Guest Litchfield Custom Gutars
Looks great. The only thing I'd be concerned about is using a mahogany fretboard. Is it holding up?
daveq
Great work John. What did you use for lacquer (what type/brand)?
feylya
Hey John, where'd you get the wood for all that? Any shops in Dublin or was it internet bought?
john
tsl: yeah i posted it b4, im just showing the build of it incase anyone is interested. im putting together a small website to show friends and relatives and i just completed that page so i said i`d throw it up litchfield: yeah, when i built it i thought the wood was rosewood(it smells like it) but i found out later it was more like mahogany. the wood is showing signs of wear and tear but it seems to be holding up ok. just recently i rubbed some linseed oil into the neck to help preserve it. daveq: the lacquer is u-pol system20 acryllic lacquer as used in automotive refinishing. it takes a while to go fully hard, but it is extremely durable. feylya: nope, found it all!!! im a cheap B*****d. the mahogany was shelving in one of our sheds, the oak was a very old bed head, and the iroko was a leftover from a building site. but i will now have to start buying some nice wood. have you had any luck finding woods in dublin or indeed anywhere in ireland? i beleive mahon or mcmahon timber are good for most hardwoods but i think you have to buy in bulk. thanks all. soon i`ll have a few pics of the fretless bass im working on at the moment
feylya
TBH, I haven't gone looking cos I never have the money for wood. Apparently there's an exotic wood place in dublin. I think that's where we got our mahogany mantle that I just realised would make a lovely neck.......
