  1. oh, i see. i guess it does decrease the tension. btw, thats a damn fine lp maiden.
  2. i could do a confederate flag. in fact i was planning on doing that on an lp eventually.
  3. im not quite getting this correctly. is the string going through the wrong end of the stopbar and wrapped around towards the bridge? or did you actually mean the bridge?
  4. well i really just want a lot of input since i like all the finishes. would it be that hard to airbrush lightning bolts?
  5. im building a dimebag darrell tribute guitar since he was cooler than a lot of the guys who played in the 90's. i just want some feedback on which finish is the coolest. i cant do lightning bolts so theres no arguement there, i just cant airbrush worth anything.
  6. i considered that style before i ever read the post. i think its a toss up between dimeslime(yellow with green burst), southern cross, camo, or playing cards and beer caps. i dont think i have the experience to brush the lightening bolts that he had on his dean from hell. so i guess its just a hard decision ill have to make. i plan on using an original floyd. i also need some help with the pickups. what is the name of the pickup that is cheaper than the dimebucker but was the inspiration?
  7. using a cad from explorer and a v i have made a template of the ml body shape. so now im gonna put the doubleneck project on hold to build this one. anybody got any ideas on how i could finish it? i want to have it compltely planned out before i get started. thats a mistake i made planning the rhoads. i never thought about the cosmetics or other issues beforehand.
  8. i saw it. a good idea. unfortunatly i have to put my doubleneck dreams on hold. im gonna make a dimebag darrell tribute guitar as my next build.
  9. ive seen people build guitars that are way better than the originals. just remember to take your time and spec it out anyway you want. thats the good thing about building it yourself, you can do anything you want to it. so nobody got into to it to build better versions of guitars that have been in decline in quality over the past 20 years?
  10. putting a bit of wax on the threading works. i had the same problem installing one last year. just remember to tap as gently as you can while still applying enough force to press it in.
  11. i would check the warranty info on it to see if the factory will fix that neck for you.
  12. depending on the angle at which they leave the tree, it will more than likely weaken the string at that point and cause breakage more often. also the string at an angle going through the tree will bind during tuning or tremelo use.
  13. im thinking if i could find the cad or a way to to get the shape then instead of a doubleneck i could make an ml like dimebag played. i just need the shape. i couldnt freehand this one so any help would work out. oh yeah and all my guitars have a theme. the shape is a hero and the paint reflects the usage. i did a gold jem to use for showing off. i did a seven string rhoads for writing. im thinking about a doubleneck les paul with a zakk wylde paint job for going from rhythm straight into solos. i would do this one as a complete unadultered tribute.
  14. a few measurements would help. could you measure the scale length and the length, width, and depth of the neck pocket. im sure with those measurements a number of people would be able to give input.
  15. ok, my whole idea has changed up a bit. i just saw an awesome picture of gov't mule a few years ago with james hetfield and they all had their guitars. allen woody was playing a doubleneck les paul jr that had a bass neck and a guitar neck. im thinking i could get away with having it like a flattop les paul special. ill have a 12 string neck and a six string neck. so the same principal but different shape and style. i could make it thinner to compensate for so much mass.
  16. my gretsch double cutaway duojet. its classy, beat to sht, but classy. its got a capacitor switch that lets you switch your tone between caps but i accidentally broke the solder on one so it only plays through one cap. i actually liked the broken sound better than the original sound so i never fixed it.
  17. yeah ive heard a lot of their stuff and i like it. its got that bluesy feel to it.
  18. yeah im kinda reconsidering the body deal. im thinking more mass in the body for evenness. im thinking more like chambered instead of semihollow. not even so that they are just chambers, but maybe just some big cavities for the electronics. maybe not even a carved top. i could get it to look more like a danelectro than a gretsch but with more chunk to it.
  19. ok here is my idea. i just got a bunch of mahogany. id like a lot of input.: 12 strings on top 6 on bottom semihollow duojet body with slight carved top. mahogany back with maple top bigsby on 6 string neck 2 humbuckers for each neck neck switch(3way) 2pickup switches(3way) master volume and master tone for each neck. as thin a body as i can get away with please feel free to add some input or suggestions
  20. when i printed it out i used turbocad and it let me change the scale. its not too big or long a download and its free.
  21. well ive come to terms with the fact that shredders got most of their tricks from classical guitarists. tapping and trem picking and sweeps all came from classical guitar. so maybe we just all go through that period where we wanna go back to the roots of things. so i wanted to learn something that takes some thought and has some history to it and didnt require me dusting off the old nylon stringer. oh, and i just got john 5's new album. this guy went from playing in marilyn manson to doing country and blues inspired prog metal sounding guitar songs. its really inspiring me. that and ive always loved the allman brothers and lynyrd skynyrd. led zeppelin was from britain and they even got in on the country and blues thing. i bought a danelectro dc-3 because jimmy page had dc-2 and i just realized it sounds great for slidework. thats exactly why he had it too. have you heard some of these slide guys? thats some speed and talent that rivals steve vai, and i dont usually compare to anyone to vai. i just found an old ernie ball recording that my grandparents had. its really making me reconsider my basis in music. its a challenge too, its been a while since ive had a good challenge.
  22. i like the brightness of maple. when i built that body it wasnt just the brightness of maple as a whole that i was after. my friend had a stack of maple laying around and he said it was unusually bright for his tastes so he gave it to me in return for a piece of walnut. it was a lot more crisp than any other guitar i had owned so i switched the baritone neck onto it and i loved it. its a bit harder to explain what exactly i heard in the maple that i hadnt heard in any of the other bodies that ive built. it couldve been partly caused by my unusual choice in pickups for that body. i used two hot rails and an invader. i guess it just evened out. the maple i used was pretty light too. maple is just one of those woods that gets an extrremely bad rep, but i would choose maple over mahogany for low tuned stuff.
  23. that tip helps a lot. i was wondering if i should do that. the radio on the fritz sound seemed a little weird as i only really ever heard the overtones on led zeppelin recordings. i was also getting just as much overtone from the string behind the slide than i was from the string in front of it on my smaller strings up towards the end of the fretboard. the only problem i see is its a little hard to do and sometimes it dampens the strings. i guess ill just play around for a little while. in the meantime ill just google it and see if i can find some tutorials.
  24. if it helps you out i have a baritone strat. it didnt start out that way though. it started life as an alder strat with a regular maple neck. i wanted to play baritone so i made a baritone maple and rosewood neck. the alder wasnt the most responsive for what i wanted so i made a maple body for it. the maple is tight and responsive. so i hope that helps. ps. after the whole transfer i now have two strats and i play like a bass player on the baritone. its tuned g-g. its very responsive(not muddy) and crisp even when popping and with loose strings. the only problem is its halfway across the united states right now so i havent played it in a few months.
  25. thanks for the tips. i played around at guitar center the other day and liked the way a metal slide sounded with my dano and gretsch. im thinking about tuning my danelectro to open g and just whitlling away with that. the touch part is what was getting me mostly. the action is set up particularly high on all of my guitars so it shouldnt be too long before ive got it down. just some practice and some good music is all i need.
