  1. This Guitar has a walnut back and the neck is from a walnut hand rail I pulled out of a burned down building, The birds eye maple top is veneer. Bill Lawrence pickups I bought back in the 80's. The basic design was my brother's idea back in the 70's when I made my 1st. playable guitar. The curved top and back was a vision I had in a dream. I fanned the frets to make playing a little more comfortable. Well after 43 years I decided I'll make some guitars. This one I made 4 years ago.
  2. Definitely worth the effort. Now I can make a nut in about 1 minuet.
  3. Okay, Here's where #004 is at. Could have done a little more sanding before painting and buffing the lacquer before putting the parts on. Made a design mistake on head reinforcement bump out. I'm pretty sure I can fix. I put the strings on before making sure the pickups were work and one is not. Besides all that, the action feels nice and I know where I need to pay more attention on finishing the other 2.
  4. I started making guitars at 12, I never thought of copying something that has been made copied hundreds of thousands of times. Yes I like the six string basics but the body shape can be most anything which makes it your own. Have fun.
  5. OK, first attempt on using the cutter. Looks good so far. May need a little touch up with some files. I might get a small vice to hold it at an angle while cutting.
  6. Ya I guess it's overkill, but, I couldn't help my self. I have wood for 18 guitars so maybe I'll get some good use out of it. It reminds me of a big gang saw I made and used for 20 years
  7. Making a nut slotting cutting head. This is where I'm at so far. Two of the slitting saws blades are about .010" too thick, so I ordered new ones. I'm making brass nuts since I have the brass kicking around. I'm going to try rounding over the edge of the blades with a fine grinding wheel, hopefully they'll still cut fine.
  8. feeler gauge, no teeth, wow. I just bought 6 Slitting Saws, I'll mount them on an arbor in order to cut all 6 slots at once. Ya I know I'll spend 6 hours mounting the blades and only spend 5 min. cutting 4 nuts. Well it's all in fun.
  9. Well I need to make the nut and I'm using brass. I don't have nut files so I'm trying to come up with the most efficient way of making them. I need four right now. I'm trying to come up with a way to cut all 6 slots at once.
  10. I just drilled the pot holes deeper with a forstner bit and chiseled in between them. Getting close.800
  11. Bummer, The front face is 1/16" too thick for the pots. ARRRRRRRRR! I need to make the cavity deeper. Well, live and learn.
  12. Finally putting the parts on. I haven't checked the fret level yet. I'm calling it the Black Cherry!
  13. OK, I decided to clean up my 1st. guitar that I made at 14. The bridge and pickup were Gibson from the 70s so I figured I sell them since I don't use the guitar. I figured I'd put cheap parts on it. After I took the pick guard off I discovered I made a lot of changes to it back in the early years. I glued a block in for the new bridge and when I went to drill the holes at 3/4" deep I for some reason I thought 1" ARRRRRRRRR
  14. So Cool, You've been busy! Cut cut cut, dust city!
  15. It's on sale today 6/24/23 for $129
  16. When I was 20 I had dreams of building guitars for a living. I was engaged to be married and I spent two weeks pay on wood to make 20 Guitars. My feonsay was very upset thinking it was a wast a money. Well, marriage, a house, and kids and 40 years later the wood is still here. I took me 10 years to get the shop I want. Well I now have the tools. I have Rosewood fingerboards, I hope I don't get arrested! May be now I can make some Guitars.
  17. No but, my clothes and hair were covered. She want me to take my shirt and pants before leaving my shop.
  18. #4 close to putting a finish on it. Lots of dust, wife's not happy!
  19. I've done woodworking since I was 8, and about 15 years ago a friend showed me his set of scrapers. I was familiar with paint scrapers but not with scrapers for shaping and smoothing. Wow they're such a great tool. What do you think about them? I do most of my neck shaping with them.
