rokeros
Yep, on and on with now 7 weeks left to finish my first ever guitar build. The most i've done before is to replace a neck. Thats it. Now I am spending USD$500 to build my first project. THe neck is on its way, but the body design is still not 100% done yet. Stupid CNC accuracy! Here are some progress pics of the neck being done in my school D&T workshops. rokeros
erm..I am painting and building in school. They have quite a few facilities including a milling machine, a 20 feet lathe, CNC machining and etc... Plus a whole room for handtools, my favourite has to be the rasp and the expensive protable drill with laser guide, trigger speed control and autolocking bit mechanism. rokeros
Yep I couldn't decide on the body and my design teacher wanted me to build my own style. If you guys know shamray and the icefly, well i'm building that body. Couln't get my own design to work out. Screwed UP. Yer, very similar to that. GOnna add mods such as a brain moore bent top, string thru and stuff. What do you guys think is a good string thru patten after a TOM bridge? rokeros
OK now, my mock-up of the body ready for CNC. See what you guys think. Any faults? Comments plz!! Havn't had much on this thread. http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a120/rok...cs/Mock-Up1.jpg http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a120/rok...cs/Mock-Up2.jpg http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a120/rok...cs/Mock-Up3.jpg http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a120/rok...cs/Mock-Up4.jpg Edited March 7, 2006 by rokeros
rokeros
An update. This is the final file which will be sent forwards to CNC. And can someone please say something. Is this thread not even worth looking at? Hello? Cutting on machine tomorrow for prototype so guys better make comments fast Here: http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a120/rokeros/Final1.jpg http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a120/rokeros/Final2.jpg http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a120/rokeros/Final3.jpg http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a120/rokeros/Final4.jpg http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a120/rokeros/Final5.jpg
thegarehanman
Looks pretty good. I don't like the way the fly horn has been integrated, but then again it's not my guitar. Good luck.
Thunderblitz
great work so far But I dont like the upper horn. I think that makes the upper notes (from high strings) untouchable. I hope you have long fingers lol
rokeros
The final picture may make some think its weird, but thats because it is not totally flat birds eye view. So it may look out of proportiona;ity. Done the pickup rings and cavity cover today on laser cutting CNC. The material 2mm mirror acrylic. 1st try and fits like a dream. I won't post any photos of them as it doesn't seem like there is a point as this thread is not doning well at all. Its kinda discouraging really to see my hard work being ignored like this. OVer 700 views and 9 posts. Man this must be a record for the least replys and most views. Nevertheless it may be that this guitar is so perfect that there is nothing to say about it. But I highly doubt that. lol Edited March 8, 2006 by rokeros
psw
If you check out links on the Iceman you'll see I am a bit of a fan, but I don't quite get the idea of cross-breeding it with a parker...nevertheless, there's been a few so someone must like it. Here's a link to the shamray version...amazing finish on the thing...ICEFLY But, personally I like the Iceman just as it is...or an original design....can't think of any cross breeds that I've really liked...sorry (but don't let that stop you....someone else at PG was making one too as I recall) pete
TonyB7539
It looks good so far, but to me it just feels impersonal if you aren't physically getting in there and making the thing by router and template... of course I am all for CNC templates, but that's another thread... Maybe I just feel like you aren't really building it if you let a computer do all your work. I am a hands on kind of guy.
rokeros
ya. but considering that I have 2 weeks exactly from today to complete every aspect of the manufacturing process including setup, then hand making is not very ideal in this situation. Stupid coursework deadline. are people just 100% against this, just simply guys say "Y" for you like or "N" if it is not worth building. Btw, i am still gonna build it. Just need view. thegarehanman
If you put in that carve and switch setup like in psw's, I'll be in love with it. Although, it seems like those switches wouldn't be conveniently locate, but that's beside the point. None the less, it doesn't matter what we want. Are you in love with this project or are you just doing it because you can't think of any other body you'd rather make? That's what really matters. peace, russ
rokeros
i love it. in fact the dxf file can directly from walter (icelfy creator). He gave me the original copy but I wanted to change some things ro make it a bit orignial.
jer7440
Hey dude, have you cut this thing yet? Don't let the anti-cnc guys get you down. ha ha! One thing you aren't going to be able to do on the cnc is the square corner on the lower horn. There is just no way to cnc that and get a square corner. What software are you modeling that in? When you do finally cut, take lots of pics. I'm into cnc myself and like to see how other people fixture things.
rokeros
Well there are two CNC machines I have to choose from. A huge 3mx5m CNC or a 350mmx450mm CNC. I chose the smaller one because it has multiple changing tools but really because it has vacumn sucktion clamping. Therefore the outline of the body can also be done for you. I can going to cahnge the horns totally because it doesn't fit the hard case I bought for it yesterday. Anyways. May convert the design into a PRS singlecut type/Mcnaught thingy leaving the pointy end. Anyways. THe neck is done. Here are the pics: http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a120/rok...cs/DSC01425.jpg http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a120/rok...cs/DSC01426.jpg http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a120/rok...cs/DSC01455.jpg http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a120/rok...cs/DSC01457.jpg I'm a bit of a photography fan so bear with me if there are too many pics. Here is a picture of the view from my bedroom. Only the 53rd floor. No Biggy. http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a120/rok...cs/DSC01458.jpg Oh, by the way, my mirror covers are done now. They were cut by laser. Including the pickup rings. http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a120/rok...cs/DSC01437.jpg And for those finishing pros here, how do I get rid of the small scratches from the laquer. Polishing with 8000 doesn't do the trick. Only a bit is removed. http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a120/rok...cs/DSC01443.jpg

Probably go straight to a fine compound, if that doesn't do the trick, medium then fine (on a different buff/foam pad for each grit!), finish up with a silicone-free 'show car glaze' polish or similar. Just a general comment here: I really don't see how CNC is necessarily a whole lot faster. I could build that guitar body, if I had more or less full-time to work on it, in a day. Maybe a second day for detailing and the like. 3 days for spraying. Maybe I'm wrong, but I see CNC as a good way to get repeatable, accurate results in a factory setting. For one-off designs, it's very, very accurate, but with the programming lead time, it's not necessarily the fastest way to do things...still, wish I had access to one, even if I doubt I'd use it a whole lot :-) Edited March 13, 2006 by mattia

rokeros
Wow, you know your way around Hong Kong. Sorry its not mid-levels. Its happy valley. And the 53rd floor thingy is just a joke. I live on the 12th. But the building besides me is 77 stories tall. I can take pictures from my window if you dont believe me. but I can't see all the way to the top or my neck will break (for real) Edited March 13, 2006 by rokeros
