  1. Haha! That doesnt surprise me. Doug came with me to see SYL on their UK tour a while back, tho he had never heard them before that afternoon!!!. I remember him standing there in utter amazement with his mouth wide open throughout the whole gig! He said then he would have love to build a guitar for Devin. Doug loves his metal! Do you have any idea where you saw that pic?
  2. You may have a point. Perhaps I let the idea of those bridges govern my choice of options. Nice one WeZv
  3. Im Jeff and I live on the border of Kent and London in the UK. A Hobbiest mostly, but I do have the advantage of being personal friends of Doug at Blackmachine guitars (www.blackmachine.net) and Ive learned a lot from him and his work. I tend to get my friends guitars shoved in my direction saying "FIX THAT!" which I do and generally have a good response to the work ive done. My first guitar is a Flying V, simply because its the best shape a guitar could be! Ive half built it (Body done, No neck yet) but Ive put the project on hold as it became obvious that I have neither the space or proper tools to carry on, plus my wife is disabled so I tend to spend most of my time caring for her and bringing up our three children, however, building guitars has been a dream of mine for the last 15 years, so I spent most of this time researching, reading, playing guitars and listening to guitar makers. I am currently building a workshop upstairs in he master bedroom (that we dont use anymore because my wife cant use the stairs), so when thats done (probably after christmas) Ill get on with churning out a lot of stuff. I have a vast collection of CAD drawings I do in my spare time. Right now, i have about 20 different designs which are mostly original, but some are variations on a theme. CAD is your friend! I am always surprised at the level of detail I can get in a design from drawing it first, full size, then printing it out and examining it up close. You often solve a lot of problems in this way before you even start building it!
  4. One flaw I spotted here is that you assume people are going to sell their creations. To be that good so you can make a living at being a luthier, your stuff had better be better than 99% of shop bought axes out there. Most of us here are amatuers or hobbiests (is that even a word?) We build for ourselves, not others, (unless its specifically for customers - Friends dont count). Besides, I bet the person who builds it could probably find more flaws in their own work than you can! At the end of the day (apart from being really dark) its down to the owner what they do with it. As an example, one guy here in the UK won £6.5Million, blew it on drugs, women and buying old cars which he then raced around a field till he got bored and then set them on fire. We may all think "What a waste!" but thats his business. We may have an opinion on how pointless it was him winning the money just to waste it, but its his to do with what he will. Quite why people get SOOOOO worked up over this is beyond me.
  5. I think you could actually use it as long as you were sure you glued it correctly. I did a repair to a fretboard that had peeled off the neck just like that. Its not too difficult, but you would run into the possibility of screwing the scale length and thus the intonation.
  6. Yeah thats the ABM one, Someone pointed me top that today. Im trying to find cheaper than that. At £17.10 ($30) EACH, my 7 string project will cost me nearly $250 for the bridge!!! Are they cheaper in the US?
  7. errr..... Cant find it now! OK, the original question still stands! I only found the warmoth ones after much searching on the internet. I have asked a friend of mine who used them on this.... Full pic ...but he hasnt got back to me yet anyone?
  8. so... what does it do exactly? Oh, and DJ, you beat me to the Justin Hawkins thing!
  9. Bolt on? If so, you could raise the neck angle slightly by installing a shim under the neck joint. That would alter the length of the string a tad and you could then intonate corectly. Other than that......put it down to experience and dont do it on your 2nd one
  10. If she allows you to "score" her because you have a hand made guitar, she aint that special in my book. Still, each to their own. keep posting pics. Your dedication is impressive p.s I lay 4-1 odds on him losing a finger by the time hes finished!
  11. I agree. Brass should be easy to machine, provided you have the machines to do it. If not, just buy one. You *COULD* build individual one piece saddles. It looks much more special! A friend of mine uses graphite saddles with an ebony block he made by hand, so it *IS* possible.
  12. Definately use the Epoxy method. It will fill the holes and dents and you can sand it flat rather than take anything off the neck itself. I once fixed a body using this method that someone had stabbed multiple times with a screwdriver! OK, so the repair *LOOKS* obvious but you cant feel it under your fingers, and he was happy. Got any pics?
  13. Im not sure I would have used Wenge in a neck like that. The stuff can be quite brittle when aligned like that and put under stress. You can see where the wenge fibres have just ripped apart causing the break out in the first place. Consequently I would be worried about gluing it in case it happened again, but its your call.
  14. I just realised this has been asked elsewhere. Sorry Please remove this thread
  15. http://www.warmoth.com/hardware/bridges/br...ges_hipshot_ssb in a set, preferably... a - for a guitar and NOT a bass, tho 7 and 8 string sets may be an idea b - cheaper c - in the UK (not essential) Has anyone used them before? What are they like? etc....
  16. Anything in the cheaper end of the Dean Gutars range is a good investment for a beginner. Even their mid priced ones are cheaper than most and are extremely playable.
  17. Theres lots of videos up on Youtube which cover sweep picking.
  18. I dont care if people post pics of guitars being destroyed. I think its a shame that other people think they are entitled to have such an extreme opinion on it to keep posts coming on and on. You dont like it, fine. Lets not let this descend into a brawl though. Some areas of this forum are unfriendly at the best of times (I remember when I was new here and I asked a simple question if anyone had any leads for wood suppliers in my area of the UK. I got flamed for it!). As I said elsewhere, I DONT believe burning instruments is the way to destroy them. Theres plenty of wood there to go toward recycled products. Your local civic centre/Disposal site has the capabilities to take your wood and turn it into paper, agricultural product or somesuch and prevent the growing worldwide problem with Carbon emmissions from the burning of unwanted rubbish. Recycling is the way to go. Metal is melted down and reused. Plastic goes to make Pallets and dustbins, Wood makes Paper, Sawdust etc... I will say again here for completeness that those of us who take this hobby seriously enough do have the responsibility to make sure that wood species are recycled and sustainable, but I understand that ITS A PERSONAL CHOICE and not open to discussion. Im happy with that position. I think we should all be the same. Oh, and Michael Jackson once destroyed 250 Gibson Flying Vs in one of his pop videos. He still goes on to sell millions of copies of his albums. I think that mean No-One cares, which is sad in a way....
  19. Ive looked into this before. In the UK, Maplins sell electronics Kits to build 200W mosfet power amps, which I was considering trying. None of the electronics look *THAT* difficult. I wasnt aware there was a web site/forum dedicated to it. Thanks for the info, Ill have to look into this more!
  20. The only reason I can see for NOT burning guitar failures is the fact that its contributing to carbon emmisions. The paint, wood, plastic and metal that gets consumed in the flames is NOT environmentally friendly, and for a group of would be luthiers and professionals that this board attracts, whos pleasure and sometimes businesses depend upon sustainable wood sources that are being effected by pollution, should be more environmentally aware. Wood is recycleable, as is plastic and metal. I would prefer to see a WOR (Wall of Recycling) policy, but I guess im just a tree hugging hippy at heart Apart from that, I understand the reasons behind destroying creations that are failures. All evil scientists and those whit plans of world domination destroy their failed creations!
  21. Do all colours! Starting black in the centre and fading out red to orange at the edges. one thing... Did you HAVE to do dot inlays? I HATE them
  22. Hey bro, Wow... Nice... Fantastic lines on the body... Tagua? never heard of it, but looks fantastic and is, more importantly, Environmentally friendly! Ill have to try it. Whats the tonal properties of it? Do you know? I'm not sure about the scale length. As I said to you once before, Doug at Black Machine thinks anything shorter then 30 inches is going to play havoc with the intonation of a .70 bass string tuned to F or F# over a 27 3/4 scale length,. Still, Ill be interested in seeing how it turns out. if it is a problem, Perhaps you can tune everything up one step to a C based tuning (Carcass do!) if it does give trouble at that length, but we will see! Still, it looks amazing from here. Cant wait to see this one finished Matt. Still loving your stuff!
