Dude, there's nothing wrong with wanting the same or better gear as your friends. Hell, I'm way over 40 and still find myself getting into that with the other guitar player in my band (he has a lot more/better stuff). But the best "revenge" is always to be a better musician. Not just a better guitar player, a better musician. I'm done now.

Yeah, I know the story too. Anyway, did you try John Fisher/Tirone's "How to Build ..." thing? He tells about how he got plans and laid them out and everything. Here. Short of just finding a good used body, that's what I'd do. But, as always, that's just me.

Ok. Strat body dimensions changed over they years. AFAIK, the main differences are in the belly and forearm cuts (forgetting the cavity rout nightmare). Body thickness has more to do with the cheaper imports than anything else. I think. I'm sure you know the story: Long about 1970 or so Clapton walked into a joint in Nashvegas and bought a hundred old Strats for about 12 bucks or something. Some he gave away, some he kept. Some he took apart and rebuilt with much more better parts from others. Seriously, do "Ebay> All Categories > Musical Instruments > Guitar > Parts, Accessories > Bodies > Strat." There's a ton on there. For what you want at the price you want, that's your best bet.

Ok, are you making a "Blackie" or a "BLACKIE." I mean, are you looking for parts to make an "exact" copy of the Clapton original or just something that looks & sounds like it? There's a big difference, and the answer just might depend on how much money you're looking to spend. Maybe that's the place to start before any other questions. But that's just me.

Just wondering ... Is the template routed for an Ibanez trem? Are you using a 'real' Floyd? Are the dimensions identical between the two? I'm pretty sure that the different variations of the Floyd-style trems are just that. Different. Of course, as always, I could be wrong. How about some help from the experienced guys? -

Painting A Neck-- Where Do I Tape Off?

I was waiting to see what the real builders had to say, but here goes. IMO, you're on the right track. Mask off the sides of the fretboard for the color, then just the top for the clear. To my thinking, the clear seals off your paint line and lets you have a smooth transition between the painted and "bare" wood. I did one that way and it worked out pretty well. As a learning experience, if nothing else. -
My teacher used this 35 years ago. I've used it myself with a student or two over the years.

I've never seen anything published about dimensions for those, but if you don't have your original you could always buy another and measure it.

Powdercoating is good and tough (hotrodders and custom bike builders use it a lot) or you could try epoxy paint, like for appliances.

Sounds like you have your springs between the pickup base and the cover. Put the pickup in the cover, position it in the pickguard, then slip the spring in between the cover and the guard (wide end up) as you put the screw through the hole in the guard. Hope that helps.

That's the great thing about this forum. Everyone here has an opinion about how to get the perfect sound. No one is right, and no one is wrong. Just do what you need to do to get your perfect sound, and do it with whatever it takes to get there. As far as a sound clip of that particular pickup, I guess just find a song by someone in that vast stable of artists who gets the sound you like and find out how they do it. I think you'll find that it's not just the pickups, but the wood and the amp and the effects and the EQ and, most importantly, their fingers. That's my 2 cents, anyway.
