  1. Hey John! Fellow newbie here. The best way in my opinion is to measure the distance from the outside of the router bit to the end of the base and than clamp a piece of wood that distance from the line you have marked for your neck pocket. Then you have a little guide set up so your line will be straight. Hopefully that made sense. You could also make a template out of any hard material and use a template bit (http://www.mlcswoodworking.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/smarthtml/pages/bt_flush.html) to guide you. Hope everything pans out for you. Sounds like you have a good start to your project. -Marshall
  2. Pretty interesting idea. Hope everything pans out for you.
  3. Pretty nice. Where did you get such a massive spring for the bridge? -Marshall
  4. Definitely the Walnut with the black pickguard. The contrast with the maple fingerboard is incredible and I think it will sound a tad better than Alder. Just my opinion though. -Marshall
  5. Think about wall mounted hinging benches. Kind of drawbridge style. Makes a great solid work area and just hinges up back up into the wall. As for power tools, can't really help you besides the caster idea and just roll them away.
  6. Sorry this will be my last off topic post. He is Army. He's training to be an weapons/ammunition tech I believe. Not positive though. Either way I don't think I'll be able to build in that time span. Thanks for the details though.
  7. Not very "cool" but I think it's nice. 2 piece Padauk body I glued up (Not with just one clamp ). -Marshall
  8. Cut out the body and routed neck pocket and pickup cavities. Lots of mistakes but nothing sanding and filler won't fix. The wood looks great together. I decided on a Bloodwood fretboard instead. Still looking for that truss rod diagram though. Does anyone have it? Thanks -Marshall
  9. Pardon my ignorance but why only 2-3 months? He has 8 weeks of boot camp and tech training left but won't he be deployed to base directly after that?
  10. What about shipping to America? Would it be outrageous price wise? Thanks -Marshall Never mind I just checked myself. If you want to go through the hassle of international shipping I'll buy one.
  11. Alright so I cut the neck out today. The scarf joint looks great and is hardly noticeable. Ordering a birdseye maple fingerboard from Erik soon and gluing that on. Can anyone hook my up with a truss rod routing diagram just so I know exactly what I'm doing? Thanks -Marshall
  12. That is absolutely gorgeous. I would kill for that finish.
  13. Looks pretty cool man! I also want to say thank you for serving your country. My brother just joined the Army and I really would like to build a guitar for him when he returns. -Marshall
  14. Thanks guys but I ended up buying a used DeWalt 616 from Craigslist. It's great, I love it.
  15. Boundsteelblues just quoted you without quote-marks. This build looks nice. I Like RG-style bodies. Oh, and nice colored woods there. -Juze aka Ghroath Oh, hahahahahaha. Thanks, I'm liking to wood selection also. -Marshall
  16. Wow your selection of wood is incredible! Will be watching this, looks great.
  17. Thanks fellas', it's nice to know someone actually notices my attempt at proper grammar/spelling. As for pictures, I have a thread posted in the "Progress" section. Everything I've done so far is in there! Thanks again. -Marshall
  18. The 2 clamps worked fine. Everything is still glued and no signs of budging. The wood is very wide and very thick so any surface I clamped will be cut off or planed so there was no need for cauls. What new tools did you get?
  19. Well you're a guitar player aren't you? That's artistic right? Really like that design. Although I can't contribute anything to your situation I wish you the best at finding someone who can!
  20. Alright a little change of plans. It looks like I'm making a neck for it. Went to the lumber yard and got a piece of mahogany big enough for 1 bolt on and 1 neck through. Cut and glued the scarf today. Hopefully the 2 clamps will be good enough. I also got new tools!! http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb239/M...l_092/009-1.jpg http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb239/M...all_092/015.jpg Both work great.
  21. Well I joined here recently extremely eager to post my build, and never really got to know anybody. First off, my name is Marshall and I'm 14. I live in North-Eastern America and quite enjoy living here. I got into building guitars about a year ago I'd say. I started off good, found some plans, be-friend a carpenter and he let me use his shop. My first, lets say "project" was a wolfgang style guitar. All in all it ended miserably. The carpenter moved, I used plywood which chipped like a bitch. Never even got to the neck. At the end of that failure I was a little discouraged and put building guitars off to the side. Recently I took it back up with full force. With some money in my pocket I bought a couple of things and started my first "build". I'm doing good so far and hope I won't run into any major issues. I suppose everyone reads these a lot but I had the time to post this so.. here it is! I hope everyone is doing well and has a good 2009! -Marshall (P.S. If anyone wants an RG body that has plenty of holes in it, contact me. I used it to make a template and she's all yours if you want to pay shipping!)
  22. Hey Mitch! I wanted to say I'm 14 also. And your guitar looks pretty awesome for a first build. You should see mine.. it's, uh.. less than perfect. -Marshall
