  1. I'm not ragging it man. In fact, I love it. For inventive use of materials yours wins hands down. PVC pipe for a whammy bar, 4 frets slapped on with masking tape, news paper "resonator", and flat head screws for the nut. It's thinking outside the box. Waaaaaaay outside.
  2. I laughed until I cried when I saw the "fuglycaster". God, my sides are killing me. And the sound clip "Horible Horsie" Oh, this is killin' me.
  3. The competition is dropping like flies. I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that my CBG is "Invincible".
  4. "I come from Alabama with a cigar box on my knee..." Yeah, it was just the first thing that popped out when I played it. It's so sloppy. It makes me laugh when I hear it back. The old time sound though is undenyable. Recording technique was done "the old way" with a SM57 pointed at the sound hole. It was on a boom stand and about 1 foot away. I think one track was pointed right at the sound hole at 90 degrees, and the other track was with the mic at the butt end of the guitar, still pointing to the sound hole. Nothing too scientific, but I just turned a different way on the stool for that 2nd track. Glad y'all like it.
  5. THIS SPACE RESERVED FOR... oh, just kidding... Well, here is my entry for the CBG build. The supplies I used: 1 Cardboard cigar box 1 poplar maple 1x2 from Home Depot frets and tuners courtesy of cheap eBay auctions left over 1/4 round for bracing. Scale = 25 1/8" (my favorite) Notice the cut out in the top ... Thanks to Hitone for that tip. Neck is carved from that one stick of poplar with a Strat inspired carve on the headstock. Notice the brass "nut" for tone. And, here's the sound clip. Doubled just because I wanted to. White Owl CBG
  6. That would be the Bocaster...maybe that could be next month's contest No way. I want to see an all 2x4 guitar contest!
  7. Hasn't that, uh, been done already? You'd figure with all the wine that gets drunk around here, I should be able to come up with something...one of those standup bass thingamajigs for example.... A telecaster from a wine crate? Really? In either case, I thought it would be cool to build and then display at the wine store in town. There's a lot of artsy-fartsy people that shop there and they would probably want one made like it with their favorite brand of wine. It's creative advertising and a complete exploitation of the people that have money to spend on wine and art.
  8. I agree that if this becomes a regular event that frets are not a requirement. I also see no problem with a 2x4 with bailing wire for strings if it can be played. Cigar Box Guitars, Diddly Bows, Cigar Box Violins have no rules. Kids and adults alike build them out of whatever they can find. So, for now, Godin set the rules. This contest week is his show and he says what goes. If you want a "frets optional" competition, start one. If you want a "build a guitar from a 2x4" contest, start one. Just don't start them all at the same time. I want to participate in everything I can. If 14 of these things are going at once I'd implode from the stress. Hmmm... 2x4 you say... <edit> BTW, I finished up my CBG last night. The weather outside is sucky so I'm just waiting on a little sunlight to take the pictures. It plays better than the other ones I've made, has an experimental headstock and a few other interesting quirks. I'll be recording a quick tune on it tonight to post with the pictures. <edit> I have a wine crate for about 6 bottles that I'm looking at making something out of that. Either a wine box bass, or a Bo Diddly Telecaster.
  9. Monthly could be cool. I like the idea of setting up rules like you did. It has to have strings and frets and be playable. Anything is fair game. This could become the "You built WHAT?!" contest.
  10. Love the look of the package Kevan. Remember us little folk when you make your next million.
  11. Thanks Godin. I'm almost done too. Just a little sanding, the fret job, and the set neck. With any luck, I'll have mine done Monday night. I think I might have 10 bucks in parts in it. Every guitar I make gets cheaper and cheaper. This is going to be fun to see what everyone has scrounged together!
  12. Just one more question Godin. When we are done, where should we post the pictures of the finished CBG? Here? Or, should we make a mock GOTM thread with just CBGs? I'm actually tempted for you to start a mock GOTM thread, not knocking the real thing, I just have that kind of sense of humour. Complete with preamble, four picture limit and such.
  13. Yep, even an old shoebox would do the trick. Go ahead, be creative. Start looking around the house for an old box. Slap on a stick for the neck and string 'er up. I have this funny feeling about next months GOTM. Oh, and do they have to be playable? You never mentioned that.
  14. I would also suggest a closer look at Hitone's CB Uke this month. Notice how the pattern has been cut out to make the sound hole. It's so well done, I missed that at first glance. Nice touch!
  15. I've got two in the works for next week planned already. Count me in. This is going to be a blast. I wonder if a whammy could fit on a cigar box. There's a few on my site... http://home.hiwaay.net/~jehle/photos5.htm http://home.hiwaay.net/~jehle/photos6.htm
  16. Nevermind. I found a source on line.
  17. Call me crazy, but I actually like the sound of the Saga tele pickups. If one of y'all have built the saga kits and chucked the original bridge PU for something better, I'd love to have the original crappy one. PM me if you have one to spare. I can cover the cost of shipping and pay a couple bucks for your trouble.

    Raised Amp

I use an X stand that holds the amp up about 18" off the floor. It's not so much for accoustic reasons, but it's slightly higher than the average cat sphenkter. So, in my case, it's more for a moisture barier.
  19. There's probably a bunch of people that can help you out on DIY Stompboxes. I'm sure there's a gaggle of builders that can make a clone of anything for you. http://diystompboxes.com/
  20. +1 I don't do gold anything.
  21. I've heard that Jimi was a righty that played lefty. Add me to the lefty's that play righty club. Go us!
  22. No suprise there. I think Samick is the same factory that makes other "name brand" guitars. I've played one or two of theirs in the past and have been impressed with the feel and quality of them as well. One of the biggest surprises that I had in a guitar shop was this one by ESP... The Earvana nut was freaky. I've never played a guitar that was that in tune before. FEATURES: set-thru construction; 25.5” scale; mahogany body w/flamed maple top; 3-piece maple neck; rosewood fingerboard; abalone offset block inlays w/model name at 12th fret; Seymour Duncan JB/59 pickups; volume & tone controls w/3-way slotted switch; black hardware; Sperzel locking tuners; Earvana compensated nut; TonePros locking bridge w/string-thru-body; white w/abalone binding on body neck & headstock; 24 XJ frets FINISHES: Amber Sunburst (ASB)
