The basic questions i need answering are whats the best wire to use for guitar electronics i know the its best to use shielded cables for circuitry and any wire will do for earthing etc.. but what size is best diameter wise. Also whats the best Solder to use and size if it comes in sizes, also i have a 25w Solder Iron is this a good size to use. Are there any other bits of kit i should consider getting to do work on my guitar. Any one know any good shops in Uk for parts a wires. Also ive been looking at a Black Ice Capacitor to fit to my tone control will this give me thicker distortion and tone. Thanks guys sorry for all the questions. StratDudeDan Posted April 21, 2004 Report Share Posted April 21, 2004 well, i can't completely answer any of your questions, but welcome. as for the solderring iron, i have a 25w as well, and it works fine. as long as it liquifies the solder and doesn't do any damage to the components, i'm assuming it's gonna work. solder, i use a 60-40 acid based. Just keep that thing away from pc boards - it'll probably peel the traces right off the board (don't ask me how I know that). For those Schottkys, try a BAT-43 or a 1N6263. Forward voltage on them should be less than .25 volts, should work with hotter pickups. Don't expect too much, it's a cheap mod, but fun to try. Also, what about those little signal diodes????? Would they produce an effect? If your pickup output peak to peak is higher than twice the forward voltage of the diodes, they will clip the peaks and give it some grind - whether or not it's tweedy, creamy or crappy depends on your ear. Some small signal diodes are Schottky diodes - just look for the lowest forward voltage you can find. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
