  1. Howdy to both of y'all! There is a huge wealth of knowlege around here, but sometimes searching is your best answer.... As for the Jersey Star, I googled a cou[le of images , cross referenced it against a Fender Strat , and ... well... you be the judge: Looks to me like you could use a standard strat body , route it for 3 hummers and put the switch in sideways. Maybe look for some star inlays at the fret page and grab a kramer banana HS guitar neck off the 'bay. Shouldn't be difficult. If you want a closer copy, hit the music stores with a tape measure and pencil or just buy one then clone it yourself. So many options really...... For tips , mine would be : be patient. and be resourceful.
  2. Ashtray Dip holder... put in more than one like me and its a chip AND dip holder !
  3. I like the display in the body. serves several functions, which is great. Very cool guitar !
  4. so.... a swirl huh? I dig those. Always wanted to do one, but haven't attempted it yet.
  5. Dude I have an industrial strengh dust extractor in the roof of my shed!!! Health and Safety and all that Thanks for the feedback yes the tips are quite vunerable but very very strong!!! I wanted it to be thinner than the original version and I hope with a bit of care it will work out!! Awesome.. but aint your nose between the roof and the router....
  6. Sorry I didn't see this till now.... I do have some thoughts. You really do need to do the 'measure twice' thing. kidding - but on the FB thickness- I've used a thicker fretboard before to strengthen a weak-ish neck ( weak in my mind , I had no scientific proof ) . I don't think yours needed any reinforcing, so you could thin it out some. The headstock looks really nice so far. the fretboard too , nice board ! looks like it'll be a nice guitar once done.
  7. Lookin good so far. Careful with those tips, they look a bit sensitive to compression, if you know what I mean. BTW - the hat don't phase me, but for the love of breathing , wear a dust mask when you use dust-makers. sawdust is b.a.d.
  8. If you're gonna use a mounting ring , go for broke - The Seymour Duncan triple shot....... These rings = awesomeness. I have used them a couple of times and they are great. You can get series, parallel and split either coil , all without making new holes or installing a push/pull pot.
  9. I looked it over - it seems like its meant to go into a tremolo route? Got the plate for attaching it to the back of the body ( I'm guessing. ) ... that is quite a big chunk of metal there....... I don't think you'd have to remove any more material then you would for a tremolo unit, and those bodies have good sustain. Heck , a Strat has a bolt-on neck AND a tremolo cavity and they ring like a bell. Well... the good ones do. I think it's the whole "mass" of the thing that'd make it sound good. I know I've added small-ish weights to the back of my headstocks before to add sustain . They seem to have done it individually to each string.......... a tight mount of that unit would probably yeild great tonal improvements..... < [/voodoo] I might just have to try one on for size...
  10. I think the point Drak is trying to make(which seems to fly right over your heads so far ) is that spending $700 on a guitar body and putting a $30 neck on it is just "unbelievable".And he has a point. That he does, but I've just recently sold a Mighty Mite strat neck on the 'bay for 31 bucks, so a $30 neck just might BE a good neck. < That one was. More unbelievable to me is spending the other $600 plus on a "custom" body that wasn't built to fit theneck or accomodate a hardtail bridge.........
  11. I use industrial pipe insulation ( foam rubber ) to keep some spring/height adjustability. Looks direct mounted, but has some padding underneath which dampens the vibrations from body shock. My $.02
  12. O - and the vinyl isn't allowing the air to dry your spray-glue , so it's being preserved underneath. Try a hairdryer to warm it up a bit , but be wary , it could make the vinyl stretchy too......... If you sealed the body first, it'll likely never dry..... well, one day, but who knows how long thatll be?
  13. Drak - the $$ the neck cost shouldn't be considered. At all... If the heel on the neck is THAT thick , it could easily be thinned out.... but if you look at the photobucket pics, the neck pocket does look pretty shallow. ( my guess is 1/2" ) Tom - any chance of getting some dimensions on that pocket? There are several ways to skin this cat.... and we all have knives.
  14. Nothing personal , but even when I was just a teenager who used to throw guitars together from scrap parts - ANYTHING is possible if you give it some thought..... Your issue ( to me ) sounds like a neck pocket issue. Routed a bit deeper, your neck wouldn't sit so proud of the body, your saddles could go down and your pups too. I'd seriously give that pocket my attention. You can shim ( as Tim37 pointed out ) the front of the neck pocket to give the neck better angle or have a local luthier route it "right" for that neck. What you have is a discredit to the body maker simply due to the fact that the neck pocket is so 'off'. - I'm an amatuer and I can get em right - a pro should have no problems...... Its a shame your first experience aint a great one, but keep at it. You'll find that elusive 'perfect' guitar.
  15. Tom, don't overcomplicate the issue any worse than it has to be , lol. I've done an Explorer with a 25.5" scale length. I used a Kahler bridge , which allows string height AND spacing adjustments. Radius can be dialed in via the string height adjusters , spacing as well so concerns about width and height go right out the window with a Kahler. They are really easy to route for too. ( compared to a recessed Floyd ) "Fender" and "Gibson" specs go right out the window once you start blending them together. A custom is just that - custom. Get your bridge/neck/nut together first and plan your guitar around them. A 25.5" Explorer is possible and easier to do than you think. ( mine has 3 SC's and a maple fretboard just to be more Fender-ish ) If you DO go for a certain radius bridge , just make sure it matches your neck or playability will be an issue........
  16. It looks o.k. , but seems to have some design flaws..... I'm referring to this part : We were somewhat limited in our final adjustments, due to bridge height in relation to bridge pickup mounting height. Saddle Height is near maximum. This was necessary to achieve playability of the guitar after all truss rod adjustments were in tolerance. Neck construction, relief, and angle, in relation to the bridge, are areas that we would recommend improving. It is our opinion that a different type of bridge and/or neck would allow better and more stable adjustments to be made with respect to the guitar body. That just seems like a lot of $$ for a guitar that 'needs' bridge/saddle/pup/neck adjusting......... Got any clips of its tone ?
  17. I always use a saw to get the body shape and then sand it to final dimensions...... I used a router ONCE to get a body shape cut out....... never again , lol. I found that slow RPM's on the router bit will cause tear-out quick! Fast RPM's and gentle pressure is the 'safest' way to route but it's like anything else , Snafu's will happen..... Be careful out there.......
  18. Well , I don't hate you. I know for a fact that wood varies in tone from piece to piece . I'm not shooting for a 'specific' tone with the bloodwood. With some good pups and electronics, coupled with a good bass amp... that will give me a good tone even if I build it out of plywood. I was just asking about bloodwood because I've never used it. I was more interested in its stiffness quality , and was just as happy to use purpleheart. I think the BW will look sweet tho.
  19. Awesome. Thanks for the replies thus far ! I'm liking the thought of a bloodwood neck..... It's getting a Sapele back, but the top is PH w/ BW neck-thru. I'm going to chamber it a bit for weight reduction and give it a good long upper horn to help balance it. I've actually been given the honor of joining "the Octomen" as their Bassist for a spell, so I'm making one to play shows with. I have a P-bass for now, and its good enough, but I want to try and build another bass anyway. I've only done one and a half........ the half...... My brother still hasn't ponied up any dough for his bass so it sits on the shelf until he springs some $$ or I just feel that generous. I scored a 6 string bass bridge on th' bay, just need pups and my 2 truss rods..........
