well... and the pickup cavity just below that... extends further to the west than the neck cavity?? so it def isn't that since I ran that minutes before this! and cut the body shape! and I ran the pickup after as well to ensure something wasn't all of the sudden physically stopping it! plus, I've copied my config file into mach3 new just to rule that out (soft limits and the like are all saved there). z was going above the piece as it seems to cut 'like normal' with the exception of location. the thing with coordinates... if I check them after... my y and z are right on... but my x has moved. if it was changing the x... youd think it would start out east of ctr... but it doesn't. I will try the N115: - you just want me to put it as the first line?

so was reading a similar issue with a guy but on his it was his z axis... "I posted my problem on the Mach3 yahoo group and got a solution from someone named Brian, who I think is associated with ArtSoft and Mach3. He told me to try adding 5us to the pulse width (bottom right corner of the motor tuning dialog box). Looks like that solved my problem" might give this a shot.

no... I don't even finish the first pass. I start it and the second cycle I can see that instead of 'moving further out' to the west... it just keeps hitting the centerline... but does keep moving east with each circle around. If I stop it after 3-5 passes - my x is now out of alignment by .25" or so. very much appreciate the fine detail... I've looked over this code and am not fully versed in gcode yet but I get the gist and your play by play has learned me a few things so thanks for that. the reason it's issuing the arch code is that the post processor I'm using is the 'arc' version from aspire for mach3. just trying to keep it simple by using the sm thing at all times so I used this post processor as it is the recommended one. I'm guessing that is also why it sets up the positioning as such, but I can try a dif post processor to see if it changes anything. my mach3 machine is setup to use inches... tho I'm not sure what units the 1500 is in... I can tell you that reducing from 100 to 80 did make a difference in speed. Further dif at 70 and then 40. none of this changed how the tool ran. #6 - again, I didn't even complete a full pass on my testing... if I run for 3-5 circles around the axis it ends up being out almost immediately. the fact that is does NOT do this when running a horizontal pickup cavity... suggests to me it is loosing the fine detail of the angle. further... when I watch mach3 execute lines... it does seem to 'jump down'. originally I thought this must be that it's executing the lines in between so fast that it just looks like it's jumping... but the more I look the more I think that this is actually the 'skipping steps' that this model is so infamous for. I tried to just guess at how to execute mach3 code line by line via the interface to see if that would fix things... but I guess I need to read up on how to do that as my first guess didn't quite do it. thank you again for the detailed help! very much appreciate it!!

well... right now aspire puts out just 'tool 1' every time... I've split my job into each toolpath and really only run one (or occassionally two) common tools at the sm time... and it is always a 1/4" bit. what I'm getting at is - afa mach3 is concerned it is seeing that sm bit (at least I think so) for each job. it is successful in other cases. share my routine - ok, not sure if I know 100% what you want but... basically take some vectors in aspire.. right now I'm importing bitmaps that came from photoshop, then doing a bitmap trace to get vectors in aspire. then I use the aspire command to smooth this out eliminating points. make a toolpath setting depth and picking a tool, output that to text file with mach3 post processor, transfer via usb strick... everything I do is based around centerline - that's just how I'm comfy... so take a piece of wood, mark out with pencil my ctr... find center with a 60deg engraving bit, then jog the machine to one end of ctr line, then jog to other end to ensure bit is on that line at either end... then lock the piece down with clamps. run my program to do rear bolt holes... put in nylon bolts and slide the workpiece in... lock down, drill front bolt holes... put nylon bolts in front, lock down, then from there I just keep finding center each time I run something. find center and cut shape of gtr, find ctr cut shape of pickup, find center cut knob holes, then find ctr and cut neck pocket. (I am aware I could simply tell mach3 to find home but starting out and making sure as I go since first real proj) all prior steps used the sm 1/4 bit setup in aspire. sm feed and such as that is all setup on the tool profile altho I did change it after.

well..... not the code. ran perfect and as expected. that said... an invaluable resource so thank you for that. the thing that stuck me about my tests this morning... the code runs the exact sm way every time I run it. it's def not a mech issue because you'd think there would be some variation... but each pass it shifts the shape the width of the bit to the right... and after running my x axis is shifted the width of the bit minus stepover times however many passes I've made to the right. anywho... I need to do some work on this control box... but if I'm putting the effort into it... I can't help but think I'd be better off just investing in building a new control box that in theory I could transport to a new machine down the road (something that could handle a neck thru bass w/o tiling). Every story on cnczone that ends with someone getting a gekko g540 seems to have a happy ending... and there are countless stories of folks putting all sorts of effort into trying to diagnose/fix the chinese controller. think on it for a while...

thank you for the reply sir. interesting... seems a common thread among those that know what they are doing that they have ethernet card. if I understand... you are talking about calibrating steps as mikro was mentioning earlier? Setting my steps as it were? I did calib my x and y axis tonight... y was off a bit (.125ish) but fixing it did not correct my issue. tomorrow morning I was thinking I would try running it w/o my spindle plugged in. I am aware that the spindle is typical source for interference with other axis (if there is going to be any... should be there anyway). looking for the wire connectors... I've found the typical aviation connectors the setup is using now... but have not located a connector like what is on my spindle... if anyone has a source that'd be great. it looks like it might just be a bigger version of the aviation connectors that the rest use.

well that's a good idea... testing it under load as opposed to not. that is a solid idea. wish I'd have known that before I bought a dial indicator! don't see how this corresponds to step tho... I was under the impression that step was a pre-determined measurement based on your motors... and that for the 6040 it should be 320. So the mach3 calib where you tell it to move 1" and then measure and enter that value: that changes steps?

thank you very much for the response. well, good advice there - it is exactly what Mikro advised. I went through my machine, and tightened all the leadscrews. x was a hair loose... but it didn't solve the issue. I also tightened the linear bearings (I think that's what they are called) and it make everything a bit tighter and yet still smooth... but didn't solve the issue. yesterday... on a whim I added some ferrite beads to all axis... when I ran immediately after - it actually ran right... but then ran again to see if it was consisten and it ran wrong. this makes me think it's def a noise issue on the cable. was running this in air and getting these issues. my shape does have two square ends that are actually outside the body area... and I could easily change them to rounded corners... but I don't know how that could cause the issue. well, I had a more experienced cnc'er create a toolpath for me in a completely dif software. oddly, it caused the x axis to go off more and in the opposite direction!! funny thing is... I had re-written the toolpath to do a east/west raster... and this stayed pretty much on coarse until it got to the final pass where it does the profile... then blew up. so it doesn't seem like it's even an east/west issue, but more an issue of combined easte/west while running north/south. afa total replacement - you are def right on here. I've since reconsidered this and am going to have a good look at it tonight... and possibly start by replacing the motor wires. I've read quite a bit on the forums re the 6040 and this is the common theme on them. further, at some point - I'd like to replace the controller anyway... as I'm told the improvements in stability and rapid speed are immense... so that was part of the motivation of a knee jerk reaction to replace everything. i figure, if I'm going to get in there and have to jack around improving the grounding... might be just as much effort to build something new. so... with your cnc... 20 questions... did you have usb or parallel? what controller board did you have? did you use mach3 or something else and if so what?

I agree that it is unlikely an issue with mach3... wasn't suggesting that... just thinking about replacing the controller with literally 'anything' else as I'm told this controller is not great and that this issue is likely related to grounding issues that are common on this machine. there are many threads about gutting them and replacing the controller and all wires. I don't want to go to that extreme... and I'd love to rule out everything else first. I bought a dial indicator and an arm for doing just this (calibration)... but got stopped when I realized I didn't have a way to mound it in my collet (it's too big) and then realized - aluminum is not magnetic (hehe) so can't stick to the bed. I need to rig up something to overcome this and will do for sure asap. can you elab a bit on backlash? I think that would just be an issue if I was running in wood right? I'm literally running this above my work piece in air and observing it go off course. I have my work-piece setup exactly parallel with the y axis. I've jogged to one end then the other with a 60deg engrave bit and it is on the line exactly at either end. that said... when I run this program it will pull zero out by .5" in a matter of 30 seconds. No other programs will. Now, I've cut several things and come back to zero and we're spot on... but if I cut this neck pocket for a few seconds... and go back to zero - we are way off. so I come here to chew bubblegum and piss and moan... and I'm all out of bubblegum. so, still issues with my machine cutting a neck pocket. have had some help here from mikro - went through my machine and tightened all couplers/bearings and ruled that out - did make some improvements but were not quite there yet. I've cut out the body shape, the pickup cavity and several other projects - all with no issues... but the neck pocket - if I start cutting it and stop the machine and go back to zero: I'm no longer at zero. had some help from a gent on cnc6040 group on facebook, he generated a tool path for me to rule out my cad/cam... funny but that tool path causes the x to drift in the opposite direction! ie sm problem in reverse. so at this point... I figure I must be losing steps. I'm thinking a whole lot at this point about things from getting a planetcnc card ($70) and replacing just my motion control breakout board and using their version of mach3... to buying the parts for a gekko g540/power supply/vfd/wire and building a whole new controller ($500-$800). needless to say my dreams of cutting a neck pocket are no where in my near future. I don't think I'll even bother trying to run the cnc for the body contour/3d stuff. Mostly I just want to piss and moan. Sort of surprised that what I thought would be "the learning curve" was going to be learning cad/cam/mach3. Not that I'm particularly great at those things but they haven't posed nearly the challenge that "random mechanical problems" have. there... I feel better.

it has been my experience... that when someone overheats and/or uses crap solder to make a pot connection... the best way to go is to get some de-soldering braid with lots of flux on it. In fact... I have taken mg chem de-soldering braid, dipped it in flux... and then let it drool all over the pot. Leaves a mess you need to clean up with alcohol... but is 100/100 in terms of getting nasty grey'd out solder to relinquish its grip on pots. At least that is what works for me. Does generally require a little more heat from the iron (usually 550 for me). Hope that helps!
