  1. I myself don't know much about the UV stuff BUT I know for a fact you could find more information on the UV method over at the OLF www.luthiersforum.com I know there are a fair amount of UV finishers over there.
  2. A great month once again! So many good choices, but in the end I'm a sucker for nice acoustics and Verhoevenc sure had one =)
  3. cream if you add a matching pickguard. Zebras if not. I think a guard looks sweet with a gold top.
  4. sweet dude, i like "actions speak louder than words". I like the inlay too, the joints make it look like outlines and adds a kind of artistic animation quality to the piece. Keep it up.
  5. Too young?..you might have explain this to me. Yeah I think Tommy does come through occasionally, he hasn't been through since I've been there though. We had Brian Mcfadden come through the other day and the boys from Ween...plus other artists often take the tour. Were actually working on a guitar at the moment for Tommy Emmanuel, I routed the dovetail earlier this week...its pretty cool when you get a guitar through and the custom sheet has the name of the artist on it and your thinking "I'm probably going to see them playing this guitar in the future" Its real cool... Yea, i'm 16 so by the time i'm 21 i'll have this luthier stuff down. Maton seems like a company that by no doubt will be expanding in the future. That means you'll need more people. I'll check back in 5 years *wink* (i can't believe that there's no winking smiley face).
  6. I'm about to glue on another fingerboard but i'm not sure which glue to use, i've used epoxy and it's a pain to work and isn't usually consistent0. Would Titebond or Elmers Wood Glue be suitable for fingerboard attachment?
  7. omg! that is sweet! I really really really like the offset black inlays (ebony?) on the maple fb. And that slim contour is strangely arousing. If it plays as good as it looks then you're set for life.
  8. oh my gosh!!! The dream job, but i'm still too young to move to Australia! If i was 5 years older i would move down tomorrow. You probably get this a lot Paris, but do you ever get to meet Tommy Emmanuel? Also, do you need any special degrees or anything to work there? andrew
  9. thanks guys, just looking at the huge piece downstairs i could tell it was going to be a real mess. Because it's so oily do you think it might be a little trouble to glue?
  10. I know it's been done before but for those of you who have used it, with a neck, where does it rank with stiffness according to maple and mahogany. How does it shape and finish? (i know it's oily). Would it be good for a neck thru electric guitar?
  11. Thanks guys! I live in Montgomery County, so it's a little ways away but i should be able to truck around to these places
  12. I can't seem to find any exotic lumber yards in my area. I live about 45 miles northwest of Philadelphia. I went to the Woodcraft place but they don't have much. Anybody know of a good one in my area? thx
  13. To take advantage of the template i suggest you get one of these, http://www.routerbits.com/cgi-routerbits/s...6902777_8673+47 And to sculpt the contours of the SG you should use a flat bladed spokeshave. You get the most control and cleanest results from using spokeshaves, http://grizzly.com/products/Flat-Spokeshave/H6438 good luck man, and work SLOWLY
  14. GOTM all the way man. That looks fantastic. With the pickups, the variex, the piezo and the trem all you need now is a midi. hahaha. it looks great
  15. i'm also a young one (just turned 16). I had absolutely no woodworking experience when i started but building instruments is all i do now, that and play of course. I'd love to talk to someone else about building. just pm me too btw, Zeb it's looking pretty good with the neck and all attatched
  16. looks great! i really think you could pass that off as a real Ric. I really like it!
  17. now THAT is craftmenship. I love it.
  18. I would go with the neo-archtop design that Verhoevenc brought up. You have to trust me when i say that the first one will take time, i'm still building mine. During the first one you learn the whole process and what to do and what not to do. I don't think you'd have enough time to finish one even if you worked fast. But the neo arch top design sounds pretty cool. Also the guitar in that link looks sort of like a more solid kind of ES 335 cause the mid section is suspended. Very cool stuff.
  19. That looks FANTASTIC. It makes me want to build an SG really bad! How did you do the carves on the edges? I always wondered how people did that.
  20. i actually just tried this a few days ago. Tung oil stain on a scrap piece of quilted maple dyed blue. It looked fantastic and was smooth yet glossy. No stain bleeding through the oil (6 or 7 thinnish coats). As far as i can tell it worked good. I used water alaline dyes from LMI and Formby's glossy tung oil which seems to work good over stains.
  21. that actually sounds like a fun idea. I'd personally love one cause i used to play cello for 7 years, it got boring so i switched to guitar, crossing the two worlds with a hint of mando sounds pretty sweet. And it looks good too.
  22. i just stumbled upon this beast. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/God...itar?sku=511873 it's an 11 string solid body fretless guitar with nylon classical strings made by Godin. .....Now i need to play one.
  23. Does a bolt on neck have to be attached to the guitar body in order to be adjusted properly? Also, does it help to be strung up while you are adjusting it?
  24. I'm looking for a descent DVD on building an acoustic steel-string guitar for about $40ish. Do you guys know any good ones that explain everything good?
  25. My favorite guitarist would have to be Xavier Swift (not his real name) from the band Preston Swift. He's just ridiculously good and can do basically anything. myspace.com/prestonswift Xavior Swift (from Preston Swift)- Fascinating ;myspace.com/prestonswift Steve Vai- The Crying Machine Sixx A.M. - Heart Failure Prince - Fury or the Super bowl 2007 halftime show Jimmy Page - Ten Years Gone Tommy Emmanuel - (any of his songs) Dan and Justin Hawkins (from the Darkness)- "I believe in a thing called love" and "holding my own"
