head since it will clean it up nicely. Once you get this far, If you still want some assistance lemme know, I'll be glad to help, if you want.
  4. The New Wood Finishing Book By Michael Dresdner is the place to go. It shows a simple window booth and Collapsible garage booth.
  5. The Other Perry on here has a good place to start, and he uses the same way I did mine except for My stock was 2 1/2" square. Perry Ormsby's Guitar Building
  6. Hey Matt, I have built my own neck before and turned out crap BUT I do have the experience and the next one will be class! Do you have Melvyn Hiscock's book "Make your Own Electric Guitar"? that LP style is what I was goin for and it was OK but I screwed the neck joint. The neck for the V, I'm gonna do a scarf joint on Maple. Kathy's Website I made this scarf joint jig and it's great but I made it after I screwed the first neck. If you don't wanna go thru that, mark out the angle on a 2 1/2" square stock of wood, I'd buy a fingerboard for your first neck and lay it to the edge of the angle on top where the truss rod channel gets routed then mark the edge of where you want the neck to stop, a little beyond the last fret, cut it and round it slightly. There's a lot more to it but than that so when I hear from you again, I'll finish this, after I find out where you stand on this part.
  7. Gosh, That's Purdy. Seriously, That's the most beautiful top. Ya can tell lotsa work went into it being as it's burl.
  8. Nope. I'm a lazy guy and had to work the last few days and Saturday is my day off, and when I get most of my guitar work done. I don't like getting started on a project and being stopped to go to my other job.
  9. What kinda wood did you decide on the base body? Mahogany or Walnut? I was thinkin about using Basswood with Maple top but don't know what thickness the top should be, Carved top or Flat and contoured?
  10. An Epiphone Apollo, Part of slammer line Epiphone did and snuffed.
  11. If you're set on the scarf joint and handy making jigs, this little gal will cut the scarf joint perfect. It's at Kathy Matsushita's website. She makes really nice acoustic guitars but the same tools can work both ways. Kathy Matsushita's Web Page
  12. I kinda agree with ya Maiden69 But.....I don't wanna use rear ferrules and Can't bring myself to set rivets thru there to have the strings come thru. I am gonna try it and IF it doesn't look right, I'll go the other route of using some kinda ferrules. I thought Like you did at first also.
  13. Brass sheeting is fairly cheap, I think first I'll try it out with that and see how she looks and go from there.
  14. I agree with you guyz but the bindings gotta go since I'm rubbish at Binding. Gold Anodized Aluminum on Black. The bridge is Gold and I wanna find some tuners that I'm happy with in gold as well. I was gonna use the neck from the guitar this ones based on but I had the idea to make another neck for it since I have all the wood and the truss rod and fingerboard for 1 more neck.
  15. My first thoughts were picking up some Brass sheeting, and forming the edges with a 45 degree around the sides and dimpled holes at the string thru holes. I may change that to aluminum and have it Gold anodized. The body is gonna be black Lacquer. I'm still trying to work out how to paint it with diamond shapes on top by spraying thru that diamond pierced decorative sheeting.
  16. I'm calling this part the Devil's Bowtie. It's an Idea I had for the strings to come thru instead of ferrules. Originally, I didn't wanna use a lot of the top for ornamentation but wanna try it and see if looks good or not. Lemme know what you think.
  17. Yep, This design seems to cry out for a Curly Maple Top with Blue or Green stain.
  18. I need to work on this some more but I've been in pain with some dental work I had done and haven't had the motivation to get started again.
  19. Copy of My First Guitar Build. Kinda Warlocky. Don't have a name for it but thought that sounded strange, and strange is good. Copy Of My First Thread
  20. It looks like a nice chocolate.....Hold me back before I take a big bite of that..
  21. At Home Depot today I saw a Ryobi 12" Tabletop Drill Press for $149. I have a few Ryobi tools and have generally been happy with every one of em except the router. They forgot to pack the collet wrench in the box and I had to send for it and it got here in a few weeks but that's small beans.
  22. Being a hobbyist builder, I've had some cheap tools and some expensive ones but there are those items you use maybe once every 2 years or so and in my looking for a peghead reamer in my Stewmac Catalog (which were pricey) I found a General Tools T-Handle Reamer for 14 bucks at Home Depot that did the job admirably. I thought I'd pass this on to other builders or Newbies out there that may be building one of those economy Kits that take cheapo vintage style tuning machines. Ya see, They drilled the machine holes a little too small and My first thought was to drill them out, which I may have done had it not been for remembering back to my first try back in the day and the hole came out too large and needed to be filled and re-drilled. I just thought I'd throw this out there, Having been there, done that before.
  23. Carl Thmpson Basses were made with Purpleheart and Bubinga, He's the guy who made Les Claypool from Primus some basses. They Look Fantastic! I forget the web address but if you google it, It should come. He made a small amount of electric guitars that were impressive but there were only a few of em. Carl Thompson Basses
  24. I'm at the point where I need to figure If it'll be a glue in or bolt on. Until then I'm at a stand still. The warlockington, is getting her pickup route done and a full neck shim today. The neck for the V may get the scarf joint today. Dunno Yet tho.
  25. I'm gonna try Pop Rivets made of Stainless Steel, If I Can Find Them.
