  1. well pretty much most of all guitars made these days are made from machines and with rosewood fretboards. now we will leave out which is better: rosewood or ebony. but anyways, i read somewhere that ebony tends to break up when you machine it, it is a very brittle wood. this doesn't happen with rosewood.
  2. why don't you wrap the enamel can with masking tape, write what it is in in captals with a magic marker then wrap that up with clear tape. i work for my dad and i have a pest control license. now i don't really know much about pest chemicals, just what to use when there is spiders or ants or when i a have to spray inside or outside. so my dad buys all the chemicals in barrels and he stores them in nameless bottles plus he is too lazy to write down what it is. so usually i just put them in order in the van, but i was in rush one time to get to the next job i just chucked it in the back of the van. so one time i did use an outside chemical for ants inside someones house - i was suppose to use Fendona but instead is used Dursban. when i spray for pest i always where a respirator and safety glasses everytime i use the chemicals so i try not to smell out what it is. anyway, i got an earload from the customer because the chemical i used was so aromatically strong she started gaging. now that i write the labels in large capital letters on all the bottles, i haven't had any disgruntled customers ever since. this doesn't realate much to guitars, just my occupation. but it just shows that planning and concentrating really saves time. in this case i was in a rush and messed up.
  3. or if you read this sometime next year, you can tell me what you did? NYE: i am having a party with my friends and family. screw going to the city to watch the fireworks this year. you know how bad public transport is on that day?
  4. i am constructing a building practice guitar from pine. it has helped me a great deal because i like do things really fast and sometimes i really stuff things up. it has allowed me to concetrate and be more careful towards my project. [so much for woodwork at school ] "what i know is from the school of trial and error." - Brian. i am serious, it is, i did woodwork at school for one year and i can truly say that i have learnt more things by my self then what i ever did at school. as for choosing tonewood, tell us what music you like, what music you like to play and which artist sound you dig. that's the way i chose my tonewoods.
  5. you're a funny bloke Perry! i love your smiley faces btw, they are perfect for the subject matter. at the moment my dream is to build a custom guitar. i have a fear of driving after that accident. but i love Monaro's though!
  6. i was just looking at mine and Wilson's side displays. 300 members in 3 months. Brian, you must be doing something right.
  7. it looks like a pup fender would put on their limited edition guitars. apart from that, i think the Rio and sparkly pups are parmesan cheesier.
  8. so that's what that pup is in your axe. no i haven't actually, infact i have never heard an 85 before, only 81 and S and SA. i shall try it when i become rich. EMG's cost about AU$100 more than Duncan's. i suppose my statement was just a little bias.
  9. so that's what pup it is. no i haven't actually, infact i have never heard an 85 before, only 81 and S. i shall try it when i become rich. EMG's cost about AU$100 more than Duncan's.
  10. whoa dude, how can you afford a Monaro? my parents have a 99' Holden Commodore Berlina. not as good, but i am a Holden lover. the Berlina's are very safe and comfortable family car. infact, the Commodore saved my life, no ****. i was in a car accident a month ago. a car side swiped our car at 100km/h, it hit my mum's driving side and i was in the passenger side. all the witnesses, police, ambulance and fire brigade kept telling my mum and i that we were lucky to be alive and they were saying things like: 'we would definitly be dead if we were in an old car.' car accidents are scary ****, i have dreams about it and i can still see the car coming towards us at slow motion. my injuries were, i got 6 stichs in back of my head, force made me smash head into the window cracking it, i got a cat scan for that. nasty whiplash and now i have to go physcio with my mum, i have a damaged spine and neck. anyways, i am just happy to be alive, thanx to Holden, or my parents for buying one. car is rapaired now, $15 000 damage. you could build about 15 guitars with that. just a thought Perry. you should have short sleeve shirt that are yellow with a black stripe for summer. i would get a long one too for winter, then i could advertise your guitar company all year round. and don't forget to put your website on the shirt.
  11. wow dudes, they are all so beautiful. the hardest thing is, which one am i going to vote for? it's like voting for miss universe.
  12. i agree with everyone here, it's all about availability. a one piece guitar body blank is about 16" wide. now to harvest a tree to get a piece that big, it has to be about 32" in diameter. now this makes me ask a question because what i said could be wrong, is the centre of one piece guitar body blanks the heartwood of the tree? well from what i have seen it usually isn't so that's why i said the diameter of a tree that would get harvested for a one piece body blank has to be about double that of a body blank width. now it takes 100's of years for a tree to grow to that diametre. and most of the time, any tree that has been harvested at that thickness has to be from a virgin forest. [not a plantation tree] and i say 100's years old because big trees from virgin forests are actually much older than people think. why? in their natural environment they are grown very closely together with other trees, therefore they have to compete for sunlight, so in actual fact the growth rings are much smaller that that of a plantation tree. plantation trees are growin several spaces away from each other so they get maximum sunlight exposure, therefore they grow faster and have thick growth rings. they also get harvested after about 20-60 years old. that's why old trees taken from virgin forest sound the best and are most prized.
  13. hi everybody i can truly say i have never ever seen a Gent Saw in shop in my whole life. so are they specifically made for cutting fret slots? i have seen coping saws, junior hack saws and the sort at the hardware shop. i also have seen these tiny blades for a tool called a fret saws. guitar frets, i don't know. so what could i use as an alternative if i can't get a gents saw?
  14. how many volts for a router is sufficient enough for guitar building?
  15. what i wrote sounds wierd doesn't it. give me a break dudes i'm tired.
  16. so it is not your strings then, so yeah, it's the pups. just my opinion, i really like the duncan 7 string pups. try them out if you get the chance. i did one time at a music shop and they rock. EMG pups used to be my fav, i have an 81 in an axe. most of my fav bands use them w/ 5150 heads too. i really like that tone, but it is used so much. i finally came across some duncans and i don't know, they just sounded more natural [more harmonics] then the EMGs. now i am a duncan lover.
  17. i agree with drak, forget the oven idea. besides, the baking of a guitar is only done depending on what paint is used. try something a lot milder, like some lamps. if you were using two pack, you would bake it, but they bake it with heat lamps. but then again, i wouldn't use any catalytic curing methods for my axe. i would let it cure all natural. then again, this is just my opinion. but take drak's words, forget the oven.
  18. cheers for the info dude. but yeah, most of the people in the auditorium have custom all australian cedar violins with ebony fingerboards. this seems to be their choice of tone woods.
  19. sorry everyone, i have a wierd sense of humour. people say i have no morals.
  20. hey ace, you have the funniest sign off. i could imagine you getting really pissed off with someone one day. it would kind of look like this. "F*** YOU!" so long. doesn't that look funny?
  21. wow dude, thanx a lot. that really really really helps.
  22. just a quick question. is a wax based product good for sealing pores?
  23. hi there in previous threads i have asked if it was neccessary to use primers or wood fillers to seal the pores. but i don't like the idea of using primers or wood fillers to seal the pores, and i want to do a clear finish over a stained finish but want to use a thin coat of poly. so would using shellac [or a product equivalent to sealcoat] to seal the pores, stain and poly be the best way to go about this? i have seen many products very similar to sealcoat so there is no problem in obtaining it.
