  1. Alright peeps? I'm off to get the wood next week but before I do can someone tell me what Lime is like to work with and what it sounds like? Is it heavy? or is it just crap (which explains why I've not heard of anyone using it)? Just found it in the catalogue and I'm curious. I'm after a nice warm sounding wood that will take a dark blue stain well. Any ideas? Also, if I stain a sheet of 2mm vaneer from both sides. Will the colour pass all the way through the wood so that no matter where I cut it or sand to, the wood will always be blue all the way through? Cheers guys, hopefully soon I'll be able to put something back into the forum instead of just asking questions.
  2. Before I hijack alloyguitars thread: I was planing on inlaying on a maple fretboard, it's not the most complicated inlay, but it's no dots either. Would it be possible to use ebony as the inlay materal (I was going to use black plastic) and would this help with the problems of filling the any gaps. Luckily the inlays that I want to make don't really have any straight edges so the odd little ballsup shouldn't be too bad. I heard that if you mix a load of the sawdust in with the glue and apply this to the outside edges of the inlay, it splurges over the top and when sanded acts like a good coverup. Come on guys, kick another one of my plans in the knackers!
  3. What part of the UK are you in? Have a look at Craft Supplies near Buxton, David Dyke and Touchstone Tonewoods. Don't forget the cost of tools (which is crippling me at the moment, especially as my bike service is going to cost 310 quid every 8000km). It's hard to find wood on the British ebay! From my research, take the price that you think your guitar will cost, double it add, a few quid for the buggeration factor and that should be somewhere about right. Good luck mate.
  4. You can put all the dimensions on in CAD. Right click on the function buttons somewhere, select "Dimension" and then.....put dimensions on it. Alternatively, if you can't do it, reply to this with your e-mail address, tell me what dimensions you want and I'll download the drawing and dimension it up for ya. What else am I going to do, work?
  5. Tasty. Have you missed out a marker dot or is it just the picture? I should imagine it's the pic.
  6. whats one of them Sounds like you work harder than I do
  7. Double, most definately double. I'm off home for the weekend now, gonna get drunk, watch the Rugby World Cup and dream of guitars. (I'm from Rugby in England by the way- the place that invented the game-so I'm a bit of a mad fan, especially as we're gonna win the World Cup)
  8. Post me the neck and I'll post you some bigger frets! Sounds like a good deal to me.
  9. I feel for ya mate. Got to back to the consultant in January. They're on about replacing both my knees too and I'm only 24. Used to be very handy at football (soccer to you yanks) and basketball but none of that anymore. I've even got to plan going to shop incase I can't make it back. Still gives me an excuse to sit on my arse and drink beer all day
  10. hAD A QUICK BROWSE (sodding caps lock). Looks good, gonna print it out and take it home for a proper look. Cheers for asking.
  11. Based on Gibson Les Paul Jr, but not an exact copy. Quilted maple, slightly carved top, cheap wood for rest of the body. Laminate neck (Maple?) with 2 stained blue pin stripes running the length (thin laminate stained before glueing). Finger board to match the neck. Not a through neck, but not far off (i'll have to convert the drawings from cad and post them up). The neck travels way into the body, past the bridge. 2 Humbuckers (depending on funds) with push/pull tone pots, volume and a balance. Funky inlays (they're a secret) and gold hardware. Quilted maple top to be like a PRS, you know what I mean. Should look nice, I'll convert the drawings soon and you can all have a look.
  12. Ooooh man I feel for ya. I've had a few operations on my knees and they tend to hurt like hell. Had a Tibial Tubural Transfer last time, thats where they split down the length of your shin, move it across a bit and then bolt it back together. Ouch. Good luck back at work dude. Missed it?
  13. Every day when I'm in this forum I think "mmm... nows here's alot of people that really should be working and not playing on the net", I take it most of you are at work anyway! So I've decided to ask you all who you are, where ya from and what should you be doing? I'm a Mechanical Engineer by trade, but I'm working (if thats the word) as a draftsman. I sit in the corner of the office so no one can see my screen and play on the net for most of the day, before leaving half an hour early every night. I'm aspiring to get the sack.
  14. Sorry to drag up an old topic guys, but there has been progress. Last night I went to see the Earl and Countess of the area. They're opening an art gallery and I was invited, which is odd because I know exactly sod all about art. Anyway, he wants some help to build a hovercraft that he can boot around his more than ample grounds (his drive is about 1.5 miles long). I'm trading knowledge for tools, which is good because I have more knowledge than tools (and he has more tools than knowledge). Been wood hunting already, so I'll keep you informed as to whether I can get this project off the ground. By the way, I also met a cabinet maker at the opening and he bends wood by dehumidifying it while it's being compressed. When it comes out of the press you can wet the wood a little and it's easy to bend. Once dry it's solid. Very, very intelligent man, you should have seen some of the chairs he made.
  15. If you made the headstock into a handle, you could use it to chop down some trees for the next project. I like it, I like it alot and I'd only worry about dropping it incase it chops of your foot on the way down. Good luck dude
  16. No I've been told that it will empty a bank account faster than a woman and I was originally hoping to buy most of the tools I need. Unfortunately my student loan bill came through, my bike needed sorting in the shop last week, all the bills came through at once and I can't sit down because the bank has been shafting me for the last two weeks. I just didn't want to start the project and have it eat all the money that I haven't really got at the minute. However, sacrifices must be made in the name of building a guitar. I'll even go around car boot sales to look for some cheap tools. Buy the way all you English guys, there's a tool auction this month in Coalville Nr Loughborough at a pub. Can't remember the date, but it's soon. Don't worry guys, project ToneMonkey will soon be on the road, after all you don't need to eat every day.
  17. Unfortunately I live out in the country and my only transport is my motorbike (which makes it a bit hard to carry bits of wood around). So it'll be hard to get to any woodworking shops. I think I might be able to beg, borrow and steal some of the tools, but it's the massive amount of little bits and pieces - fret files, oil stone etc etc. I don't want to buy cheap tools as in my experience they normally do more harm than good, especially if I'm going to make a couple. Don't worry guys I'll think of something.
  18. I've been pricing up the new peoject and all is not looking good. Especially as I've just got the bill for my student loan (which puts me a total of 21,000 quid in debt - not good). I can afford the bits and pieces for the guitar itself, but the cost of the tools looks like it's gonna cripple me. I haven't even got a decent work bench. As I know a few of you sell the guitars (or parts of guitars) I was wondering how easy it is to sell them on? I'm not looking for a massive profit, I just want to recoup the cost of my tools (and maybe have enough left for the wood of the next project). I'll be building jigs for pretty much everything I can so I'm hoping to maybe have about 3 guitars on the go at one time. I know that the price I can charge vastly depends on how well I make them, but assuming that I actually make them well, about how much can I get (Gonna be in a LP shape, slightly carved body, quilted maple top) and how easy are they to off load? Cheers guys, any help would be quite appreciated, I don't want to have to call a halt to the project before it's started. I'll necer be able to sleep again.
  19. John - It sounds like that's what you want, so that's what you should go for.
  20. Figured it was probably Illinois, just couldn't remember how to spell it. Ireland is quite a wicked place to go to, went to Dublin for my birthday last year and got quite, quite pissed .
