darren wilson
Yeah, but can you actually make anything guitar-oriented out of it? It doesn't even look big enough to make a bookmatched top out of.
bigdguitars
oops sorry bout that. Dimensions are 14.5x18x1.75 Just got it from buzzsaw for only 70 bucks.
Cloud
Interesting pattern, but I am still more of a white flamed maple kinda guy. So what kinda wood is that anyhow?
bigdguitars
its a maple burl, drak had me inspired... never worked with a burl on a guitar, so will try it...
Maiden69
with the dimensions you can make a 1 pc body, 2-3 1pc tops or up to 6 1/4" bookmatck tops. Good deal.
darren wilson
Nice slab! You could probably make a really nice Tele out of it.
Drak
Nice slab! You could probably make a really nice Tele out of it. And for $70.00, that was a good deal, just don't screw it up, make sure you know exactly what you're attempting to do and get -all- your details worked out ahead of time, that's not a piece to go experimentin' on. bigdguitars
spoken by a master. I will be contacting you on this one drak since its my first burl top. will be fun trying to resaw this... right now I am thinking 4 tops, split down the middle. One will be an lp my fav style, one a tele and the others might sell... I will make sure to use my buddies drum sander on this one to get even... westhemann
this wood demands ultra clean routing.please nothing freehand on this one.you don't want to have to have a pickgaurd to hide flaws it is a very nice piece and if it was me,i would go all out on it....it would probably end up as a 3/4" one piece top on a sabre style neck through. but an lp and a tele will also be nice

darren wilson
it is a very nice piece and if it was me,i would go all out on it....it would probably end up as a 3/4" one piece top on a sabre style neck through. Yeah, resawing it into three bookmatched tops seems like a shame when you've got a piece big enough to do a one-piece top (or two).
toddler68
I agree with darren wilson: screw the bookmatch! Cut that thing down the middle and have two thick-ass tops that you can carve into like a fiend! Man, I love burl maple. I just got this for my first commissioned guitar. Explosive burl! The client even picked it out!
www
That is a super piece of wood there! Mighty fine, I must say.
jer7440
Is maple burl like that a PIA to carve?
toddler68
Is maple burl like that a PIA to carve? The figure itself didn't pose any difficulties. The only problems might arise in the form of crevices. Unless you want to fill them, you are stuck with big open cracks. Although, the turqoise inlay is a novel idea that I hadn't thought of.
