  1. Thank you sir Rad. One of my favorite traits of this guitar is the neck joint and its contrast. It always blows my mind how crisp i can get that joint. I just sprayed the first few coats of clear today. Looks like this will actually work! Finally able to get a correct finish on redwood burl.
  2. Yes sir, it is black walnut. I was out of all other neck woods and didnt want to spend more money since i havnt made any, so i used it with some figured maple. The figure doesnt show in the pics for some reason. That shape of volute feels better, because it isnt in the way, even if you try to find it. My main reason was that i want to reduce every single ounce of weight that i can, since these stupid strat shapes keep neck diving.
  3. Here is a project i have been slowly working on. This is one of those projects that comes up around ever 5 guitars or so, where EVERY SINGLE THING goes wrong that possibly could. It came out decent for what all happened, but it was still a pain.
  4. They are supposed to be like that. Jackson and charvel use those types of truss rods. You need a truss rod wrench like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/230958166488?lpid=82 You can find them cheaper though.
  5. Oh, and i have yet again had jointer trouble. The new/old one i got has always seemed to have a vibration issue that causes the pulley on the cutterhead to come loose and outward. It was rattling like crazy a couple weeks ago and i thought the pulley just came loose again. I haddnt used it since then. I went to fix it the other day, and notice it wasnt all the way out like i thought it was. I took the belt off, and the pully was actually broke in half long ways. How does that even happen? I tried to take another one off an old motor we had but it was frozen on there.
  6. Looking unreal as i imagined it. You sir are one gifted person. Even 4 weeks seems like an eternity of waiting for a finish to dry. That is more than twice the time it takes me to build the whole guitar. Even with my 2k cleared sapele SS already shrunk back and is revealing lines and pores.
  7. Got this one pretty much ready to sell. Put the test parts on, played great. Now it will sit here for 4 months like all my other ones.
  8. nope, it is that simple. Just solder them together and add a piece of heat shrink over that part. Then get a bigger piece of heat shrink and heat shrink both wires together down lower.
  9. What grit are you sanding to? End grain can be a pain. On my last grit, i always sand the end grain with the grain, instead along side of it, Which is usually up and down. Are you talking paint primer? I have scratches show up every now and then. The middle grits are really the ones you have to pay attention to.
  10. The best way is is to mask it off the side of the fretboard during the color, take off the tape, then slightly level it to get it a little lower. Then tape off the top of the fretboard and spray the entire side of the fretboard in clear.
  11. That is what i was worried about and was hoping wouldnt happen. Might not be worth the risk.
  12. At this point in my career i am not really looking to go that far. Since i will only be building through the rest of this year, i feel it would be wasted time and effort to try and advertise to the maximum when my career is at its end.
  13. Really? I didnt think that would work with danish. Maybe i'll try that later.
  14. I do too, but to the general market, it is low on the wishlist. Looking at this one side by side the other sapele strat i made, the other one looks more like a high end guitar.
  15. Striking, particulary when compare to the shot of it in its natural habitat. I love what it did to the colors in your neck too. Don't you wish the padouk would stay that way? SR Thanks Scott. I do wish it would stay that color. Here in NM, the sun is so harsh and it is so hot, it will be really dark in a week. It still keeps its red color, but just more of a brick red. Thanks Sancho. People seem to really under estimate veneer most of the time. These were taken while the oil was still soaking in. About an hour later it was already dry ( it was like 98* yesterday) and now the entire guitar is much darker. I leveled the frets and assembled it with my test parts. Now i really wish i had done a clear coat finish on it, because it plays great and sounds great. I always choose the wrong option.
  16. Thanks for the advice. I advertise pretty much only on social media. I have always been able to sell them through there or ebay. I knew making standard shaped guitars would be a problem, there are just too many of them out there. I am going back to building explorers. We only have 2 local music shops here, and only one within 20 miles, and they dont do consignment. I also do not build to order, it is way too stressful, and i promised myself i wouldnt do it again unless it is something i am extremely confident in, which right now, is nothing.
  17. Thanks for the replies. I am just more upset that somebody else is getting credit for my work, and that some places are claiming that they will build you one just like it (claiming they made the original) Again, as far as prices, i am unable to charge more. I cant even get 1000 for the sapele super strat i just built, and it is near flawless.
  18. Finally got the last SS sanded. I decided just to go with a danish oil finish on this one. How about the contrast here?
  19. In the past year or so, i have came across quite a few websites that are offering my guitars for sale (ones that i even still had at the time) and ones from certain sites that claim they are the ones making them. One of the sites i recently found even copied and pasted word for word from my black explorer thread. I also had found a website trying to sell one of the guitars i still had at the time for 4000$, using my pictures and other things. How do you deal with this kind of stuff? I even had one from about 6 years ago show up on ebay, and the guy wouldnt believe i made it because some other website claimed they made it.
  20. Speaking of GOTM, we should just reserve a spot for this guitar on a future GOTM since now.
  21. It was looking great. I am sure it will look even better after you re do it a bit thicker. What camera did you shoot that pic with? It looks great.
  22. But if your hands are on the tool, there is no way they are going to get in the way. its harder to pull or control against the tool than to be the one guiding where the tool goes, IMO.
  23. Looking pretty good so far. Glad you decided to change the heel. I think it looks way better.
  24. I enjoy carving the heel, but i hate carving the neck. I have one sitting there waiting to be carved, but i really dont want to. It takes way too much mental focus, which i do not have these days.
  25. Looks like a great tool at a great price. I personally never understood the need for a pin router though. I prefer to be in control of the tool instead of the workpiece.
