  1. Musn't...Admit...To...Liking a....Squier......damn it, my powers to resist have completelly escaped me. that is a damn nice guitar. is the headstock just the standard jobbie or did you do anything with it?
  2. if your having trouble with the solder not flowing easily then try to get hold of a can of flux. most solder has flux inside it but putting a dab extra on whatever your trying to solder will let it flow much more easilly
  3. The best place to ask for help about this would be the DIY Stomp Box Forum if your looking for the technical know how then Geo Fex has an article all about graphical equalisers JG
  4. The cat is cooler than the bannana. and it wouldwin in a fight
  5. if its fairlly dense and is used for furniture then it sounds promissing. if you can give some information on what sort of finish its given when used for the furniture that may be useful. im not gonna say its definatelly usable since tbh i dont really know a huge amount about this sort of stuff lol might wanna wait untill u got a few more opinions
  6. Welcome i know what you mean about chubby fingers lol. ive got the epitome of engineers fingers (picked it up from my grandad) and i found it a bit tricky to play some of the chords. after a pit of practise its usually ok but to make things easier for me when i was learning i got a nylon string with a wide neck.
  7. lol, cue you two bitching about the questions that you got wrong now btw guys, remember that the guy who started this post has to know how the circuits work. pointing the schems is fine but there's no point giving someone a tube screamer circuit if they dunno how the hell it works lol
  8. I think that my school is planning to do the systems and controls course next year. im gonna be one of the last guys to do the "proper" electronics course if you get what i mean lol. i dont really like the whole digital side of things, much prefer my analogue stuff. my AS project was a guitar amp however it wasnt anything special lol.
  9. Ok if your looking to make a distortion stomp box then the best site you can posablly read to start of with IMHO is this http://www.generalguitargadgets.com/v2/ric...tion/index.html explains everything you need to make a very simple box if i remember rightlly from doing my GCSE Electronics then you have to have a minimum of three different active components. so if you had a little booster circuit at the front of the box maybe something like a mosfet booster http://www.geofex.com/Article_Folders/mosboost/mosboost.htm and then an active tone control using an op amp then that should be your three components sorted. btw the hardest part of the whole thing is the write up. in my first draft of the write up i got 27 out of 100 lol, spent 2 days working on it and got myself 89/100 which was a bit better tho only got an A at results oh one more thing. if you have a chance to stay on and do AS or A level electronics then do it, it goes over a fair bit of stuff on op amp filter circuits and mosfet amplifiers, is quite interesting and is alot easier than GCSE in alot of ways. im fairlly confident of an A at AS lol nehu, hope all that helps and good luck with the GSCE, ifyouever need any help then feel free to email me G.John @t etoncollege.org.uk JG
  10. Dirty Sanchez. Oh those crazy boys fom the welsh valleys I'm actually welsh if you hadnt guessed lol and neither Wee Man nor Johnny Knoxville is dead. they were just stupid rumours lol
  11. Mkay heres my Nuclear Strat (I really need to come up with a better name lol) have a look at the original thread for the full spec Original Thread On to the pictures looking at the compotition i dont think i got a hope in hells chance of winning espescially with that damn spalted strat in here (damn you tsl lol) nehu, hope you liek it
  12. i hadto go for the Blues axe, i really like all of them but theres just something about that one. i think its because deep down i really want an SG lol
  13. Greg P, no worries, i need to come up with a better name for it, Nuclear-Caster is a bit cheesy methinks lol Biohazard, thanks, im really pleased with the headstock, it took me three goes to get it to look good and now that its finished it really sets the whole guitar off i think. i also had to do it to get rid of the crappy Jim Deacon logo that was on it lol Guitar Ed, it feels really nice, its the first strat-a-like that ive really had a chance to play and its everything i was hoping it would be, comfortable, fast neck and easy to play. as for how it sounds im really quite amazed with it. ive found that since the tone control is situated before the boost, i can turn the built in boost up full roll the tone control down and its an instant mid boost. by combining it with one of the simple distortion pedals ive made it literally gets the rock tone right on the head. i can't wait untill i have the cash to upgrade the pickups lol. as for building more i definatelly want to, ive learnt so much just from building this one. i may have to wait a little while tho due to exams and other school stuff but i have a gap year coming up j789, the change in colour is basically a poor boys burst but it does it fairlly quickly just at the edge before the front. i'll try to borrow my mates digital camera again so i can put another picture up for you many thanks for the kind words guys, makes this even more worth while Johnny
  14. Ok people, its been about 4 months in the making but ive finally finished it. my first project guitar. ill just give a quick rundown of what it is and what parts etc then ill let you see the pics lol Spec 3 Piece Alder body, Squire, not amazing wood but not too bad 1 Piece 22 fret rosewood fingerboard neck, Jim Deacon. pretty good actually tho might need a little more work to make more playable, more info on this later Bridge is a WD Trem in black. Tuners and elecronics is all off a squire, pickups as well Pickgaurd was made by me on the Laser Cutter here at school 5 Way pickup selector, 1 Master Tone, 1 Master Vol and the third Knob blends between normal signal and a signal routed through a Treble Booster circuit based on the one Brian May uses. the finish was entirelly dont with car touchup paintsfrom halfords. the clear was just automotive lacquer. there are a few sand throughs mainlly around the holes for the trem spring cover on the back (more about this later as well) total cost of everything comes to about £230 Body and neck were £100 dead on hardware and electronics was £90 paint came to about £40 in total everything except the paint was brought through the same guy, a Roy Skates. anybody in the UK looking for good prices on guitar parts, feel free to PM me for his Email. nehu thats most of the blurb. here are the pics ok things i'll point of before anybody else does Yes i know that in the trem cavity the claw to hold the springs is on upside down. i put it in like that, realised i dont it and then realised how much work it was to get it in. it doesnt affect the trem so i decided to leave it lol also around the trem cavity there are sandthroughs around the holes. this is because when i was using wet and dry sandpaper with water i forgot to block he holes with wax, hence the gran expanded and i got sand throughs. one important lesson learnt. there are also two big scratches at the end of the cavity nearest thetrem, those are from my first attempts to put the springs in. ive since found a much better way to do it. there ar a couple other little things that i would love to fix on this guitar but wouldtake a lot of effort for such a small thing. there is a sandthrough on the tip of the lower horn as well as a small chip in the clearcoat. also around the tuners on the headstock there are a couple of chips from where i put the ferules in (i think thats what they're called) these areall minor things that annoy me a little but im willing to put up with them what with this being my first guitar etc. so therewe have it. feel free toask any questions etc, kind words are welcomed critiscism is probablly fairenough lol. this will be entered in the ametuer GOTM tho given the entries this month i don't expect to win it lol Johnny G EDIT: moved pictures to photobucket.com since my old account didnt have enough bandwidth, Havn't been able to get better picture of blend yet
  15. i would have thought that a small solid state amp wouldnt be so bad voltage wise as a tube amp. granted they still run off 100 volts maybe butthats nicer than 400. easiest way of discharging caps is two leads attatched tothe ends of a highish power 10K resistor. you can even work out how long it would take the caps to discharge fully through the resistor lol, 5 * Resistance * Capacitance
  16. I'd agree a fair bit with Sacred here looking past the recording quality (which is to do with your recording equipment not you so doesnt really matter in this) technically your a pretty good player, or at least thats what i thought from the song you wrote. sacred does have a point tho. there just isnt any feeling. thats somethingthat comes more from knowing the subtlties of the song than just knowing the notes
  17. looks cool and very good fun. i was thinking of building something resembling a champ for my first steps into the world of tube amp building how much did the kit in its entirety cost? also is there a speaker in the cab (i think i can see one but not totally sure tell us how it goes, id like to hear this
  18. played that man, actually theres some amussing video of one of the teachers at my school murdering I Believe I Can Fly in a karaoke bar in france. that was a good one to watch.
  19. Dance like a white boy for 45 seconds and embarras yourself even more, but hey, its karaoke lol. i heard the song on MTV when they did a run down of film soundtracks. was very catchy. perfect thing for a one hit wonder
  20. Id love to get a 7 string, however id have to get it as a baritone so that i could go Stephen Carpenter style and drop it all down 2 steps to G lol. my next planned project is to get some walnut boards of a friend of mine, buy a 7 string baritone neck off Warmoth and build the sucka tho its a little way off yet lol
  21. a friend of mine has the 5 string ergodyne bass and its got a pretty nice sound imho. 1 active Pup and a piezo bridge could have something to do with it tho lol
  22. You guys are all being bloody stupid. the answer is Nija Pirates "HIIIIYYAAAARRRRR" see??
  23. IMHO, if you are looking for something with good distortion then multi-FX pedals arent the way to go. for a cheap and very good distortion stomp box i cannot recommend the Marshall Jackhammer more stronglly. it does the heavy rock to metal overdrive section ofthings unbeliavablly well. on the other hand tho for stuff like reverb and delay i would say that digital is probablly the best way to go if your not looking to spend too much. if i were you then id save up the cash to get a multi FX pedal and a distortion stomp box, maybe not at the same time but aim for it eventually at least

    Drop D

I actually drop the bottom string by hitting a harmonic at the 7th fret andthen matching it up with the 12th fret of the A string (actually G for me, i play drop C) its the same as wes's idea really but i prefer tuning by harmonics
