  1. Any thoughts/recommendations on putting a humbucker in the bridge position of a strat? Looking to fatten up the sound a little. I am not terribly knowledgeable about what to look for as far as output relationships to the other pups. Any advice is appreciated.
  2. Welcome ken, I am pretty new here too. Hoping you might offer some advice about putting a humbucker in the bridge position of a strat. I am currently building a chambered mahogany strat with a maple set neck. I would like this thing to sound a little growlier than a typical strat. I am not very knowledgable about electronics, what to look for regarding output relationships etc. any help would be appreciated.
  3. I applaude your guts sir. Is that you and your dog in the pic?
  4. Really nice build you have going. Great inlay work.
  5. It took a lot to post the damage pics. I am a trim/millwork carpenter and we hide our mistakes like dark family secrets. Plan B is use the test board which is bubinga and came out nice, but a little narrow. So now it will get bound with ipe and dyed black. Hopefully I will get to it this weekend. I have only done one bound fretboard before and I trimmed the tangs on a grinder. It went well and I only had to redo a couple of them. Anyone have a better method besides buying the $80 tang trimmer?
  6. Fret slotting. This is the first attempt at a finished fretboard with the new radius jig. I did some test boards and everything went good. Chips ahoy and some major tearout. Here is why. This bit was brand new. I did two test boards with it and somehow one side of the cutter blew out during the rosewood radius.
  7. Wow, very cool binding idea. Is that a vik idea as well.
  8. Your carving work is phenomenol. Very inspirational to newer crafters.
  9. Yeah, I am excited to get it up and running. I just need to do some research on tips etc. I borrowed an electric pump sprayer last year to spray some cherry kitchen cabinets I built and was surprised how well it went. I was always pretty intimidated to try finishing, plus I have a buddy that was willing to trade labor for finishing.
  10. These are some mahogany cutoffs that I had lying around the shop that I decided to turn into a strat. I jointed, glued them together and chambered them. Glue up. My wood order came in the other day, so now it's two strats. This is a slab of swamp ash about to go through the planer. Some template routing and I have two strat bodies ready to go. The chambered mahogany turned out right about the same weight as the swamp ash. The mahogany on is right at 1-3/4", while the ash body is 1-7/8" strong. I left enough for some subtle carving. That's all for now.
  11. I really like watching your builds come together. I am sure this one will not disappoint.
  12. Looks great. I really like the flamed fretboard.
  13. Any suggestions on tips or anything?
  14. I recently inherited a 5 horse, 22 gal. Compressor and some spray guns from a downsizing operation. I am sure the compressor will handle my needs, not sure about the guns. As for the compressor I was told to set it up with a filter to regulator to a line dryer to another regulator to one last filter then out. Does this sound right? As for the guns, they are a Campbell hausfield general purpose gun. The other is a devilbiss automotive type gun. Will either of these be suitable for spraying laquer? Any help on this would be great.
  15. Really killer work man. Love the headstock carve.
  16. Love the body. That thing is sweet.
  17. The bass above will get 2-3 coats of sanding sealer and then 5 or so coats of nitro. This will be my first attempt at finishing. I have been using a friend of mine who does custom painting and pinstriping for a few years. He has done some really cool stuff for me, but I am finally ready to try my hand at finishing. My spray setup is almost complete, but that one will get rattle canned. That said, I saw a few guitars in a thread that Wes the man did with wipe on poly that I thought looked great. Here is another bass I am working on. Walnut and bubinga through neck. I didn't have any MOP, so I inlayed the fretboard with little walnut football shaped things. Not sure if I like it or not though.
  18. I guess I figured out the bucket, so tonight I will get some more pics up.
  19. So this is my first time attempting a build thread. I am also trying to figure out the photobucket thing, so please bear with me. This is a bass I built called The Choctaw. It is all mahogany, neck through, ipe fretboard with diamond MOP inlay. If I am successful with the pictures, I will post some of another bass and a strat that I am just starting. 20. Thanks again for being so helpful and welcoming. I am not sure what has taken me so Long to become more involved here. I guess I was always a little intimidated. There are some really talented builders who hang out here. I started building about five years ago. I have completed eight builds, with a few more in the works. I am a pretty regular visitor to this site, I should start to interact more because everyone seems friendly. I am 41 years old, live outside Chicago and am a woodworker by trade. I have a small shop, 15x30 where I build. Really into music, but not much of a player. Currently listening to a lot of punk/blues and 70's style blues rock from smaller regional bands. I guess that's about it.
  21. Thanks a million prostheta. I have been wanting to enter for a long time.
  22. Thanks for all your help demonx. It looks like I did something wrong though.

  24. Sorry in advance for this post, but I have never tried to enter into guitar of the month before. I set up a photobucket account thanks to demonx. My question is this. In the post box, I get as far as photobucket links but no actual photos. Is this normal? Do I just type my description above these links and then when it posts the photos will just show up below my description?
