chemical_ali Posted December 1, 2003 Report Posted December 1, 2003 i started scalloping a fretboard this weekend... suffice it to say i scratched a couple frets in the process. is there a way i can polish the scratches away? will fine sandpaper do the job? thanks. Quote
krazyderek Posted December 1, 2003 Report Posted December 1, 2003 doesn't the tutorial say to tape them off to protect them? i've used some 1500 grit paper to make frets look a bit better after some "oopsies" Quote
soapbarstrat Posted December 1, 2003 Report Posted December 1, 2003 You should try to burnish them, pressing metal back into itself, if that makes sense to you. That might help a little, or quite a lot, but you'll still need to get rid of any gouges with whatever it takes: burnishing, filing, sanding, steel wooling. Otherwise if a string binds against a defect in a fret, string bending will quickly cause that area of the fret to wear down. Quote
Brian Posted December 1, 2003 Report Posted December 1, 2003 Start with finer and finer grits of sand paper you'll end up polishing them right back to looking right once your down to 2000 grit. Quote
chemical_ali Posted December 1, 2003 Author Report Posted December 1, 2003 i kinda figured that sanding was my only option. i'll post some pics of this incredible scalloping job soon! Quote
DannoG Posted December 1, 2003 Report Posted December 1, 2003 Be sure to tape off the fretboard before you sand, so you don't get fret metal into the wood. Quote
Devon Headen Posted December 2, 2003 Report Posted December 2, 2003 I had the same problem, and I was just gonna redress all the frets...is that a lot of unnecissary work? Quote
Brian Posted December 2, 2003 Report Posted December 2, 2003 Even with double taping the frets to protect them I have occastional frets getting the wrong end of the contour sander. It's just a matter of polishing down the whole board at that point which usually takes care of any imperfections you do to the exsisting frets. Quote
