  1. I just tried 81 s for the first time in at least 10 years and wasn't blown away by them. It's weird because I am born and breed on Metallica and Slayer. If they were cheaper I'd try em more often, but I don't think the extra 40$ over my XL is worth it to me anyway. I do have to say that the pots and easy dissconnect at pickup is quite cool to have with the pickup.
  2. It's ironic that you could go to a junkie needle exchange and ask for some needles for woodworking and they won't give them to you unless you promise to use them for heroin
  3. Very cool.Really clean work.Great job. That must sound great with the Alder body.
  4. Thanks guys I really like this guitar.I finished the frets and strung it up. This guitar was the first I have built that after assembly there were no problems. I tuned it up and not a rattle to be found.Everything is going to well with this,I think I have bad luck coming I need to stain and oil the control cover then take a final pic of the guitar. I did put some neck angle but I can't say how much because I eyed it up. I'll measure it to see. The action can go really low.Myself,I like it a little high so I'll get it set up. That neck is unbelievable.I can't say how much I love that neck.Very Fast.
  5. Body is a Mahogany explorer Neck 5 piece Purpleheart/Maple 25 inch scale 24 fret wide high jumbos undercut to fill in ends Side dots on the board(I like the way they stand out) Rosewood board Graphtech nut Emg 81 PU and Electronics Eboney Knobs My favorite economy hardtail Grovers My rear control cavity has the input recessed into it.I chipped it,so I'm building another one. The neck and body are finished in polymerized tung oil.About 10 coats wiped off after 10 minutes.Letting dry 24 hours in between coats. Then clapmans mineral oil beeswax finish for salade bowls is wiped on and left over night and buffed dry 4 or 5 times. After oiling I used 0000 steelwool to level. The body has had a little minwax rosewood stain on it before oiling. This guitar feels unbelieveable. This neck is soft and smooooooooooth. Crazy smooth. It is very light.I will weigh it,but it won't be much.I rasped a lot of wood off of that. I need to wait for my crowning file to get here to finish my frets and start playing. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v116/Ibr...uildem/x1-5.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v116/Ibr...ildem/x-1-2.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v116/Ibr...buildem/x-1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v116/Ibr...ildem/x1-21.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v116/Ibr...dem/smxcrop.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v116/Ibr...ildem/x1-15.jpg
  6. You could do a quick simple fix and use one of those acoustic straps that tie around the headstock after the nut.I did that with a Warlock with balance issues for years.
  7. Speaking of wastes of bandwidth. Is this Oprah? Why are we all clogging up more bandwidth talking about wasting bandwidth?
  8. I'm building an Explorer with a bolt on neck. When you use the proper size forstner bit there is still a gap that is there to allow for finish thickness. My problem is that I'm going to Tung oil the body.Could I insert them all into the position they will be in when bolted and then use some CA to fill the small gaps?
  9. I notice the XL-500 sounds like the Cowboys from Hell cd.It will if you have an amp with any worthy gain to it.That IS what it sounds like. I was under the impression that Dime even still used the XL-500 while he was under contract with the other company. If you like SD so much, maybe try that Scott Ian Diablo. It's a passive bladebucker. I have no clue about it though other than you could buy 3 Bill Lawrences for 1 of those.
  10. I have a 2 Hum 2 way toggle guitar. When I turn the volume down on both pu's,there is still minimal volume. These pots I think were from guitar parts depot. They say Alpha B 500k. Any ideas?
  11. I had an import Warlock as my only guitar for 6 years.I think I got my moneys worth.Only $300.I played and play thrash. That $300 guitar got me the sound I wanted.I could have went and spent 2G's on some custom shop whatever that would have come with all the bells and whistles and improved the sound I was looking for by 1%.Or I could take my "cheap"Warlock and put in some EMGs or a XL-500 and take all the money I saved and buy a nice amp. It's all about what you need, expect, want, and can afford.
  12. I was wondering what file you guys like to use to crown your frets. I was using a borrowed one from a friend. His was just a quarter round file he found.I guess I should bite the bullet and buy one.
  13. That's cause thats Ricky off the Trailor Park boys. White Trash???You bet
  14. I go to Fender.com and they have direct over head shots. Then I print it out as a 4 page poster print.Take a last fret or Pu spacing measurement to get it right. It only took me three tries to get a strat within a half a MM. Before I print I crop so most of the neck is gone leaving only the part that fills the neck pocket.
  15. Footprint planes are nice and affordable. They are made in England from Sheffield steel. If you're in Canada,HomeHardware stores sell some Footprint planes too.
  16. I like the practical design of strats. They were made for the player. They are kinda like a jeep. Not too pretty,no super options, just great at what they're for.Is there any other guitar that has a voice that is that easy to recognize?
  17. I just completed a neck that I thought I didn't want side dots. That was stupid of me The neck is only finished in tung oil and beeswax.Do you think I could just go ahead and put them in the finished neck?
  18. I've only built 6 necks,but I only used a bandsaw once.The others I just used a handsaw and a straight edge to cut against.Then a little block sanding.
  19. I was wondering if anyone could tell me of a good aftermarket strat pickups for the neck position? I'm looking for the bell like glassy neck sound. If you know what I mean
  20. Maybe try the cakewalk forums.I bet some tech could help you. Unless you're using a cracked version
  21. I was wondering if peeps wanted to post some good radio links. I have a good blues channel. Blues Train radio link below http://www.live365.com/stations/steviegeo
  22. Here goes, Say I build a perfectly flat neck and perfectly radiused board. Then I level the frets to be flat.So then I put a straight edge on my neck and frets and it is flat. When I string it up,it will slightly upbow from string tension.Am I supposed to counteract that tension with my truss rod to bring it back to flat? Do I leave this? What is a properly built guitar neck supposed to look like strung up? Is a little upbow needed?
