  1. i dont like the carve, other people dont like the carve, but its yours and you do like it! so who cares what we think. we might all be idiots anyway hehe
  2. mask off the bit you're staining and spray or brush some clear coat onto the bit you dont want staining, that way the stain wont creep onto it
  3. im using a blue on my latest thats also got a mahogany back and wenge neck and it works really really well. sorry if iv made your decision a little harder but if you want the burst it'll still be coolies
  4. not much to report really. the body needs another few coats then i can glue the neck in and try get it finished. once i can afford the pickups that is! heres the bdy hanging up and looking much more blue than it actually is, and the mirror shine neck after having some oil thanks to wez and killemalls advice. the white in the grain is just flash
  5. my wenge neck feels really nice all sanded up and i would love to leave it natural, but is this wise? should i oil and wax? just oil? if so which type of oil to use? or can i really leave it as it is
  6. ahhhhh thats better. a tropical lagoon look hehe theres some places in a couple of the pics that looks like bare wood for some reason, but its not. just the light i guess
  7. yeah im gonna do it again tomorrow. i thought it might grow on me, but i dont think it will. try again then!
  8. stained with a sealer coat on. im not sure if i like it or not. obviously with the clear coat on it'll look deeper. i guess i shall just have to see and if i dont like it, out with the sand paper! its a kind of faded abalone colour i guess. theres some streaks of red in there, hard to see on the pics tho
  9. wenge is so yummy i love it! despite the nasty dust hehe
  10. havent really done much this month for ne reason or another. but theres only really sanding to do before staining and finishing
  11. thanks guys! just the cutaways carved today. need some tidying up
  12. try some epoxy mixed with dust from the mahogany. wont be a perfect match bit its only a teeny chip so it will hardly be noticeable
  13. i do wear a mask dont worry im not that stupid. obviously i need a better one! i wasnt planning on any finish for the fingerboard, just sand it nice and shiny and leave it as it is
  14. holy pooper wenge is hard! and it makes my nose bleed. which isnt good. but i shall soldier on. managed to get a fretboard out of it and have finally got the rough neck shape. the headstock still needs shaping but its almost there
  15. it was me! yay iv been referenced! hehe heres my very short thread in the tools bit link it works really well and is very easy too. hell if i can make it, anyone can!
  16. big long hunk of wenge i will be able to get a fingerboard or two from this if i can manage to somehow cut it right. what i wouldnt give for a bandsaw right now!
  17. if you're on about what i think you're on about, those bits will be left natural, kind of carryng on from the natural binding on the treble side
  18. at its thickest point its still the same, but im going to carve the back a bit too so it will come down a little hehe
  19. havent really planned anything yet. i shall see what the colour comes out like and then see what colour hardware will go with it. im going for a fixed bridge again though, and a humbucker sized p90 in neck i think. iv been browsing through gilmerwood the last few days actually, having a peek. i shall have to have a good think. and also wait till i get the neck to see what would go well with it
  20. This will be my first set neck Desiree, and indeed my first proper desiree after the fuss that was kicked up about the last one, which i now diplomatically call my prototype hehe. this will be the first set neck iv done since the first two guitars i made, so about seven years since the last one (im so old!). my last four have all been bolt ons, and all maple necks, so this one will be a nice (i hope) change. i havent got the neck blank yet, but its a one piece wenge blank. dont know what fingerboard im going for yet, so any suggestions are welcome. the body is 32mm thick, two piece south american mahogany. here's the body blank with the chambering done: pic the top is bookmatched 1" thick flamed maple, making the guitar amost 2 1/2" thick. which is quite chunky, as you can see here: pic as im doing a set neck, i thought id do a prs type body angle so the top is parallel with the strings. again, something iv never done before. i made a surfacing router jig, but added some extra bolts so i could put angles onto it too. pic pic 2 there are some nice little bits of spalt (i think - correct me if im wrong) in the maple which i didnt know were there till i cut it (by hand!!???) for bookmatching. some of them are gone after carving but ah well pic after that i started carving. i thought id try doing it all by hand this time, as opposed to an angle grinder like before. this was after the first day. well, a couple of hours, but thats all i did that day: pic i quicly realised id be there till christmas if i was to keep going with my chisels, so i took the bulk of it off with the angle grinder, leaving enough for me to do by hand so i dont feel like iv cheated too much. this is after day two of carving: pic pic 2 day three: pic pic 2 pic 3 and today. obviously my router bit isnt so sharp. hence the annoying burn marks (that refuse to move!!)in the little contol areas: obviously i havent done the cutaways yet. just waiting till iv routed for the neck, so theres no chance of messing it up. for the colour im thinking of a dark abalone type colour. i have it in myhead, just hope i can do it on the wood
