  1. I was going through Myka's website looking for inspiration/tips for my next build, and found this again. so..... Shameless bump for a fantastic thread!
  2. I have to say, Joel, I really like the "faceplate"-style of your body shapes. I think that color would look great on a faceplate on a black or dark blue guitar. As a side note, is the faceplate actually bound with a different material, or is it faux binding?
  3. I like the color of the top, the fact that it's less common than you usually see. Methinks Slash would be proud! ::EDIT:: And that was before I read through your thread. That was some work, man! Very cool of improving on an Ebay purchase!
  4. Wow, I didn't even notice that work until you pointed it out. Seamless! I love the look, that "invisible binding" thing going on. Really really awesome. Congrats again! This is a guitar I really would like to play myself.
  5. +1. On the guitars I've played with it, at least, the 85 is much too bassy in the neck position. I've got the Jimmy Hetfield combo myself, though I'm looking on trading it out (shh, don't tell my pickups. I don't want my guitar to gently weep). Bad puns mean it's time for me to go to bed.
  6. Mmm, I like the shape, and the headstock logo too. Think we could get a better pic of it? And how much Deco are you incorporating into this build? I'm hoping LOTS As for the wire channel routes...... *pats self on back* Quite a nifty idea if I do say so myself That looks to be a 4" or so wide center block? What's the benefit of drilling/routing before putting the wings on? I myself like something to balance the router on, and the wings help. I'm building a thinline hollow as well, so any tips I can score along the way are nice. I'm noting the curious admission of soundholes, however. What color are you thinking? Erm, yeah, I think that's enough questions for me, really. Nice job, Hoogle!
  7. Boink! Bumping an old thread again! I'm finishing the finishing on my guitar this week, so I wanted to get any electronics questions out of the way first. I know I responded up earlier in the thread, but I wanted to re-ask: My pickups (PAF Pros) are neither bridge nor neck-specific, and have two sets of screws. Thusly, how can I tell if I'm installing them "upside-down"? They do have stickers on the baseplates with the model numbers on them. Should I assume that the stickers are meant to be read with the headstock being "up"? The Dimarzio website says it doesn't really matter if they're upside-down or not, but I'd still like to install them right. I'll probably end up just flipping the pickup, because you can't tell that they're upside-down anyways. Scott, if you see this, would only the hot and ground wires need to be switched? ::EDIT:: I just picked up a potentially huge detail on this scheme. The Dimz website links to this diagram for installing their version of the P Megaswitch. Aside from the wiring differences between it and the StewMac version, the diagram also shows both pickups facing in the same direction, with the text on them being read with the bridge being "up." Very interesting.....
  8. Agreed, the headstock is definitely the make-or-break with this build, and I just so happen to like it I say you dun good!
  9. Send the scraps this way! I can rebuild it, I have the technology! I can make it stronger, faster, better than before. *cue cheesy sound effects and slow-mo*
  10. So... 27 votes, and still no plans?!? My guitar is almost done, I need a new project.
  11. Wait... I'm confused. What happened with the planer? Is the whole blue guitar ruined?
  12. Ya still have to put 8 strings on it, and they're going to be both thicker than 50, by my guess....... Time will tell. And it's more important to have a thick neck back than fretboard.... But hey.
  13. Simply maple wood btw Josh, what are the electronics going into the electric? I'm trying to count the knobs and take wild guesses. I see a hole under the bridge for a piezo system.... a few mini-switches, a regular 3-way switch.... This game is fun!
  14. It keeps 'em clean, if anything. Depending on how the pickups on my guitar look (for some reason, the stewmac mounting rings seem to leave a LOT of extra space 'round the outside of the pickups...) I might get a pair of EMG-style covers, to keep a nice clean look and fill in the gap around the bobbins.
  15. Heh, good points. We've had a few hundred years to think up innovations to the 3x3 design, and we're pretty much still right where we started I'm a big fan of the ESP LP-style headstock. It's juuust a tad on the edgy side, but not too out there. And I think the Carvin takes the cake for similarity, Rick.
  16. The side shot of that neck makes it look veeeeeeeeeerry thin *bites fingernails*
  17. Know what? After seeing the 100% completed project, I am liking the way everything flows together. It's not all entirely my style, but it works as a completed piece. Congrats, Pukko!
  18. I'm going with "pretty close" honestly But whatev's. It's your guitar. I might check some acoustic headstocks, you might get a closer match than Gibson.
  19. Just what kinds of tones are we talking about, here? I've never played an exotic wood guitar, and neither of them are carried where I shop for lumber (in anything other than 3/4" thick), but I can dream, can't I?
  20. That's some nicely-colored padouk! And interesting material for the nut, almost looks tortoise-shelled. Is that the same material for the fretboard inlay? And a 7-string at 25" scale... you play a dangerous game
  21. Ayup, I'm a fan of the red, and I'd like it on the headstock front, when you get around to it And I noticed you went with Seymours instead of EMGs... Congrats, Daniel, smooth work as always. How thick is the veneer you put in the scarf joint, btw?
  22. http://public.fotki.com/Xanthus/misc/forestgtstw.html /\That's a picture of the Japan ESP Forest shape. Much more graceful, like Wez is saying, with the sharp edges toned down a bit. And I'd say to stick with 24 frets, because it'll move the lower half up more and balance out the shape more.
  23. Terrifying. But a good terrifying More info/pics if you've got 'em! Congrats!
  24. Nice looking blue! Is it going to be bursted or anything, or is that it? And the headstock?
