  1. A bit more every day! Just a bit of touchup stuff to do with the paint and baseboards, then I can run my dust collection and start setting up tools
  2. Quick update: We have lights, power, paint, a bunch of tools in boxes... mostly just a big mess, if I'm honest. Things are going well over here, my goal is to start setting up tools on Friday. http://i815.photobucket.com/albums/zz75/adknight88/Workshop/IMG_20160820_133623_zpsoixpmc9o.jpg
  3. That's just delightful. I really love your singlecut design, it's got all the right bits in all the right places.
  4. Very nice! I like the faceplate, I hope it turns out well.
  5. For those interested: I'm a heavy user of laser-cut acrylic templates. I've tried many different companies and material thicknesses over the last few years, so let me throw my official (however little weight they may carry) recommendations out there: For the best balance of usability, durability, and price, go with 3/8" acrylic. I've found 1/4" to be too flexible and prone to melting, even when used briefly as master templates. I love using 1/2", but they're just overly expensive for little real benefit over a similar part in 3/8". I'd say 1/2" is really only worth it if you need something to be extremely sturdy...like the adjustable sides of a Myka jig, maybe. And for places with lasers, my best experiences and results have been from Pololu's custom laser cutting service. Very fast, reasonably priced, and most importantly, totally accurate. Just make sure your drawings have accounted for the laser kerf, which is about 0.005" in Pololu's case. Happy lasering!
  6. @bigdguitars If I was local, I'd be there in a heartbeat. Any chance of shipping one or two boards? I'm happy to pay fair value and shipping, of course. @Prostheta Thanks Carl!
  7. At the very least, my wood storage area will be monitored and controlled for temp and humidity. I'd love to condition the whole shop, but that's just not in the initial budget. Thank you! I'll definitely post more pics as I take 'em
  8. Thanks guys! I've mostly been offline due to several writing-intensive summer classes, so I was just tired of staring at screens for a while. The wood shop on campus is closed all summer as well, so that really took the wind out of my sails for a bit. It feels great to be establishing my own space where I can do guitar work full time, no more compromises. It'll be my space, my tools, my schedule. It's 1250sqft total, about 400 of that is an enclosed office/storage/toilet area which will have air conditioning. No climate control for the main workshop, but I do have a big-ass fan on the way
  9. I have had the very same issue with my Veritas mini router plane, glad to know it's not just me!
  10. I'm not picky, you can just bring out tepid roxxorz if that's how you're feeling. Really though, I've heard the Fishmans a few times and I know they tend to be pretty good.
  11. Hey everyone, I know it's been a while since I've been really active on the forums, but I've got good news! I'm transitioning into a much better work space and massively upgrading my arsenal of tools. Within the next few weeks, I'll be back in the shop and working on some killer new projects!
  12. Man, this is looking great! I can't wait to hear it.
  13. Thanks guys I like the gauged nut files a lot, having a specific tool for each string really appeals to my inner OCD nerd. If you get these, I'd recommend supplementing them with a feather-edge file to start the slots.
  14. In this case, the tree just gives enough downward pressure to keep the low strings from jumping out of the nut. I had to use it because of the non-angled headstock on this guitar.
  15. Wow, that is just stunning. Amazing job, Scott!
  16. I've finally managed to grab a few hours of shop time! I didn't end up taking too many pictures, but I am extremely happy with how everything turned out today. In particular, my new neck pocket system worked beautifully- it's simply my cleanest result yet.
  17. Ah, I love that new project smell. Templates arrived today and I selected a nice chunk of mahogany for the white 7. It's Shark Week and this one feels appropriately dangerous, so for now it's 'Great White' in my mind
  18. Haha yep, I know what you're saying. I don't really respond to those ridiculous CNC threads anymore, it's not worth my time to type a response that someone won't consider or care about due to the fact that it's not their side of an argument. I only share on FB so I can show my non-forum friends and family what I'm up to. I like sharing here because I get honest and genuinely useful feedback from you and many other builders I have respect for.
  19. Yeah, I totally see what you mean. It's my sort of virtual proof of concept, as you said above. I haven't had anybody bitch about my renders from a technology standpoint, but I'm sure it'll happen if I ever step into the CNC world.
  20. Thanks Carl! I'm mainly using modeling as a way to preview designs in a somewhat realistic fashion. I don't have access to a CNC and probably won't for a good while, so generating toolpaths and such isn't really a big concern at the moment. Although if I did use these as a base for a CNC'd body, I certainly wouldn't be upset if I got a body I was 99% happy with! You're completely right, I'd do a better job of blending the heel in real life, though I don't think this would feel terrible if done as-is. In reality, I'd smooth the heel out in a similar fashion to the padauk guitar from earlier this year. I just need more practice in Fusion's freeform sculpting environment...I've only been at this stuff for a few weeks.
  21. Hey PG friends! I've been having a lot of fun with 3D modeling, so I'm opening this thread as a place to share renders as they're done. I welcome any feedback/critique/whatever, as I'm always willing to learn and refine my skills. And of course, I'd love to see some 3D work from you guys as well! I'll kick us off with this: Thanks for taking a look!
  22. I had the opportunity to mess around with the Triton spindle sander at one of my local tool shops. It feels nice and seems to be built well, but I'd have to have more time before saying it's good or not.
