  1. Just woundering why you need it to be a UV protective finish. For a natural finish why don't you use tung oil. most of the finishes that i have used with UV protection usally are not very clear. I have built log Homes and used several different types of finish. All of them were translucent, but never totaly clear in apperance. Mike
  2. Stew, Could you post the contact info for " Scary Productions ". Thanks Mike
  3. Is there anyone out there that knows of a company that will make custom water slide decals out of my logo? I have been looking for some time but with no luck. surley there has got to be some company out there doing this type of thing. I bought a DYI kit from the local hobby store and it kind of sucks big time. The kit comes with white paper, and i want to have a clear decal with black logo, and one with white logo. So if anyone has heard or seen or knows any info please help me out. Thanks Mike
  4. Sounds like things are going good and I can't wait to see some updated pictures
  5. I have used just about every make of belt sander out there and the best that I have ever used was a Bosch. the smoothest operating sander ever. I have been a finish carpenter for 25 years and used belt sanders in all types of ways. Log home and furniture, to sharpen draw knives, to sand everything under the sun. And the bosch sanders are just so damn nice. They have a 3" X 21" whitch the motor sits directly over the belt so there is no motor sticking out in the way, and a 4" X 24" and both are just about dust free. Hree is the link if you want to check them out " http://www.maxtool.com/index/bosch/Belt_Sanders.asp " Good luck on your quest.... Mike
  6. Go to Grizzly.com they have some awsome bilts you can split and bookmatch for a realy nice top. They have curly maple and quilted maple in different grades of wood. They also have alot of other guitar parts and supplies to offer. So check it out.... You can request a free color catalog from them as well.. Good luck! Mike
  7. How heavy was your 1st guitar, rsguitar? I was expecting this one to be pretty heavy, even with all the chambering, but its strangely turned out to be very light so far. More surprisingly, its not even neck heavy. I was worried that it may be, since although the body may be chambered, the neck is still a solid piece of oak. Plus it has 24 frets proud of the body. The body design was some where inbetween a bc rich gunslinger and a jackson soloist. But it had a farington shapped hole just below the neck. It only had one pickup and it had a flat mount kahler with a marlbe paint job. So to answer your question about the weight it was actualy fairly light. I would guess yours to be a bit more heavy than mine was. I must say that some oak has a great look to it as does yours..
  8. Have any of you guys ever ordered anything from Grizzly? They have all kinds of guitar parts and what not in there catalog. The president of Grizzly is a guitar building Freak he loves to build guitars with all kinds of interesting inlay work on them. I would love to have access to some ot the machines this guy uses. Big $$$$$$$
  9. Sounds like some bad luck after bad luck, but you might try using some ca glue ie crazy glue type of glue it might just do the trick......GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  10. One of my all time favorite guitar shapes is th BC Rich Mockingbird man i love that shape. I made my son one to learn on. I am making a bass for myself just to play around on since I am not really a bass player although I had to play bass in an old band that I was in but that is a different story.......
  11. Nice guitar My first guitar build was also made out of oak since the lumber yard near me only had oak big enough to make a guitar with..... Looks great!!!!!!!!!!
  12. I agree you can use many different bridges. Khaler has a non trem bridge but with all of the cool adjustment features that you could ever need ie string spacing, hight, and intonation. Also recessing a TOM bridge is a great look and works well. Good luck!!!!!!!!!!
  13. "Because of the oil, padauk dust is serious bad stuff, it will never get out of your lungs. I use a real respirator (not just a dust mask) when working with it. It gets all over your tools & blades & bits, but it works & finishes really well." I agree about the dust it's nasty stuff, and when cutting an exotic wood you haven't cut before a respirator is a good idea. I was using some leopard wood for a carved top on a guitar and the dust from that wood made me ill. My chest felt tight and was hacking for three days. Anayway love the choice of alternative woods and padauk is a very nice looking wood i plan to use some as a thin stripe between some mohogany and curly maple. I think your overall look will be awsome and can't wait to see the finished guitar. with so much oil in padauk it would be a good idea to use some type of coating on your tools like dry-cote or simaliar product.. This will help with friction and burning of the wood. Do you have access to baltic birtch plywood? This is what i use for all of my templates. The stuff is super strong and will take a good fall off the work bench without breaking like plexi would..... Good luck on the build I too share your enthusiasm for building guitars so build on......
  14. I think your idea of doing a neck through is great and I wish you luck on you first build from scratch. It's a little scary but if you take you time and don't rush it you will reap the benifit of your first custom from scratch guitar. Which is something you can be proud of. Doing a neck through is great and i also love the look of the laminated neck. this is where you are in control of the look of your guitar, because there are endless choices of wood you can use. The strength of a laminated neck is much greater than if it was just a solid piece of wood. A much more stable neck it will be. I am curently building two neck through guitars. One has curly maple with purple heart stripes, and the other has and in this order { curly mpl. 3/4", rosewood 1/16", cherry 1/8",rosewood 1/16," curly mpl. 1/2", rosewood 1/16", cherry 1/8",rosewood 1/16,curly mpl.3/4" .} . It took some time to glue up but it was worth all the trouble it looks awsome. And if i knew how to post picks in this thread I could show you. If you send me your e-mail I will send you some pics if you like. I guess the key to any build is planning and preporation really think through all of the step you need to do to get to the goal you have set for yourself. You can do it and everyone here is in your corner so good luck..
