  1. So we are ataring to decide on woods for acoustic back and sides in luthiery school and i have been thinking about using paduak but i have no idea about its tonal qualitys or how easy it is to bend and work with i have never usd it before so does anyone here have any info they can share on it?
  2. You will definately need thick braces which could make it loose its volume a little. Are you using a spruce top with it? I would also run some small bracing strips up the sides too. You may also need to make them thicker than normal sides and backs but I agree with dpm99, you might want to start with mahogany.
  3. The aluminum neck sounds interesting. I never have heard about it before... I think the testing different fretboard woods on this could be interesting but I can see people getting into arguments over it like posted earlier, however; wouldn't putting some kind of gasket material under the board reduce the vibrations so it would be harder to hear the differences or am I just over thinking things?
  4. If you are looking for a template there used to be a website called monster guitar shop or something along those lines that had a 27" template but it's been almost 4 years since I looked it up so i'm not sure on that site. Otherwise use the fretscale calculator that Tim37 posted. If you are looking for a paper template just search for it on google. There are several sites where you can print them out for hand sawing fret slots.
  5. No Sir, it is not, it is very detailed an informative and I thank you for that. Jose. Nothing beats Muzz's "Pointy Stick" build last year.
  6. I think I'm going to try this wiring set up in luthier school this year. I'll let you know hoow it turns out.
  7. I like the pink and white one. It looks pretty good to me and I like how it runs in places. It gives it more of a unique look.
  8. Actually I have seen that. I had a guy bring me some necks he wanted me to make copies of for him and one of the bass necks was done like that. It was flattened out on the back and then just a round over bit was used to give it the profile. It was really comfortable and played better than anything else that I have ever played.
  9. It was a toss up for me between SwedishLuthier's 8 string bass, RAD's build, and DC Ross's build. I went with DC Ross because it is different from what you usually see and I thought it was pretty slick looking as is I usually vote for RAD mainly because I love the shape of his builds but his last entry was the same model but different woods and that just reminds me of a produciton company submiting non custom builds so that's why he didn't get my vote. SwedishLuthier: Your bass reminds me of your Northstar Speedster, which I loved by the way, but I think it looks better as a regular guitar instead of a bass and I am not a huge fan of doubled up strings on a bass but that's just me. DC Ross: You got my vote. I love the way this guitar turned out. My only complaints are the heel and I thought the bass end horn should be maybe a half inch shorter and slightly slimmer but other than that I loved everything about it.
  10. It's good to see this thing moving again, I was wondering if you were going to ever finish it here. Looking good. I like the burst idea
  11. What if I just used Birch lumber though and glued it into panels that I could make a cab out of.
  12. Ok so does the wood even affect the sound of the cab? I have read about people saying cabs from different years sound different and I wasn't sure if it was just how they were made or what.
  13. What do you mean by voidless? Do you mean that the wood is smooth or something?
  14. First off if this is in the wrong area I apologize, I wasn't sure where to put it. Anyways, so I built a 4x12 cab a while back out of a mahogany plywood sheet I had lying around and I don't really care for the sound of it. Prostheta suggested I should use baltic birch and I have heard of using that for wood before from companies like Mesa Boogie and Marshall but I can't afford it. My question is whether paper or yellow birch would be just as good or close to baltic birch. I have a ton of it sawn up but it's not being used and I don't want to waste it.
  15. Here, since you said you didn't know how to post pictures.
  16. The first build is always an intimidating one. I remember mine as I'm sure we all do but it's just like everything else where you have to learn it to get better at it and judging by the pictures of the 7 string you showed me you have learned a lot. I'm glad that fretboard worked out, let me know if you need anymore I would have to know before August though since I will be out a shop then for the next 9 months.
  17. I agree with Scott, back it with a little veneer and fill it. Or like you said, you could put an f-hole on the Bass side to take out a lot of the knot and on the Treble side you could try and cover with the controls and drill around it if that makes sense. The problem with that though would be if you are going to chanber it I think that spot would be a weak point.
  18. My issue with this month is the fact that half of the entries are Les Paul shaped, I don't really care for LP shapes but that is my opinion. My other issue was some of the entries had poor quality pictures. I voted for Metalhead this time. I really enjoy his builds and I love the grain look on strats but that is just me.
  19. How did you route for the inlay? just a dremel and an exacto blade for the sharp corners? And did you use black expoxy or what for the glue? That is definately one clean inlay.
  20. Good to see this guitar going again. I hope to see it done soon. What are you doing for a finish? just clear lacquer or are you staining it?
  21. I have the fretboard cut. I have been to busy with acoustic orders lately to work on this. As for the trip plans we don't know what is happening yet.
  22. Well what do you have to fix on your Jackson's truss rod? You might not have to take the fret board off, also what kind of inlays do you have on both guitars?
  23. Looks like African Mahogany to me. Could be wrong though.
