  1. ^ Thats fine, I'm pretty sure thats a normal thing to do. I do it all the time.
  2. I really like east Indian rosewood and Bolivian rosewood is pretty nice too.
  3. Just to update this heres where I am now. The neck is rough cut, and the templates are finished for the neck. http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r191/st...17/DSCN0668.jpg http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r191/st...17/DSCN0667.jpg http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r191/st...17/DSCN0671.jpg http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r191/st...17/DSCN0673.jpg
  4. I haven't really started this build yet because 1) I was on vacation and 2) I haven't gotten any ash yet. I hope to get some ash this week so that I can machine it and start working on this guitar. right now this is what I'm thinking of doing for the guitar wood wise ash back curly maple neck spanish cedar top rosewood fretboard spanish cedar headplate
  5. its Spanish Cedar which isn't too soft so it's not much of a concern. Spanish Cedar is very similar to mahogany. Here's what it is:
  6. just gotta set it up and screw the pickups in properly. they are just tacked in right now so that they don't come out and scratch the finish.
  7. Alright, the guitars top is now buffed. Im waiting until later to buff the back and sides because the finish is a little soft. http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r191/st...17/DSCN0528.jpg http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r191/st...17/DSCN0530.jpg
  8. I really like the look of the guitar in this thread so I think I'm gonna be tru oiling my next guitar, all my others are lacquered. Later this summer when I'm not so busy I'll be building a couple curly spanish cedar topped LP's.
  9. Im not looking for a finish thats easy to apply, but thats a bonus. I have an hvlp sprayer so applying a finish is no problem. I'm looking for something that feels good, and looks semi glossy. from what I've been reading and seeing tru oil looks like the stuff.
  10. blow torch and pipe is definitely the way to go if you don't want to buy a heat blanket. my first attempt at it came out just as good as my first and second attempts at a heat blanket bend came out.
  11. Thats awesome. Is there anywhere that you can order tru oil online, i know you can get it at gun places in small bottles, but is there anywhere you can order a bigger bottle of it.
  12. next time I make a stewmac order im definitely going to get some of those micromesh pads, some nut files, and some acoustic tools.
  13. that seems pretty easy to apply. I might have to try out some tru oil on my next build. how does the tru oil feel?
  14. I agree with rich. I have an 18" laguna and it resaws amazingly. No complaints at all.
  15. ^ I dont do pointy guitars, but when I do other things that require pointy routed objects I do them by hand or cut them extremely close to the line then route. I cut extremely close to the line most of the time anyway because I don't want to risk tearout by taking too much wood off with the router.
  16. looks nice man! im jealous though, where did you get a 10" radius router bit?
  17. thanks. The reason I bought this guitar in the first place was because I loved the shape. I modified the carve a little bit to make it steeper than the schecter's carve, and to make it a little bit longer on the bass side so that it would be more comfortable to play.
  18. So, I was bored one day and was thinking about my first guitar and how I hadn't played it since I built my first guitar. I hadn't played it due to it being a righty flipped lefty. Because of the flip the knobs always got in my way during my playing and I just got annoyed and put it aside. I knew this project was bound to happen right when I started building guitars, so I just took the guitar downstairs to the shop and laid it there. About a year passed and I had pretty much forgotten about the guitar, it was buried under a pile of wood. When I was looking for some decent mahogany for a LP I rediscovered it and put that project to the side (I get distracted so easily.) Before I knew it the guitar was completely torn apart and the hardware was in a bag. I quickly made a template of the body, cut it out routed it sanded it etc. Now I'm just in the process of waiting for the paint to cure so I can wetsand and buff . progress pics: http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r191/st...17/DSC00396.jpg http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r191/st...17/DSC00397.jpg http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r191/st...17/DSC00398.jpg http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r191/st...17/DSC00399.jpg
  19. definitely stick with the dovetail joint. changing stuff at the last minute might turn out bad, everything is going smoothly it seems, just stick to your plan. I dont understand your question with the dovetail.
  20. wow, that looks really impressive man! That's gonna be a lucky baby!
  21. I've vacuumed a 1/2 inch top with no trouble at all using this press vacuum kit: http://www.veneersupplies.com/product_info...roducts_id=2795 pump: http://www.veneersupplies.com/product_info...roducts_id=1099
  22. thats pretty cool. I understand the concept of the winder, but where can i get a reed switch. Is there anywhere locally or do I have to order it through the internet.
  23. Just a quick question. Since I've never done a set neck like this I need to know for my plans how deep the tenon should go into the body. I know length and width of it i just need the depth of it.
