Pex657
I am planning to make my own nut saws, by super glueing strings to a stick, so i can saw a nut. Which type of nut material would be best for doing this? thanks, pex657

www
Any nut material will work with the right cutting tool, but I don't think your idea will work well. I do not believe that the strings will cut most material made for nuts, especially the unwound strings. The strings are not designed for cutting and if the wound strings do cut it will take a long time. If you can't buy expensive nut files you could try a set of inexpensive needle files (sold at most hardware stores). I used them for a long time untill I purchased the right files. I just had to take my time and measure often while trying to keep the slots the right size.
jay5
I think the Bennedetto book shows how to make such a tool with pieces of old bandsaw blades. I agree that a string wont cut any nut material.
Pex657
ohh.. i read about it in some guitar repair book though, forgot the name. I guess i will just try to save up and purchase some saws.
PerryL
If you have a hobby shop close to you, they have those inexpensive Xacto razor saws that are handy for that as well and they don't cost an arm and a leg.
kbrmiller
Another tip for cheap nut files I've come across but not yet tried is to cut teeth into a set of automotive feeler gauges.
kenneth_b
I had to open my nut up (ouch!) because I use fat (013's) strings. I used some emory paper folded over a feeler guage. Dan Erlewine suggests using the wound strings as a file.
