pour bleeding me Posted January 17, 2004 Report Posted January 17, 2004 hi..im making a string thru pretty soon and im wondering how do they work? how many ferrules does each string need? and where these ferrules go? i thought each string only needed one ferrule...but then i looked at a guitar and i noticed little rings around where the string comes out on top of the guitar and in back where the strings go in? can someone explain how to do this? thanks Quote
Snork Posted January 17, 2004 Report Posted January 17, 2004 its prety much just 6 drill through things. and the balls stay at the end and you have a TOM bridge. its pretty much the same thing, except the bridge is drilled through. Quote
pour bleeding me Posted January 17, 2004 Author Report Posted January 17, 2004 yea i understand the concept but how do you do it? i know you dont drill 6 holes and string it up Quote
Snork Posted January 17, 2004 Report Posted January 17, 2004 pretty much you just drill 6 holes and fit 6 ferrules in there and put your thrings through a TOM and thats about it. i dont know how it intonates or anything. but i think that that depends on the TOM placement as opposed to the string through thing. Snork Posted January 17, 2004 Report Posted January 17, 2004 actually you probably could just drill 6 holes but it wouldnt look very good. you fit them with metal thingies. i dont know where to buy them but you can always make them. Quote
Guest Litchfield Custom Gutars Posted January 17, 2004 Report Posted January 17, 2004 I drill for the 6 strings, the the ferrules. Most have an insert at the top, but you could use some 1/8" brass tubing. If that makes sense to you, let me know. Quote
jbkim Posted January 17, 2004 Report Posted January 17, 2004 Would you drill first (all the way through the body) for the inner diameter of the ferrules then the outer diameter (just the ferrule height?) I'm guessing a drill press is recommended. Quote
pour bleeding me Posted January 17, 2004 Author Report Posted January 17, 2004 ok thanks thats making sense....so where do the ferrules sit? in the middle of the guitar just about or does it matter? and what about the metal rings that protect the top where the come out? just use brass tubing cut to length like you said?thanks alot Quote
jbkim Posted January 17, 2004 Report Posted January 17, 2004 I think someone mention before (maybe it was Litchfield) that they use the ball-ends from bass guitar strings for that. Quote
Guest Litchfield Custom Gutars Posted January 17, 2004 Report Posted January 17, 2004 yes, drill press. Reccomeded do the ferrule recess first. Quote
kickz28 Posted January 17, 2004 Report Posted January 17, 2004 yes, drill press. Reccomeded do the ferrule recess first. Really? I was thinking the opposite. I could drill the string thru then I know exactly where to drill for the ferrule... I guess its part of what makes me a newbie Quote

Guest Litchfield Custom Gutars Posted January 17, 2004 Report Posted January 17, 2004 Hmm. bass string ball ends. Would work. I ve just used the beass tubing. Quote
Page_Master Posted January 17, 2004 Report Posted January 17, 2004 i say get 12 guitar string ferrules. 6 for the back of the body [where the string goes through] and 6 for the front of the body. [where the string comes out] this way you can't go wrong. but i don't know if it is done this way on production guitars, but it sure looks like it is. Quote
Page_Master Posted January 17, 2004 Report Posted January 17, 2004 wow dude, that's a beautiful axe you made there MzI. Quote

arcus94 Posted January 17, 2004 Report Posted January 17, 2004 The string through inserts at the top--yes, ESP, Schecter, Ibanez, etc., etc. use small inserts on the top...I've checked all the parts suppliers and cannot find them--does the brass tubing hold up or should I just use normal ferrules on both sides?
