  1. WOAH! What is that? Treble/Bass/Blend/Volume, more or less? What are you gonna do with it? And this is different than the one you did for the Aria, right?
  2. There are a lot of production hybrids on the market with both acoustic and electric pickups. Look at some of these: Taylor T5 Tom Anderson Crowdster Plus Ovation VXT Ibanez Montage Michael Kelly Hybrid Hamer Duotone Custom One of the big issues to cover is strings. Bronze wound strings contribute to the acoustic tone, but electric (magnetic) pickups have a hard time with them. Most people go with electric strings, for that reason. However, DR produces strings they call Zebras, which are built for hybrids, and in my opinion are the best compromise available. Hope that helps! Oh, and as far as bringing an acoustic simulator on board, it would work, but why not just go with a synth guitar if you're gonna do all that?
  3. I think my biggest question on this deals with fitting a strat pickguard to the tele's upper bout. You said it uses the tele upper bout, but did you modify it? I didn't think strat pickguards fit on teles.
  4. Wez, would you take some more pics? I'm especially interested in that Stratatele. I have a huge piece of mesquite I'm saving for a project much like that.
  5. Are you talking about router rails?
  6. Wow Doug. What a great accomplishment. It turned out really nice too. The binding on the fretboard really adds some class.
  7. I disagree with Bob. I think it looks awesome. He's saying he doesn't like how it looks with three pickups. Incidentally, I really dig how that pickguard goes around the jack. Can't wait to see how it comes together.
  8. Any of those three techniques should work. That being said, Prostheta and MiKro know what they're talking about. I'd say Scotchbrite is the way to go. I'm giving you theory. They're giving you practical experience. Plus, their way sounds easier.
  9. Well, to start with, use satin on the neck and gloss on the body. I assume you're asking about hot to do the transition like the one on that photo. First, I've never tried to do this, but I'll offer some theory. As long as you're using finishes with the same sort of base, you're going to be fine. Finishes from the same product line would be even better. Then you're going to finish everything in gloss. On the LAST coat, you're going to apply a satin finish in the areas you want to be satin. Why? Because all clear finishes are naturally glossy. They actually add an agent to finish to make it look satin. If you finish over satin with gloss, you get gloss. If you finish over gloss with satin, you get satin. Maybe someone can confirm this, but I believe that's what I've read.
  10. I saw this and thought, hey, if I were selling guitars, this would be at least a $50 upcharge. May it would be $100 if I buried it in a spot where it could never be retrieved. Pretty cool device, don't you think? It's like the thing they put in pets. http://www.carvinguitars.com/products/SNG1?utm_source=newsletter04192012a&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=snagg
  11. It's used mostly for acoustic soundboards. I'm looking for something like that right now. Where did you find it?
  12. I mean, sure, that's entirely true. But it takes some people years to get to a place where they can buy a good bandsaw. Until then, a jigsaw does the job nicely, and it's much easier to change a jigsaw blade than a bandsaw blade. I still use mine a lot.
  13. Keep moving forward, Bob. The goal of the first build is to finish.
  14. Anxious to see your results, and congratulations for being bold enough to go against the grain.
  15. Learning to do it correctly with the router is probably best, but then again... http://www.luthiersfriend.com/robosander/robosander.html
  16. Wait - Are you rough cutting with something else first? I've typically rough cut with a jigsaw and then finished it off with the router. However, I've recently moved to the RoboSander, to avoid tearout.
  17. I LOVE that Padauk/Wenge one. Does Padauk oxidize brown or does it stay orange? I can't remember.
  18. There's no reason that shouldn't work, but why do you need it, or a compound radius, for that matter? Are you doing string bends or something?
  19. I don't know. I've seen some really great oak acoustics. There are a lot of woods I like that aren't used in production guitars.
