  1. is the stew mac water based laquer and the lmii KTM-9 the same thing?? does it create a good finish?
  2. hey this is a concept i was thinkin bout last night, a carved top tele, i was thinkin that u can pull of a carved top type thing with most "traditional" body types like the soloist, PRS, lespaul etc, (not really the pointy and kinda bad lookin giutars). back to my point is it do able? and would it be any good? luke
  3. hey that looks pretty good, u could have some interesting conours, the headstock IMO looks like a reversed tele, with a bit of james hetfield's explorer head stock (cant remember the dudes name who made it), i like it
  4. thanks fellas ill ask some other people what they think is the best method, but now im leaning toward the masking of each fret way, sounds like less fuss cleaning up
  5. looks good, well the top half anyway, i like the round smooth curves of the tele, but u cant ruin them with the pointy stuff my opinion anyway
  6. hey man nice lookin guitar. the fret bender was exactly the same concept as mine! i thought that the 1 listed in the tutorials here wasnt goin to work so i thought of 1 excatly the same as that. anyway, keep up the good work fellas
  7. man thats awsome!! love the walnut on the necks, but i must say the big headstock looks goofy and is no good 4 a 12-string ive seen a 12-striong pulled off on a tele headstock looked good, but im doin a 12 at the moment on a headstock similar to the ibanez one , its comming along nicely, ill get pics sometime, oh yeah and here its 32 degrees C which is about 83 F hehe good time here in oz
  8. what about carbon (or steel) rods?? wont the neck feel sloppy (dont quite know the word to describe it)? body design is good though, keep up the good work
  9. this probably sounds like a stupid question, but, how do u finish maple fretboards and what is the procedure in doing so?
  10. did i mention the body is mahogany? maybe i didnt, but its floping heavy, and i shoulda routed some chambers, but hey u live and learn, right?
  11. yeah i know wat u mean, if u cant see it, its not there lol . router bits r very expensive (here anyway) and i only have a fairly basic router, which is VERY powerful and can and will kick if the wood is harder that the bit b4 it, i didnt really think of templates at the time either. i routed the neck pocket though, i just had bits of wood clamped there to stop it from wandering too much but that came out nicely so im happy
  12. only 1 pic of an almost finished body, stained and 2 coats o laquer. (bit of my elbow in the picture too) http://uploads.savefile.com/redir/73889.jpg i wasnt entirely confident with my ability to use a router without wandering to much, so the control plate area and pickup "routs" were done with a drill and chisel, a rather primative method, but stoped me from screwin up the whole thing tho lol
  13. hey, great to see another aussie, goin back to ancient history in this topic, west australian rosewood has very little difference to indian, the reason 4 the red colouring is that it is from the outter parts of the tree, indian is pretty much the same, i have recently made a tele with a body of cooktown ironwood, it is bloody heavy,(i shoulda cut the top off and routed some chambers but hey u live and u learn), and wow i wish i could get my girl power tools, metric all the way fellas ur the odd ones out now i cant believe McGrath didnt get the 10 wickets!! kasper u IDIOT!!
  14. hey that looks pretty good!, the contours around the cut-aways r nice!, the veneer is tops too
  15. hey glen that looks pretty good, and i finally figured out wat a forstner bit is, what we call a hole-saw or auger bit here in oz
  16. my theory on this is the stains may mix, forming a colour much like u left in the toilet lol, but if they dont, then u may pull it off
  17. i did a web search for exotic wood suppliers (sensis.com.au), and found a really good 1, bloody briliant prices (from memory this guy charged me $16 AUD a lin metre of honduran mahogany), but this guy is in australia, and it takes ages to get from the airport to northgate on a kangaroo lol(we have cars here BTW), so try searching the yellow pages website (easier than manually) for an exotic wood supplier/lumber yard
  18. i was thinking bubinga for the middle laminate, cos its reasonably priced last time i checked anyway, the plan i have in my head and an paper somwhere is a thru-neck bass with mahogany or walnut wings and a 5 peice laminate neck. i like the idea of the ebony as the other stripes, although i dont like the cost , forget about carbon rods?? that sounds a bit like trouble. i might think more about it when the money presents itself but thanks fellas
  19. well the title pretty much says it all, what would be the best options for a laminated thru neck? i was thinking a 5 peice laminate, maple/dark wood (of some sort)/maple/dark wood (again)/ maple, what would be that best optoins for the dark wood? thanks luke
  20. didnt think of it that way, maybe the simplest explanation is the best
  21. hey fellas, this is just a question on neck finishing, i've taped the fret board, but there are little gaps nexto the frets, will the laquer get in there, and if so how do i stop it from doing so?? luke Rugby is always beter than NFL
  22. G'day fellas all in all without all the puncing around waiting 4 parts i probably would have spent inexess of 1000 hrs maybe, im not too sure, but i spent alot of time sanding and finishing. nice to hear from another aussie, this place is overrun by yanks (i mean that in the nicest posible way) 380, Hayden u beast
  23. hahaha turdocaster i like that 1 haha that'll keep me happy 4 days
  24. hey fellas pine is not good for much else than construction, regects some waterbased stains and bows like a mother chucker, if u leave it out in the weather it will lose its colour very quickly. it comes up fairly nicely with an estapol or other clear laquer, and as was previously mentioned is very soft, if u got ur heart set on this guitar of pine, i would try and get some australian grown or other area which take the branches off so the wood doesnt have knots, new zealand pine is absolutely full of em. luke 380 hayden u beast ps. for all u people out there spruce is a type of pine, which is considerably lighter and less oily/wet, and origon(spelling?) is a harder more heavy duty pine commonly used in indoor wooden stairs
