  1. hahaha yeah same type of thing happened to me. They thought I was talking about plastic wood.
  2. Even where I live (Canada), I found it hard to find grain filler and sanding sealer until I knew where to look. First I was only looking at places like Canadian Tire, Home Depot, Kent, and other hardware stores. But I ended up finding what I needed at a special paint store like Benjamin Moore. You might have Glidden or Sherwin-Williams where you are, you might wanna give them a try if you havent already. If all else fails you could try someone like a furniture or cabinet maker, or someone who deals with finishing woods. Good Luck!
  3. Looks Great. That colour is cool.
  4. Started planing the neck today. This is the truss rod I'm planning on getting: http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Truss_rods/Adj...75.html#details From what I understand it shouldnt be too hard to install. I'm trying to decide on whether to do inlays or not. If so I would probably go with abalone dots, just cause they seem the easiest to do. But I dont really have access to a drill press, so, i dunno. If I find someone I know who has a drill press I might ask to use it. I do have a rotary tool though.... Anyway I'm kind of rambling at this point, nothing much to report, just checking in.
  5. I think that stuff should be fine. I couldn't find Titebond, so I got Elmers Probond. It seems pretty good. Like your pic its a professional woodworking glue. I'm no glue expert though so...
  6. This is gonna be an awesome guitar. I can feel it. haha But seriously, I really like the shape, its like a dreadnought meets an iceman. Really cool. And the headstock, come on, thats awesome. Great Job so far! The only thing I was worried about was the upper fret access, just cause in the first pic it looked kida small. But it looks like you've fixed that.
  7. I think in that part he's talking about Rustin's Plastic Coat or something, I think its different than automotive paint. I'd say that a paint job with a clear coat would be much more durable than just paint. I dont have much experience with automotive paints but I think the same would apply.
  8. Great Job J.Crowhurst! I really like the pickup covers without the pickguard, but as has been said, thats just me. What kind of shape are you thinking for the pickguard? The only reason I'm asking is that you've already have the back routed for the controls so I was wondering if your pickguard will actually go around the controls. I think a kind of Les Paul type pickguard that fit the shape of the guitar would be cool. A guy called Pukko is doing a really cool build right now, maybe a picguard like the one he made would be cool. http://projectguitar.ibforums.com/index.ph...31074&st=75 Anyway, as has been said, thats only my preference and its your guitar so take it for what its worth. Keep it up!
  9. I would say stick with half an inch, cause even if it looks better thin to you, it wont matter if you string it up and it snaps. I'd say play it safe if you can.
  10. Glued it up yesterday, hoping for the best! I clamped it using a vice type thing on a black and decker work table. Thanks, yeah I actually may end up with something similar to that, minus the figured maple. I think I may do a scarf joint to have an angled head with mahoghany. Just remembered though that the tuning heads I have are made for non-reverse head. So probably wont do that now that I think about it.
  11. OK, so I decided to go with the 3 piece neck. I cut the walnut lams today: Closeup of the grain: http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x26/WAK...LamsCloseup.jpg I have to cut the lighter piece another day, cause its about to rain.
  12. Maybe if you applied the blue, then sanded back and then applied more of a yellow it would look more like the colour you want. Cause blue and yellow make green, so maybe if it was like a 80% blue 20% yellow or something.
  13. I gotta say that I agree with that, also you dont want something that makes it hard to sit down and play. Apart from that though, the shape is good. Keep it up!
  14. I ordered the Neovins, psyched to get em. Anyway about the neck, I decided I'm gonna use some walnut that I have floating around in the basement rather than a 1 piece maple neck. I still have a couple things to decide though. Heres a pic of the piece: So theres a couple ways I could go with this... You can see I started to make a couple lines with a white pencil. If I were to cut those two rectangles, I would have enough to make the strat neck with a thin lighter piece as the middle lam (it looks like maple but I'm not sure), and a bit of mahogany at the head. I would also have enough walnut to probably make 2 or three fretboards out of the upper left corner in the picture, cause the piece is over an inch thick. What I'm thinking is that after all that, I'd still have enough walnut for a couple lams that I could use for a future neck through. Talk about using every last splinter! OR I could make a solid neck with the walnut and use one of the fretboards, or make a 1 piece walnut neck. I figured it out and if I did this, I think I'd still have enough for the two lams for a neck through. The only problem with these is that the piece is over an inch thick, so I'd have to go get thickness planed. And I dont have a thickness planer. The other problem is that the piece of walnut is slightly warped at the ends, I dont think its enough to make it unusable, but its there. ANYWAY... I am kind of leaning toward the laminate neck with the maple-ish piece running down the middle, because I think it would be easier to build in my circumstance. But I think a solid maple neck, either 1 or 2 piece, would look nicer especially at the head. What do you guys think would look better?
  15. Ibanez has made some pretty good thin guitars.
  16. carlosnelson: Great Job! That looks really nice! Keep it up! GOTM? scab: I would reccomend that you mask off. The extra five minutes it takes would be worth it IMO. I finished a maple fretboard and I tried doing it without masking. I think it would have been a lot easier if I had masked. Maybe I left the clear on too long or something but it was alot harder than I thought to cleanly scrape the clear off the frets. It was kindof nervewrecking cause I dont have much experience doing work on frets. Just my 2 cents.
  17. Theres some good reliced basses in this: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=435082 The guy with the AriaProII bass says he got the crackling with a heat gun and liquid nitrogen. The idea of putting it in the freezer would be ten times cooler though. No pun intended. Yeah I agree that it needs more dirt. +1 for the cigarette burn. EDIT: My bad, didn't see your post zyonsdream.
  18. That plexiglass board was cool, not quite my cuppa, but some cool ideas in there. Too bad he had to screw on the board, I guess it makes sense if you dont want some ugly glue visible under your board. I actually emailed this company called Holbourne Industries that makes hard rubber and asked about ebonite in sheets. They emailed me back and they offer a sheet thats 12" x 12" approx x 1/2" thick which wouldnt be big enough for a board. It costs about 35 pounds, so not cheap. I havent heard of Bakelite though, I'll have to check it out. No way in this life...? Doesn't really strike me as impossible in any way. Fretwire without barbs and slots cut the right size seems like a good way to do it. glue them in http://www.3m.com/US/auto_marine_aero/au0222b.html im sure there is somethign that would work. Yeah that might work.
  19. Yeah that would probably be good. The only problem would be, once your frets have had it, your board has had it too.
  20. OH yeah I know it would be impossible to fret a steel fb. I remember though, there was a thread a while back with someone sho had a link to some ebay auction where they had a metal strat neck. All metal. So theres gotta be a way. It may have been aluminum though. EDIT: found the thread.
  21. Yeah so I was wondering if anybody has used some really out-there fretboard materials. For my next build I really want to find a way to spice it up, so I was thinking of maybe an ebonite or steel fretboard (If I could get my hands on some ebonite, or find a steel fretboard). That got me thinking if there would be some other cool materials for fretboards. Any ideas? Also if anyone knows of a place I could find either ebonite or a steel fretboard, that would be great!
