ah thats a good point lol. common sense should have pointed that out to me. to the best of my knowledge there is nowhere near me that would do but i'll have a look in the telephone book for cabinet makers and lumber yards within a reasonable area.

ah ok, thanks forthe info drak. ive had a look on toushstone tonewoods and for a piece of rock maple 700 by 100 by 55 mm its £16.82 which is about 30USD the cheapest stuff they have is Cedar in 750 by 85 by 28 mm for £8.75 (about 16USD) and they dont have any poplar or alder. would i be ok going with the cedar to save a few bucks or should i just drop the cash for 3 or 4 maple blanks and just expect to keep plowing money in untill ive got good?

it is a really cool piece of kit and a very nifty little circuit (yes i have a schem lol but i aint building it) at some point im planning to drop the cash to get a fuzz factory and a machine as well. pity that its so much of a dent in the budget for Z's stuff, but its worth every penny

Im fairlly sure that this post has been up at least once before but i cant seem to find it with the search function. basic question is thus. i want to start learning to make my guitars from scratch rather than just making guitars up from parts etc. im probablly going to carve necks using a spokeshave, rasps and sand paper and a jigsaw since i dont have the space for any large machines here. however seeing as i havnt carved a neck before i dont want to start on maple since i know im gonna screw up a load before i get one right and it could get expensive. so, the question, what wood would i be able to buy for really cheap that would at least be a good aproximation to working with maple? or do any guys know where to get maple neckblanks for cheap in the UK. either would actually be good cheers guys JG

well on http://www.tubesandmore.com they sell all manner of stuff and they have a section for amp handles, grill cloth and casters etc. i found these and it said they were the fender type casters. by the looks of it you screw that plate onto the bottom of the amp and then connect the castor into it so it swivels. the alternative to putting the castors on your amp is that you could just get a piece of good solid wood board, put castors on that andthen when uneed to move your amp. lug it up the 2 inches to get it onto theboard. hey presto, wheels without drilling into your amp. im sure you could come up with some way to keep the amp stable on the board. might be a good alternative

kyle that all seems about right to me. i dunno about 741 actually being higher quality that the 4558 but since ive never actually bothered looking into any of the data sheets for noise specs etc i cant reallycomment lol

thesolo is like a stone is really easy to play. theres no fancy finger work or anything in it but as far as im concerned thats not the point. playing its easy but coming up with it is the hard part. morello has managed to use the digitech on loads of albums and is always coming up with new things and ways to make it sound different

the fender casters will give your amp fender mojo and due to the positively influencing vibrations they will make the amp sound measureblly better. because of this they are also more expensive of course if you actually have common sense which i reckon most here do you will realise that the difference is simply the price. as long as the casters you buy are good quality ones they'll be fine. i wouldnt worry about getting fender specific casters. just check to make sure the ones you're going to buy can be easilly attatched to your amp and work out how you'll do it before buying anything.

the kits probablly will have been a set of different preamp tubes that have higher gain characteristics and would work in the amp. tbh if you already have 12ax7s in the preamp then to the best of my knowledge they are the highest gain generally used dual triodes.there may be others about butyoud have to look

lol you learn amazingthingsevery day dont you i find that LEDs give a really good crunchy overdrive sound and they're the shiznit for everything from easy blues to ballsy rock

if you're playing about with that then you may want ot have a look around for the guide to different diode sounds in dostortion pedals. i cant find it atm but it'll tell you all about how LEDs/signal diodes and Germanium diodes will go in stomp boxes and gives rough guides as to how they sound. have a look for it. ithink its at muzique.com somewhere

the gain formula for inverting opamps is simply the feedback resistor (resistor from output to negative input) divided by the input resistor. for non invertin opamps its equal to 1+ (feedback resistor divided by resistor from positive input to ground) i could give you alot more info on how to tell which is which but you'll be able tofind it in 10 seconds on google and im feeling lazy atm sorry lol

ok first things first ill giveyou a run down of the different modes andwhat they do. i have an origional so i dont have the divebomb patch that the newer ones have but i dont think im missing out much nehu there are 3 modes if you can callthem that. harmony, detune and whammy. harmony is exactlly the same as things like the Boss harmoniser except that you can change the pitch of the mixed note using the foot pedal. eg heel down it mixes in a fifth up, toe down it goes up to a 7th up etc this is 50% origional sound and 50% shifted sound. whammy just pitch shifts the note up by one or two octaves or down by one octave, two octaves or a second. this is 100% shifted sound, no mixing detune mixes the origional signal with a detuned signal. 2 modes, shallow and deep. on shallow the mixed signal can be detuned by 1 to 25 cents from heel to toe down. on deep it can go from 0 to 100 cents (ie a full tone) this WILL NOT sound like you've detuned your guitar by an entire step eg from E tuning to D tuning. its purpose is to create i kind of chorusing sound which imho if used well is really quite nice (i use it when i play slide guitar) the closest you will get to the sound of detuning your guitar like changing tunings is using the whammy option. and that doesnt really deal with even simple chords that well. this thing may have been origionally meant to be used as something to replace floyds but thats not what its become, its a whole lot more than that, just ask mr morello or agata of melt banana. there aint no floyd esque wankines there. as for the old Vs reissue it basically comes down to the size of your wallte. the wh-1 reissue is generally considered to be good but not quite as good as the origional for two reasons. theres a slight attack delay present with both of them but supposedlly its more noticable with the reissue. secondlly suposedlly the origional sounds better, more organic or any other cool buzz word people use. imho the origional still sounds noticablly digital but you need to expect that. i went for an origional for 3 reasons. one is that now have a job over my gap year but im still living at home, therefore no over heads therefore lots of disposable income. secondlly i think there's enough people say the origional is better to have some credence to the tale. thirdlly, i reckon that at the steady porice increase of these things they're only going to get more expensive. im looking into buying 2 or 3 more and just sitting on them for a few years. as with everything. its all a matter of opinion. go to a music store that has the reissue and play it. its close enough to the origional in most ways and has a couple new tricks. its also got thewhole midi thing going on so if that yanks your crank you're onto a winner hope all thats helpful man

yeah thats pretty much right. i have a couple of old bass amps that i got for free, both solid state. my god theres alot of crap on them. the power amp section has about the same number of parts as the bass man schematics ive seen and then there's the tone controls which while fairlly simple do take up a helluvalot of space. man when i build amps theres gonna be 3 volume/gain knobs and 3 tone pots. thats all anybodies getting and i dont care about hissy fits
