  1. I don`t like headless guitars also. I don`t like the look of it. I used to hate the telecaster headstock and body shape, a few years have passed and now I like it a lot, and think it looks good. about the comparison you made of the look of bare wood to your graphics and how long it took for the artist to paint the guitar... understand one thing: we love wood. we are crazy about it. we spend way too much money buying wood that we don`t even need, just because we love it. and with the excuse that one day, that amazing piece of bare wood, will turn into an amazing guitar. and trust me, it will. I have built 3 acoustics and 4 electric guitars, but over the past 2 years I bought enough wood to build more than 30 instruments. we just can`t resist seeing one nice piece and just let that go. we love working with wood. maybe your builder feels the same way, maybe not. but once you start building your instruments it becomes an adiction, like a tattoo. give it a try, you may feel in love with it too. and don`t worry about not winning GOTM, that doesn`t mean that you have to change something to win. since we can`t play the guitar we choose our favorite by other factors. way to many to list here, but each person has its own preferences. don`t try to please the others, do what you like, and be happy with it. some will agree with you, some won`t. we can`t please them all. my vote could not be to your instrument, but at the same time you may not vote for mine. there`s nothing wrong with it. sorry about my poor english. and don`t be so harsh with yourself and other forum members.
  2. I just bought one, LTD M1000. the one before that was bought 10 years ago. when I started building guitars, I lost interest in buying them. but this one really got me, I think its because I always wanted a guitar similar to the ESP that kirk played. first they made the KH2, but it was a bolt on, then the vintage KH2 came out, neck thru just like I wanted, but way too expensive, and now ltd has several models that are neck thru and looks very cool. the next one is gonna take another 10 years maybe. until then I will continue to build my guitars, and do it better everytime.
  3. safe T planer, then a drawknife to make the transition to the back of the neck.
  4. stolen? how the hell did that happened? that sucks.
  5. binding have other purposes besides the looks, - it protects the edge of the guitar from bumps, - it seals the end grain of the wood from the top and the back. - bindings DO change the sound of a guitar. (acoustic)
  6. +1 but on my tele neck I had to use the truss rod going the other way. the neck was way too stiff, so I removed more wood from the back of the neck and used the 2way rod to correct the backbow.
  7. I thought all specials had that extra wood in the cutaway area. I feel kinda sad because to me a lp special is one cool guitar, but I'm glad you like it now. and welcome to the guitar building world.
  8. 2 little drops of CA would do the job perfectly.
  9. http://www.woodcraft.com/family.aspx?FamilyID=282 Cabinet Rasp, Smooth Cut (#50), takes a Medium Handle #06B02 Price:$59.99 you won`t regret buying this one. my favorite tool in the shop.
  10. I use my spokeshave a lot. not only in neck shaping but also in the beggining stages of a carved top. I'd say go with the straight one. the curved one doesn't make any sense for me.
  11. I'd like to see a picture of that! endgrain don't glue well at all. so to make the pre shaped neck longer you must have gone thru a lot of trouble.a scarf joint seems to be the only way to go. is this how you glued the extra piece? to me, doing this successfully is way harder than routing a truss rod channel on a tapered neck. (and to me, it would be 10 times easier to make a new neck, than to do all this) could you please post a pic of what you've done? i'm just curious.
  12. hey guys, my friend was planning on sticking with the single coil pickup, but after all these comments on how good a mini humbucker is, we have to ask: what brands and models of mini humbuckers are out there? my guess is that you`re not talking about the hot rails kind of humbucker in a single coil size, but an actual mini humbucker. am I right? what do you guys reccommend?? one last thing, we need something that`s not gonna break the bank. are there any good options? thanks a lot.
  13. thanks for all this info guys. today I test fitted the bridge and the tuners, I also put some strings on to see if I need to shim the neck. everything is fine. now I need to shape the body, cut all the excess wood, and remove more wood from the neck, it's like a baseball bat! lol. here's how she looks now.
  14. well you asked for it, so now I have to say, I don`t like the carve either. sorry dude.
  15. hey blackdog, brazilian rosewood is getting hard to get too, there has been some people going to jail here. so no more brazilian for me, or anyone else. not even mr. reed smith himself. lol. (anyone noticed that the 513 has a mahogany neck now?) time to experiment with some other local alternatives. I`m hearing good things about granadillo as a substitute for brazilian in acoustic guitars. keep up the good work, dog!
  16. I think he can use the same one, just change the back with the top. that's how i do it.
  17. hey xanthus, the neck is imbuia, the fretboard is ipe and the body is a 2 piece quartersawn mahogany. it is indeed nice looking but is very thin (36mm) but hey, it's gonna be one light guitar. lol. my only concern is that the neck pocket could be weak (18mm thick). Do you think 18mm is okay for a bolt on design? just finished shaping the neck, i'll post some photos tomorrow.
  18. here's another one. I haven't finished the prs yet, but I started this tele for a friend who plays in my band. no carved top, no neck angle, no binding, bolt on... I'm a happy man now. here's a pic. see ya!
  19. I have a makita 3612 and it's a monster! perfect for table mounting.
  20. nice one blackdog, I wish I had access to a rosewood neck like that. keep up the good work
  21. hey blackdog, I will cut down to 22 frets, there's actually 23 frets slotted on that FB. the neck tenon will be exposed, maybe I'll glue a piece of mahogany that matches the top to make it less obvious, or maybe I could highlight it like the santana model does.
  22. started carving the top more pics here
  23. no you don't need it. I've done a couple of acoustics with fb bindings using just the fret cutter. I cut each fret to size, then make 2 cuts with the fret cutter, one paralel to the fret, one perpedicular, at each fret end, then i place the fret upside down on a piece of wood, and use a file to quickly remove the rest of the fret tang. worked like a charm.
