cwoodall
There's a lot of good wood out there. Some priced good, some not so good. I live just outside the Houston area. I have a hardwood supplier just down the road about 10 miles. He does a lot of mill work for cabinetry, etc, but he stocks some of just about every kind of hardwood there is, domestic and exotic. I'm starting a LP project and bought some African Mahogany and hard maple. The top won't be as pretty as highly figured maple, but it has nice grain pattern. I really like the AF. Mahog. Anyway, I don't know what prices are in the mid and north US, but here's what I pay here: Af. Mahogany/$4.40 bd.ft. Hard Maple/$3.45 bd.ft. Ash/$4.00 bd. ft. Does that sound about right?????? I know I'll end up ordering a quilted maple or similar top on the next go-round. Thanks, Curtis
ooten2
Curtis, I live in the Houston area also, Humble/Kingwood to be more specific. The hardwood supplier you mention, is it Houston Hardwoods? I've seen the website, but never visited the store. Who is the supplier you mentioned? Another wood supplier that I haven't seen mentioned on this thread is here: http://yumahardwoods.homestead.com/musical.html They have some nice looking burls, and a decent selection of body blanks, but I haven't ordered anything from them. I've emailed Gallery Hardwoods and received very quick responses from Larry, but every time I call them to place an order, the phone is busy!!! If you like poplar that is warped and twisted, you could always go to Lowe's or Home Depot!! lol Ok, Ok, I actually bought a decent poplar board at Lowe's that was reasonably flat, and even had a nice tap tone, and used it for a body. It was one of my first experimental builds, and it turned out ok.

bigdguitars
durawoods on ebay is my main supplier. They are far the best people to deal with. They send the stuff fast, packed correctly. figure is much better than what I expect. Wood is clear and clean and he does not list his wood as AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA quilt. I have spent so much cash with this guy love the wood and very very nice people. plus his prices are so much better than anyone else. oh yea he has a site now http://www.3dhardwoods.com/ Edited February 25, 2005 by bigdguitars

cwoodall
ooten2, Houston Hardwoods is it. They have a lot of stuff for a small place. If you need anything done like putting a straight edge on one side or planing, etc, they can usually do it right then while you wait. A good bunch of guys they are. They are over off of Hwy 290 and 34th St. I'm just off of Hwy 290 and Barker-Cypress. Good to see a fellow Texan that has this sickness too! ooten2
Curtis, Thanks for the info on Houston Hardwoods. I'll have to check them out some time. I don't have a planer, and man would that make life easier if I had some straight edges to work with! Sickness? lol It is kinda like a sickness... Good luck on your guitar! ooten2
This is a VERY good post. I love this forum! I bought a bookmatched spalted maple top from "nicemaple" on ebay, and it's a great piece. He lays out a guitar body template over the wood to give a better idea of what the top will look like, as well as the size. It has alot of colors and designs from the spalt, but doesn't seem to be too rotten yet. The worst part about this is, it's hard to decide what part of the piece to cut off as scrap, because it's all so beautiful!
johnsilver
CWoodall and Ooten2, I also live in Houston. I've used Houston Hardwoods a lot for mahogany mostly. They are good to deal with and and will mill to spec. I found a 6/4 piece of curly maple there and they resawed it very accurately and then planed it. Good stuff. ooten2
Hey Johnsilver, Houston is ganging up on the forum! I've heard all good things about Houston Hardwoods. I'm going to check them out soon. I don't have a planer, so the milling would really make life easier. I didn't see limba on the list of woods they carry, and that's the only down side from my point of view. I could always go with mahogany instead. Thanks for the info! doug
I have a question for those of you who may have bought guitar tops from Buzz Saw intl. on Ebay. Was it dry enough to use, or did you need to get it kiln dried after? They have some cool tops, but few if any say kiln dried. They are just listed as seasoned. And thanks xebryusguitars for that great list! I like Durawoods/3Dhardwoods too. Great people. EW and Gilmer are cool as well. Gallery has nice stuff, but the guy is somewhat off his rocker I think. You can never call him. -Doug

tdog
Will I have access to this thread forever?? ← Anytime I find a good source for wood or tooling or some other such supplier, I make a file in the "favorites" tool bar on my computer. I have at least 50 different websites under the file name of "WOOD". Then I don't have to do any searching for threads or do any Google type searches if I can't remember a web address. Here is another place to get some terrific wood in the Boston area. http://www.righteouswoods.com/
Sambo
Just another good site. http://www.northridgehardwoods.com/ Cant remember where i found this, but the prices are reasonable for high grade maples.
