  1. Wow, that's very nice work. Congratulations.
  2. I'm not much help on jigsaw blades, but as far as a router, I'd buy the best you can afford. I haven't found a lot of difference between the fixed base and plunge types, but others with more experience may have better opinions. For a router, I have found that ones with half and quarter inch capacity are handy. Some of the big bits with half inch shafts are very useful. Good bits are a very good investment - they stay sharp and last longer. Good luck.
  3. Rich, I've talked to dannog and he and I are planning on coming up on Sunday. Hope we can hook up. Marty
  4. That is really a shame. Your book has contributed so much to me and so many others. I'll keep my eyes open.
  5. Here is one of my very first builds. I didn't know any better and liked the Zebrawood. It wasn't that difficult to work although I did rout through the rear control cavity . With a lot of advice from Drak, I cut a plug for the back and plowed on. It is heavy.
  6. Thanks for the replies. Jester, your work is beautiful, I had a friend who turned bowls and stuff and it looks like fun. A question - is a 3/4 HP lathe big enough to do small to medium 4 - 8" across) sized bowls? I also need a face plate for it - any suggestions? I've seen some on E-Bay but don't know what to look for. It appears to me that the key is to buy and maintain good cutting tools - is that a fair assumption? Sorry for getting so far away from guitar building stuff, but I appreciate any advice. Thanks, Marty
  7. Well, I bought a 3/4 HP 36" base lathe with 10 or 12 chisels. Seems to work fine - just needs some TLC. So what should I do with it? Marty Oh, I blew my tool budget for the year - it was $20.
  8. Rich, I may go up to the show tomorrow - anything else I should look out for? Those clamps look great. Marty
  9. How did you remove the hook arrangement? How is it fixed into the neck block? Did you cut a proper neck joint and bolt on the neck? Keith Keith, I didn't replace the hook arrangement, just the set screw part. I glued in a bushing and used a new set screw. I don't remember how the hook arrangement is fixed in neck block.
  10. I bought a 1972 one for $41 on E-Bay. I replaced the set screw arrangement and it worked pretty well. I also put about 1/4" of shims under the heel of the neck. The action isn't great, but it sounds pretty good.
  11. DRAK uses a router? I thought that you used an old screw driver and a rock I've got a Miluakee that I like a lot and a little Freud that I got really cheap. It's small and easy to handle.
  12. I used a $15 Harbor Freight one with their sanding disks. Worked great.
  13. Agghhhh, should've held onto that pic a little longer! Sounds like I need to make a trip to Oregon to shoo the vultures away... Next time you cross the Oregon line, you better be bearing wood. Looks great. Marty
  14. Check out Dan Erlewine's books. For repair and set-up, they are great. Stew Mac
  15. Rich, The site looks great and works well for me. I did notice that on the body woods, it shows the picture size but no prices. Don't know if that is intentional or not. Nice work. Marty
  16. Mike, that's a great looking guitar and I really appreciate you giving the details of the build. Marty
  17. I just bought 3 rolls of 2 mil X 3" X 30 yards for $7.99. It looks a lot like the stuff on the back of pickguards, anybody use it?
  18. Get a long drill bit - I think mine is 1/4" and 12" long. They sell them at Home Depot type places. Drill from the neck pocket through the pup routs and then from the bridge pup rout into the control cavity.
  19. Love those oxymorons. Your arms have to stretch down to your feet to be able to play it HEY! TAKE THAT BACK! NOW! I may be whitewashed, but I know my roots! EXactly! Anyways.. any guess on how much that thing weighs? 20pounds?? It says it weighs 15.5 lbs. About like a LP huh?
  20. Carl, I've been reading this thread and there is only one answer..........you build your original design, and use all the other ideas for you second, third, forth etc........ I told you so. Let me know if I can help. How are the kids? Marty
  21. Give it up, it can't be done. It's going to be nice. Marty
  22. I'm building a Strat for a friend. We're trying to stay close to the American Standard and he wants black hardware. Does anyone know if Fender makes a black trem 6 screw bridge? I haven't been able to locate one. Any suggestions on other brands? Thanks, Marty
  23. marksound, Im using this stuff Stew Mac Glue I bought it at a glass store that sells plexiglass - $7 for a 5 oz. tube. I'll have to check to see if it will stand up to rum. Marty
  24. Russ, Thanks for the help. What would you use to seal the binding? I'm not going to use CA, I've got the stuff Stew Mac sells. It just seems ti me that it might be easier to get the dye off the binding then get gluue off the dyed mahogony. Oh well, I'll let you know. Marty
