  1. Continuing my extended break to work on my Jeep and possibly some Holiday stuff. Still lurking though so make sure you keep up the good work. Cheers! --RAD
  2. Eventually. I am currently on a very extended break from guitar work. (Working on my Jeep) Phobos is done and gone (no good pictures). Ryyk is laying on the rack to be finished. Several others are laying in various stages of build process. I think next break I get from work I will clean up the garage and take a look at when and how to finish some of them.
  3. BTW LP are a pita to work on... they are heavy and unwieldy and are prone to bang into things on the bench. I already have a few nicks and bumps in it and I just finished it.
  4. Right now I would say it sounds like a LP with some bite and clarity. The all american Diablos are very very interesting. Not as HiFI as the regulars but very serious low end. Very serious. The open low E will knock your fillings lose. The guitar has a lot more bass to it and some really raunchy mids compared to an S9. Fortunately I finished it right as Phobos came for a tune up so I got to compare the 2 side by side, same amp just switching the chord. It is not clear like an S9 but it is clearer than some other LPs that have come to visit. Overall it sounds like a Hot Rodded Limba LP. That is a good thing.
  5. Almost full dress. I think the knobs are too orange and not dark enough so I am ordering another set. I haven't finished the trussrod cover. I will try and cut it next week. I cut the pickguard down so it fit tighter against the pickups (without rings). Lastly I am probably going to take all the plastic off this thing after I get the pictures done.
  6. Of course it was beautiful this weekend so I went outside to do some of the assembly.
  7. All these parts are going to be a LP at some point. Putting the covers on the humbuckers Tone Pros bridge and tailpiece Using brass inserts and socket head stainless steel screws to mount the pickups. Also I decided against vintage wire inside so here you see the switch wires.
  8. HA HA HA You know I hate finishing...
  9. Fresh off the buffer. About ready for assembly.
  10. One last point I will cover. More voodoo for you. I believe the tighter more connected things are the better. I am not a fan of using string tension to hold things together. Poor break angles and bad designs that rely on string tension usually leads to weird overtones, poor sustain, and general wonkiness. Therefore if given the choice between locking tuners and regular tuners I will take locked. Given the choice I would take a locking headless unit where the strings lock on both ends and the bridges lock in place with a large contact area over a vintage strat bridge with vintage keys. While string length after the bridge and nut drastically affect the slinkyness of the strings it also makes for a technical challenge to keep things in tune and tight. I am not for or against either just very aware of the engineering involved to make each perfect. I have made enough mistakes in this area to have a pretty solid understanding of what I am after from a guitar. Some guys like loose slinky rattle... I am not a fan.
  11. Currently Hipshot and I are on a break. I am sure we will hook up again once and a while but as long term partners I think it might be over. I really like the Hipshot locking tuners. I really like the Hipshot strat bridges. However the Hipshot headless unit is less than one would expect from a company that normally makes incredible products. I have used ABM hardware since the 80s and I really like the quality and the materials. This guitar was originally going to be for me so I used Sperzels and ABM hardware. Sprezels are not better tuners than the Hipshot lockers. They are however lighter. The ABM bridge is a superior design to the Hipshot bridge because of the locking saddles. The Hipshot uses great materials with the brass baseplate and stainless steel saddles that have a nice sound to them. The ABM bridge is all steel and it is awesome when you want a steel bridge. <tone_voodoo> Personally I like the ring of a brass bridges but have found that a locked down steel bridge has a very nice aggressive sound to it. </tone_voodoo> It is probably time for me to start making my own hardware. My goal is to have as much in house as possible and that is probably the next logical step for me.
  12. Yeah that is what I am looking into now. I can't cut and tap aluminum until the finger is better than it is right no so I have to wait to try what I am thinking. I have figured out some things about ergos though from this build. The flat guitar is horribly non ergo. And building this thing all on one plane emphasizes this fact. There is a reason that Toone has been experimenting with arm positioning. If I do it again the arm rest will be angled to keep the arm from reaching around the guitar to play. Also the front horn needs to be behind the plane of the neck. Not the first one but by the last one I forgot.
  13. Still struggling with strap positioning and need to rebuild the neck pickup as it was nothing but parts from the junk box.
  14. Latest updates. Pickups installed wiring done.
  15. Closeup of the recessed bridge Wiring was painful to do but I managed.
  16. Broken pinky update. I can use the hand for short stints as long as I don't bang the pinky into anything. The metal splint is removable so I can work on bending it now instead of waiting 4 weeks. Dr. said I can't hurt it unless I bang it with something so a quick rehab is what I want. Still have a lot of fine tuning to do and the frets need dressing.
  17. With your proximity to EU just pick up an ABM. I really like their stuff.
  18. The next one should be nice. Won't look like a dime store Fender Mustang, were is the racing stripe? Seriously though. I like the flake and can't wait to see a shot of it in sunlight. The design and execution are so good I am now making up stuff to say just to be in the thread with something other than... Awesome!
