  1. "The Angsty Bat" 9th build. Wanted to make an Explorer style gritty Batman themed 7-string. Set neck, ss frets, single pickup, 27" scale, ash body maple neck, uv resin side dots, uv resin truss and control covers. Emg 85-7. Built in my shop, started building as a hobby to have something to do when the covid lockdown started here. First time I've done a 7-string or set neck.
  2. Tru-oil is great for more natural looking finish. If you want lacquer type gloss, Britetone works great. They deliver worldwide.
  3. Drilled the wire channel and hogged some material from the control cavity, glued the rough cut wings on. Rough cut the neck shape w/ bandsaw too.
  4. Some progress. I think I'll save the ziricote for later builds. Did the truss channel and pickup route.
  5. Thanks for the suggestion, but nah. I'll do it my way.
  6. It does! I want to make something that looks like an ink splotch. Inspired by the ESP RM-DA model.
  7. Build #10 is 35" neckthrough 4-string bass, qs maple neck, ash wings, zebrano fretboard. EMG actives, Schaller hardware. Was going to do ziricote veneer but the one I have is too small for the top. I'll have to see if I can piece it together and hide the seam.
  8. My tip is, don't put off making the neck yourself. It's pretty easy to make a fender-style neck, and the fretboard you can buy premade with slots and radius if you're worried about your accuracy.
  9. Done and done. 27" scale has a nice bell like ring to it. Sound sample coming at some point.
  10. Cleaned up nicely with same process as lacquer.
  11. Correct! Here's a pic where I cleaned some of the goo off to make sanding easier.
  12. Moving on to hardware. Just need to decide which tuners I'll get. Torn between Hipshot and Sperzel. Schallers work great but the black finish on them dents so easily.
  13. Truoil is on. I think 6 coats for the front, 4 for the neck and back. Glossy enough for me. Thinking of making a small batman diorama in the control cavity with see through cover and lights. We'll see if there's enough room.
  14. If there's something I've taken to heart from experience is leaving glue ups positioned so that gravity takes care of any extruding glue. Not fun. If it's something non-critical strength wise, I've used a heatgun to soften the glue again and scraped off.
  15. Went with truoil, Less of a hassle and will keep in line with the gritty look. First coat on.
  16. Yeah it's a mix. First dyed the whole thing purple, then black on top, then sanded back with steel wool.
  17. Lol. I think this will be the final look. Idea was "what kind of guitar would The Joker play if he played in a Batman themed metal band"? Now I need to decide whether to go with truoil or britetone for the finish.
  18. Cool shape! Looking forward to this.
  19. Last time to see the grain, almost sad it will become black soon. Sealer coat of shellac done.
  20. Cavities done. A bit sloppy with the control cavity, but eh, it's my personal guitar and it'll be covered up anyway.
