  1. I love my lathe, and jester you are correct, it is great to lathe while listening to music and being force-fed shavings.
  2. The inner part of the top "horns". If i where you i would kill at least 2.5" of the inner side of the horns.
  3. Screw pinstriping tape! A sign writer could print out 3 sheets, one for the two sides, so that the middle part of the flame can be painted, then apply the middle sticker and work your own way out to stan the sides.. Well thats how i would do it anyway.
  4. Not that your bass isn't great or anything i just think its fairly inappropriate to have two identical topics, one of which being in the incorrect forum. Obviosly it is understandable if it was accidental though.
  5. Thats okay, its just an SG. ;-) SG's are awesome! If it can fit in your fireplace.
  6. I have a quick question, how many clear coats should i do? Is there amount that is concidered the "norm" for painted guitars?
  7. Thanks! I am very happy with it, i have also swirled my single coil with blue, green and red paints which works well with the blues. I can't wait to attack the next guitar, at the moment i am looking at buying an old washburn MG24, which is in amazing condition for its age and will look great with swirl like my 'subtle' swirl. Coincidentally, the MG is also sapphire blue
  8. LP JR (double cutaway) PRS also double cutaway RG/JEM And last and probably least; the telecaster!
  9. Pretty much, just different paints and colours. I'm actually suprised it worked, i hear all of these stories of peoples first attempts failing.
  10. Exactly what i thought when i first saw the missing chunk...so i found the piece of rosewood and attempted to glue it on the missing area, maybe it worked, maybe not. It didn't fit properly but its in the right place. The back of the fretboard has major denting and if i where to salvage the FB i would need to shorten the over hang about 3.5 mm. I will have some images tomorrow.
  11. My ibanez fretboard had a huge chunk removed from the 24 fret/extension area today and is pretty f*cked. What would you reccomend But a new RG neck: expencive as shipping from usa is well...lots, and all necks on ebay are fairly expensive or won't ship to AUS. Or should it take the cheap route and replace the fretboard? (i have no experience with fretboard replacement) cheers.
  12. Hi, i have about 3 or 4 clear coats on now, no problems at all! I will have pictures soon for you all.
  13. Well it's not a jem or anything spectacular, its an cheap Ibanez RG170 (non fr) Well as you can see there is more white than colour, but i like it and i think its not too bad for a first try at swirling, certainly beats the nasty original saphire blue paint job! another pic... and another... again, another... For this swirl, i used a series of blues, thats basically it. The paints used were Humbrol enamel model paints. All of these pics were litererally taken seconds after it was removed from the wheelie bin i used to dip the RG in. So, any critisism? any comments? did i fail?
  14. I don't use any kind of those. Anyway I found a .svg image on en.wikipedia.org under the "Jackson guitars" statement! Hope this information will help other ppl c ya Nice find, i print screened and it's to scale. Been looking for that one for ages, and i really couldn't be stuffed taking parts off my jackson to get an acurate template. Cheers!
  15. A laminate of all 3! Other than that in Aus a good substitute is Jarrah.
  16. I think natural with a touch of amber will look awesome! nice suggestion.
  17. Fret then shape, you could use a sharpening stone, file or sand paper and block to shape a side at a time with a few sweeps.
  18. You are now my idol Godin SD...Amazing guitar.
  19. I have some Elm you see and i was looking at it. It looks nice...is fairly hard and looks fairly suitable for a body blank or a laminated neck or even a top. There is one thing i need to hear before i use it to build future projects (there is about a million guitars i want to build at the moment and the amount of free elm i have would take care of half of them) And that one thing is: Does anyone have experience or is this something i will have to find out for myself? Personally i'd rather hear someone say "it works" than to end up waisting time on a possible failure, you see. Anyway, Got any clues?
  20. Very Nice, and VERY clean work. I hope to see many more guitars from you!
  21. Look for some quilted sapele, i have a few turning blanks and it looks amazing oiled. In my opinion, Sapele looks better and sound very similar if not the same when compared to Khaya. And it's also cheaper Looking good Jester
  22. As far as I know (not much), that's sapele mahogany. I'm gonna check that with my teacher. He should know. The wood looks very much like sapele and not Khaya (Sapele is also labeled as African Mahogany, but not concidered to be a "true" mahogany * i think *) http://www.hobbithouseinc.com/personal/woodpics/ If you look at both African Mahogany and Sapele you will see the difference.
