  1. If you want it to splinter less, I would suggest a finer blade with... I can't remember if its higher speeds or lower speeds... I just remember if you set your spindle speed too fast on a CNC mill, you'll melt the wax you're cutting lol. Someone correct me on that. I also would have moved my drawing of the template over about 6 inches to avoid having those knots in it. Knots have a tendancy to fall out or splinter or make ugly colors with paint. I like the design!
  2. I think the fingerboard's fine. It looks neat. I've actually always wanted a fretless neck with graphite laminates that run up the fretboard directly under the strings. It'd save me a lot in aluminum tape and it probably wouldn't change my sound as much
  3. They hole up in basswood, which is the equivelant of wooden cheese. There's also a few redwood builds with strings through on here I believe.
  4. You don't need a pickguard to be able to switch pickups. Everything would just be routed on the backside, and the slot for your switch, and holes for your knobs. Then if you decide you want a pickguard, you put it on. Now if you do this, then you will have your screw holes in the body, and most likely not go back to one without a guard, but it at least give you the option in the beginning. If you front route it - you have no choice - you need a guard! Maybe I am not understanding your comment? Actually, I misunderstood your comment. I thought you were suggesting that I not use a switch i was running on 2 hours of sleep yesterday and I had a hangover. Sorry about the confusion! [edit] Most of the guitars I've had have all had something changed on them. Unfortunately all the stuff I could get my hands on never quite matched. For example, I had a gold bridge on a black and white guitar, and that's it. On my bass, I have 1 gold knob on a black body with silver pinstriping and 2 silver knobs, and a brass nut. Kinda junky, but the mixture of colors kinda stuck with me. As far as the ferrules go, they're supposed to be black, and the neck is going to be my white ibanez's neck. My photoshop skills kinda suck, and again, there was lack of sleep involved . I should definately do a more accurate representation of the two final products... after these messages from our sponsors.
  5. But I am going to use it... I switch pickups whenever I go between distorted and clean channels. I almost never use both at the same time, as it makes pinch harmonics difficult to hear. And there will be pinstripes... Oh yes, There will be pinstripes...
  6. I'd use a gold one, but I currently have no gold material to make one with. You're all right about the pickguard not lining up in the program. Perhaps if it lined up the votes would be swayed a bit. But you've all convinced me with your landslide votes I just gotta be careful when I route for the switch... Unless I use a 3 way toggle... HMMMMM Thanks everyone!
  7. I used the flash program offered by the Jackson/Charvel forum http://www.jcfonline.com/resources/csgen/R...sCustomShop.htm
  8. I find both of these equally attractive, but I know there's different routing options for both, and I'm having trouble deciding which one I should do. So I'm basically asking for everyone's opinion: I'm thinking that everyone else's preferences will tip me off the fence and help me decide. What do you all think?
  9. I noticed that too. I was too lazy to ask though lol. I was going to say it had something to do with string thickness and the extreme angle it would be wrapped around at, but at the same time the string is at that same angle or more at the tuner. *sniff sniff* I smell it too Drak
  10. Hey John! Congrats on your first refret! looks pretty freakin sweet!
  11. That DEFINATELY looks better with black pickup rings. If you don't have an air gun, dont' forget about rattle cans. They may be cheep, but they do the job, and when done properly, the result can look pretty sweet!
  12. I'm trying out for a band right now actually! I'll be a bassist and backup/lead vocals. Its interesting, because I can sing, but I've never really thought about weather or not I should do it in a band. On my first live show, the drummer/clean vocalist decided to mosh and broke his nose. We ended up playing the show with a different drummer who didn't know any of our songs. It was embarrasing as all hell, but A lot of people liked our music! The drummer also went from grunge to metal because of us The band I'm trying out for is more indie rock than anything else... That's not my taste personally, but he said there's a chance of metal being quite an influence in the band. So from a scale between country and death metal (two extremes), this will end up somewhere in the middle as a sort of classic rock sound. I quit my last two bands because I decided to figure out what the lyrics were. Turns out it was all about old girlfriends, and a bunch of other weird emo stuff that I didn't want to represent. I like music that tells a story. I dislike music that complains. Bruce Dickinson is my hero ^.^
  13. After reading the materials, you guys are correct in the fact this joint will eventually fail... I SOOOOO want to keep on going though lol. The decision on weather to keep on going, or to listen to logic, reason, and you guys is obvious... I'm going to keep going for now, and if the joint fails by the time I start routing, then I'll cut it off and redo it with a like grained piece.
  14. Listen to Pinball Wizard by The Who, and you will get a pretty good example of effective soft playing on a bass.
  15. When you pivot your thumb off of the neck pickup (most common practice), you have a tendancy to do the geezer buttler floppy finger slap. The slack from the slap would go between the pickups, and your fingers would also land on the space between the pickups. My bass has a nice wear spot in that area. With the ramp in place, You'll hit it with your fingers harder, and it'll remind you to play softer so you don't hit it as hard. Its more of a mental/physical thing. Imagine being able to lower your action almost down to the height of the body. I'm kinda sad that the middle of the burrl is gone That was my favorite part.
  16. All of those are good suggestions! However, I don't have a biscut joiner (Nor do I understand the concept of one) and I have no room for a table saw... I really wish I had one though lol. I did a pretty straight cut using my jigsaw though, which made me pretty happy. While at work, I found a circular saw edge guide, which could help me with the whole table saw concept. As of now, the guitar is in the sanding process. I'll update this thread once I start into the routing phase!
  17. I make mistakes too. Then I enter them into the Corvus build-off.
  18. A Clown???? HUH I dont see it, hows about a pig, LOL I may have failed a Rorschach test so........... Look below the pig nose. There's the smile! Its a friendly clown! Plus if you use your imagination, its giving jazz hands Its hat is above the eyes, and it goes off in two directions.
  19. That's a good point... Now that its been explained, I understand that its not just for cosmetics. Well, as long as it stays in the house I should be fine then. The house climate stays pretty consistent.
  20. As explained in the 2nd post: Thank you for your concern though! In an effort to save money, build 2 guitars from one piece of wood, and go green (that's the vermont way!) I've opted for the end grain. The glue line is invisible aside from the change in grain pattern. I'm happy about it and you should be too! At least it doesn't look like "The Ass"
  21. I'm making a Rhoads. For as long as I've been playing guitar, i've wanted a Rhoads! The bottom wing isn't tension bearing, or weight bearing, and its going to be under paint. Here's the glue shot. This thing required planning to glue together lol. I don't have any of the corner jigs or awesome tables that some of you have, so this is what I've come up with. At the bottom you can see my awesome block plane (finally figured out how to use the dang thing) and my scraper! ... While I was at it I decided to design the next gibson. What do you think? I call it "The Ass."
  22. There was another topic for this, but I think this one deserved another one. I'll be turning the original body into a frankencaster when i get the time. This is my RG250DX Its been my main guitar since 2001, and I've loved it to death. The decisions I'm making for the future of this guitar have been pretty hard on me, because I love it so much, but what's gotta be done needs to be done. What's happened is the basswood body has given out and the trem posts are leaning. My decision for this body is to replace it with a nice mahogany body with a shape of my choice. I'll be abandoning the OFR for a Tune-O-Matic Strings Through Body. I've already made a few other bodies for this (including an MDF V of my design, and a Corvus) but I'm ready to make a final home for this RG's neck. This body will be my first attempt at quality work with the knowledge i've gained from all the nice people here! So here's what I've got:
