  1. Since Perry pretty much covered it all (very good post I might add, you will do well to learn from it) I'll just give a more direct response. I charge around $65 for a level and dress and around $130+ for a refret and so far have had nothing but very happy customers.
  2. That is what I said.... Cause and effect. The cause is I like the look of headstock's on guitars, the effect is that I then hate the look of headless guitars. So is it then inaccurate for me to say that I hate headless guitars? No.
  3. Are you a maverick? Those personality tests are so fun. IMO your a communicator (just from reading your stuff) but I am a maverick so forgive me if I sound harsh. My dads a communicator and some times we don't get along because of my shortness and his longwindedness. All I'm saying is there are a crap load of people on this planet, and all have different tastes. Your guitar is unique, it stands out from the crowd, and a lot of people don't like things that stand out. Back to the personally tests, the majority of the population (like 85%) are preservers that hate change and anything new. If *you* are happy with your guitar design (and you should be proud of it, very well done and it looks cool) than thats all that matters. Personally I hate headless guitars, I like the look of a nice headstock. Does that comment make me have "prejudice" towards headless designs? No, thats just my personal opinion. Just remember, opinions are like butts, everyones got one, and they all stink.
  4. Your taking GOTM a wee bit too seriously. We have had numerous discussions on this in the past and the concessions is that 90% of the members vote on impulse for the guitar that has the most wow factor/shininess/whatever you want to call it (thats why you see a lot of colored quit and flame top guitars win). It is *not* a test to see which guitar is better, or would do better in the marketplace. Don't feel bad if your guitar doesn't win, it really means nothing. FWIW your guitar is really unique and cool. But tons of people hate unique guitars, just look at how many gibsons and fenders sell to prove my point.
  5. My vote went to Hydrogeoman with marcovis a close second. I usually don't like teles, but his flows so well and the execution is great. Very nice guitar I'd be proud to own.
  6. Exactly. I was only counting the wood/hardware per guitar. I've spent so much on tools it makes my head spin.
  7. I haven't purchased one since I started building. I can build something nicer than what you get in a store for less cost, and it's exactly what I want. Plus you get the satisfaction of building it yourself.
  8. I have for sale my wii that I purchased on December 17th 2006. It comes with 4 wii-motes, 2 nunchucks, and 2 wireless gamecube controllers. It has 5 of the most highly rated wii games and 7 gamecube games. Wii games: Tiger wooods 07 Super Mario Galaxy Zack and Wiki Metroid Prime 3 Wii sports Gamecube games: Medal of honor frontline Medal of honor European assault (considered by many to be the best MOH game) Metroid Prime Metroid Prime 2 Final Fantasy crystal chronicles Rainbow six 3 Star wars rebel strike: rogue squad III It also has a few downloaded games including ocarina of time, super mario, the nes mario, and a few others. All in all I payed more than $800 for everything listed. I'm looking to get $600 for everything. It's all in perfect condition, the games have no scratches and the wiimotes/console work flawlessly. So for $600 you get all the metroid prime series, a crap load of Gamecube and Wii games, and the hard to find wii console. It doesn't get much play time any more, so I'm selling everything to buy another 360 so my brother and I can play online at the same time. I am willing to negotiate on the price a little bit.
  9. ...and UPS will report them all as "delivered". What a dangerous assumption. If you have a problem with UPS it should be because of actual issues you had with them, not just strait up illogical hate.
  10. Are you going to roberto venn? Thats so cool. I'm thinking about attending soon. Nice guitar too
  11. Yeah I'm thinking of building one of those, but it works well like this so I just have not gotten around to it.
  12. The replacement wood finally arrived, so the building can now get underway. Some people were asking me how I joint the top/back with a hand plane so here are some pictures. The wood is elevated around an inch or so off of a stable flat surface (in this case a table) and the plane is turned on it's side so the blade is 90 to the joint. The wood is clamped down so it doesn't move and than you can plane to your hearts content ensuring that the blade is being held exactly 90 to the work. That plane is an old stanley thats over 100 years old. I picked it up at a garage sale for $30 and it's in great condition. It just takes a few strokes of that to make a perfect surface.
  13. I got mine from harbor freight maybe a year or so ago and it was $20, I guess that deal is no longer current if you couldn't find it.
  14. I hope you didn't hurt the neck while hammering, that rest doesn't look like it's supporting it at all. FWIW I always press my frets in, a small investment in tools ($20 1 ton arbor press) and your on your way to much easier/quicker/more uniform fret jobs. It can be done both ways with excellent results, but I've found that pressing them in yields better results with less effort. One thing that worries me about your build is the area where the nut sits. It could be an optical illusion from the pictures, but it looks very wide and unevenly so. what width nut are you putting in there? It's looking great so far, I really like the offset dots on the neck, I get tired of seeing them in the center all the time ya know? Those benches really are nice! I have one that my grandpa built ages ago and it's solid as a rock and the perfect depth for clamp solid bodies down and being able to work around them.
  15. How would you know that? Or you could cheat like I do and buy one of these. Yes I know it's $20 and I could do without it, but it's $20 well spent IMO for less hassle and more speed/accuracy.
  16. I use one similar to the true north design (I copied it from his pictures). It's not as stable as one like Jammy's, but it if fully adjustable so you don't have to build one for every shape. Link Look at all his pictures to get some ideas for some other jigs as well.
  17. Or better yet, go find a 7 string guitar you like and copy it's measurements. True, true...but chances are he's already got a 6 string. I was just going with the most accessible approach. With a little leg work one could probably find a 7 string that they really liked the feel of, but if you've got a 6 string laying around and a good ruler, then you're set. Well it does give you an excuse to go to the music store and play tons of guitars.

  19. Rich pretty much hit the nail on the head so I'll just answer the original question. My first guitar was pretty crappy technically and cosmetically, but very much playable and had a good sound.
  20. I've also used stewmacs vintage amber and found it yellow. I did the same thing Myka did and added a bit of brown and red to the mix and it turned out perfect.
  21. USPS is doing pretty good job for me at the moment. huh, when i get tracking info from usps, it doesnt show anything like that at all. it will say that they were notified, then it will say it is delivered. nothing in between. It might be different for international shipments.
  22. I use cam clamps for most jobs, but I use GO-BARS for bracing work. IMO there is no substitute for the speed and accuracy you get with them.
