Brian
I have aquired some Sprage Difilm Mylar paper radial lead capacitors from the 50's and 60's. What I am looking for are 3 volunteers that would be willing to swap out the .047 capacitor on their own guitar and report back any differences they may or may not find in terms of sound quality. These capacitors are very large compaired to the modern ones as shown below with the antique NOS pictured on the right.
Brian
Moved this from the advanced chat section to see if anybody would be interested in an experiment.

If you're still interested send me a mail g_hjelmare@hotmail.com.

Brian
Hi Paul, What size cap do you need to do it? I have several different ones here, If I have the size you need I'll send it to you for free.

PaulNeeds
What size cap do you need to do it? Good question. I'll open up the control panel later and have a look. How about some before and after mp3s to add a little more interest to the experiment, and involve other readers in a blind poll, perhaps? I'll drop you a pm later, ta. Guitarfrenzy
Seems like I remember that you can buy a capacitor that works like a pot resistor... except a cappacitor... wonder if anyone can find one and make it where you can adjust that somewhere on the guitar.. hum.. sounds like a nice project to work on ... lol
krazyderek
ya... that's what a TBX does isn't it? puts a cap and resistor on there so depending on how you turn the balance pot you get a hotter or duller sound... i like to call it the "deep fried or microwaved" control
G_urr_A
Ok, I got the cap some time ago. As far as I can hear, the clean sounds warmer, or fuller with the new cap than with the original, and with distortion it sounds less muddy with the new cap. If anyone wants recordings of the guitar before and after the change, just give me some way of uploading the stuff (can't mail it, too big), and I'll get to that in a few days. Roli
Just upload it to a free site, like www.angelfire.com, or tripod, or something similar from that 'build your own website for free' bunch. I am really eager to listen the results.
Brian
Yeah a result, I was beginning to think maybe you guys forgot about us
G_urr_A
I think I lost the recordings in a hard drive crash a few days ago. I haven't had time to see what's happened, what can be saved, and so on, but they're probably gone. I'll try to get some time to see if they are though, cause I'm not sure. G_urr_A
Sorry, the water pipes to our house broke down, so we were without water for 4 days, so I haven't had time to get the files up yet. I'm in a bit of trouble with my computers too, so I don't know when I can get the files up, but I think we may be looking at something like thursday or friday.
