  1. +1 also read the tutorials on this site. maybe pick-up a cheap squier (or similar) and practice on that depends on what you really want to do really

  3. my first mistake was trying to fret a lined fretless bass neck. Did a terrible job so I removed the frets and tried to "electric" plane the fingerboard off. Went too deep, too fast and completely hashed it up. I still have the neck but I only use for chasing mice out of my shed!
  4. Epiphone Valve Junior seems OK for the money. It's a bit noisy but it's 5W all tube. I picked mine up for £85 here in the UK.
  5. I've heard of some people using Cumin on pickguards/ pickups. Your guitar would smell like a surry house though

  9. What about producing body blanks with neck pocket/ tremolo pre routed leaving your customer to shape the rest as they like? You would certainly avoid any copyright issues!

  13. what do you think is a better way of filling the holes left by the big screws on a bolt-on. 1: Drill and dowel them and finish flat 2: Fill with epoxy and finish flat 3: or is there a better way? I'm using an old neck on a prototype that I'm building but I want the neck to be really secure and I want to redrill these holes....possibly in a different position. Many thanks in advance, Steve
  14. Gordon Smith Guitars (uk) ahve come up a way to do a true one piece neck for a f***er type guitar (no "skunk strip"). Unfortuately he won't reveal how he does it.
  15. Thanks everybody. I'm switching to decaff as we speak I'm gonna try the booster idea and see how it goes. Upon further reflection I don't want to be one of those people who tinkered with a future "classic" (imagine being one of those people who had an early strat refinished....I would never forgive myslef). If it doesn't work out the way I want I'll sell it and put the money towards a ax84.com project or similar and have some "painful fun" tinkering with a designed kit. I'll probably learn loads from it aswell

  17. Hi and thanks Pete, My mind started wondering. I had an idea years to "take an pickup which had it's own circuit into a buzzer which would vibrate at the same pitch as note being played and mounted onto the guitar body to try and resonant at the same frequency" I never worked it any further as I thought it wouldn't work on multiple notes unless I had multiple pickups with their own buzzers.......and I quickly knocked that idea on it's head. One day a good idea may come out of my crazy thoughts
  18. I've got an old tube amp "Selmer Treble & Bass 50w reverb" which I would like to tinker with. It hasn't got a input gain control so I can only get power amp distortion from the output valves at full whack If I were to change the the 68K to variable pot of a same / lesser value would I have control of the gain or would i be killing me and / or the amp here's a link to a copy of the circuit diagram http://www.drtube.com/schematics/selmer/t-and-b50rvbsv.gif Thanks in advance
  19. Wow Pete...many thanks for a clear and detailed explaination. This would be "crazy" on a bass!!!!!...which brings me to another question. I've no intention of doing it but I would thought I would throw it into the "melting pot" If you used a pickup cover like the old jazz basses, would that make the sustainer more effective by ensuring the field is more contained.....apologies if this doesn't make much sense
  20. Hi, Firstly can I say WOW at the previous 77 pages! I'm interested in taking part in the sustainer project but I have a very simple question. Why does the sustainer "pickup" have to be a the neck position? I'm planning on a using the sustainer in the middle position on a H-S-S configuration. I love the sound of my neck pickup and I only use either the neck or bridge pickups so I probably wouldn't bother if I couldn't use the sustainer in the middle position. Many thanks inadvance and many thanks for the previous pages....I feel that I'm much more informed due to all your comments
  21. I've got a strat copy with a swamp ash body, kinman pickups and put an 'encore' logo on it. I love getting whispers/ sniggers from other bands when they think I'm playing a sub £100 guitar. I love the look on their faces even more when they realise it sounds better than their fenders/squires
  22. If your doing it on the cheap, a home-made scratch plate would cover it
  23. are you using a pre-made pickguard? That would solve the issue for the neck p/up placement
