  1. Just a thought, is he okay with this? if i were you, i wouldn't refinish it at all. I know if i had my first guitar for a long time, and eventually i got really into guitar, i would NEVER sell it or anything. It would be my treasure. i would look at it and say "Hey! that nic was from the first time i ever tried to jump off a bass drum while playing guitar...stupid me..." "HEY! That dent is from that time my girlfriend stopped over my house while i was playing, and then she started making love to me before i took the guitar off, and it just fell off my neck, and dropped to the floor. She was my first!" "good times, good times..." my two cents.
  2. well i bought a neck off litch, a maple bass neck. I bought it to use the back on a big guitar at the end of the year, since it was only 20 bucks. Well, I want a new guitar NOW, so i've decided to build a cheap guitar, NOW. (in the next month or so) I don't want to go through a lot details, but I'm gonna cut the bass fretboard down to size, and build a back out of cheap maple. Truss rods are expensive (sorta) so i was wondering, could i cut out like 6 or so inches out of teh middle of the truss rod, and then re-weld the two back together? Or is there a correct way to do it, that's supposed to work? It's an ibanez neck, probably a pretty basic truss rod..
  3. OMG!!! FAB-U-LUS!!! You've gotta take a pic of that slightly dampened... I have an incredible urge to hump it.... must...refrain...from...humping....beautiful....wood.......... Now that is some grade A prime USA
  4. yes, if i ain't mistaken, thats a piece of flamed wood... (or is it just the pic?) If i had ANY pice of flamed maple, I would NEVER use it as practice!! Tell me you're not just gonna throw that away.. OOPS... sorry about the hijack... it was a personal demon that needed exersicing...
  5. looks verrrry nice... 200 aint bad.. IF THEY DIDN"T SUCK AS BAD AS YOU SAID!!!!
  6. if only it was meant for a regular nut.. soooo nice...
  7. did you fret her by your lonesome? Because thats gotta be hard to do 20 years later... BTW, great axe. I love that pickguard.
  8. No, i don't so. I migt be mistaken, but aren't alot of guitars built this way, so the 9v is only supplying battery powere when pluged in? And some famous renablistic common sense: With guitar pedals you have a 9v power supply, and you don't get shocked, or short out anything when you plug into them. But the again, those don't turn on until you step on em...
  9. My guitars headstocks will now all have the following name on the headstock "Kozera Instruments EST 2003" I plan to build a violin or banjo or mandolin or something, so Instruments fits better than guitar. Kozera is my last name...
  10. I have no idea. i couldn't find much info on the maker, which is Teisco Del Rey. I'll go down to 50... Teisco on ebay Thats the same guitar going for 200 bucks, exactly the same one i started with, except i swear it was '66, not '55... oh yeah, and the neck is tung oiled on the back.
  11. oh yeah, the tuners are new, I'll give ya the old '66 pair for free, too. The bridge is included, it's brand new, from stew mac. It's an archtop TOM. It's not on the posts in th pic..
  12. Here's some pics: I got the guitar for free, so all i'm asking is for what it cost me to reinish it, 75 bucks, or make an offer. I'm not 100% sure i'm going to sell it, only about 80%. It's red, as you can see. there is a burn-through from the power sander. The pups are old, so a bit noisy. The neck is unattached, and i couldn't get the intonation right, so i gave up. I refinished it myself, it was my first. it could also use polishing, with real polishing compound, from like stew mac.
  13. 20 bucks usd. HAHA, i'm kidding, unless of course, you're desperate.... The pics aren't working for me...
  14. warmoth sells em for 173 w/ rosewood fingerboard, and 188 w/ebony (both mahogany) They're good necks, just overpriced..
  15. Sorry, i searched for it, but I couldn't find it. I know wasteful posts have become an issue lately, and I tried not to ask a question not before asked. I see where your coming from, too muddy on the tone? Well, i'll try it, and any other info thats there will be appreciated. Also: alot of violins have wooden bridges... for what it's worth...
  16. They are the most beautiful instruments ever, it's my dream to build one.... HOT DAMN, that is niiiiiice Lex! A bit of history (or so i think) There are these violins called Stratavarius (sp?) there are like 4 of them on earth left, and to most, they are the greatest violins evermade, and NO ONE can match them. Notice STRATavarius and STRATocaster. I pulled this conclusion myself, so don't take it as word of full truth, but cool coincidence at least, or mybe Leo Fender was going for an instrument no one can match? Anyone have any more info on this? EDIT: Ok, I'm wrong. I have spoke with one of my buddies over AIM and he informed me i'm incorrect. It's Stradivarius, and there a few left, more than four he says. Sorry about that. I do love Violins though. But maybe Leo Fender couldn't spell (like me ) and he heard of the the Stradivarius by word of mouth, and wrote it down on a piece of paper, and... I feel dumb... Maybe just a cool coincidence? (not completely close coincidence, but close enough?) EDIT: I've been reading up on it, and there are about 600 left...
  17. Well i'm gonna ask the question, and try. The more i think about it, the more i think, if you want more tone from the wood, why not a nut made of wood? And a nice, heavy kind, like walnut or something. Anyone try this? Anyone have some behind the scenes info? And for the experiment: I just converted an old 70's 3/4 size acoustic to fretless, and i shined up all the pieces, and refinished the whole neck, headstock, and put a few coats of poly on the body to get some lost shine back. But, i lost the nut. Lucky me, it's a zero fretter (i love zero frets [oh, and think about how low the string action 'll be]), so doing a little experimentation aint bad. So, i've decided to make a nut out of some pine (it's all i have around). So i guess i'll se if it wears down over time and etc. But i mean, poly should be able to protect the wood, right?
  18. As LGM said, when doing something like this, ya gotta know when to stop. A mirrored pickgaurd would be going too far IMO, the black kind of, as LGM said, makes it gaudily cool, without being too gaudy. I think doing the headstock would be awesome, but if you do, you gotta do the trim thing around the tuners, as you did around the pickgaurd and grip and such, ta make it match. I almost forgot, FRICKIN' AWESOME. I love it. I always wanted one of my own.... but decided I'm not skilled enough to do it. oh, and one more thing, The pickgaurd cover looks too dull, it doesn't flow with the shinyness. I think that black cover would be perfect if it was made shiny, with like some clear coat and a bit of polishing, if at all possible. Great job.
  19. yea, my dad being a pro contractor/carpenter LOVES those ryobis. They are REALLY nice for their price, i mean really nice. I think I'm gonna buy a belt sander from them for christmas..
  20. Ya, i got the messed up neck, no the bod though, i have a few "plans" for that neck...
  21. maple to me seems to be faster, although not as visually apealing, but your fingers seem to glide across it sooo easily...
  22. I looked at the tutorials to give me an idea, but basically i took the 1 by 4 and i measured, and i started. I figure by the 5th one i do, i'll have developed a way to do it with ease. Tommorow I'm picking up a rasp or two, and a file or two, gonna try the rotozip to put in the headstock angle, and see where it goes... and Litch, I dunno if maple is available at home depot? but at home depot a 6 foot piece of 1 by 4 is 6 bucks, it's double that on stew mac... and "board feet" and all those fancy measurements on the web aren't much help...
