  1. i agree wholeheartedly on rosewoods being the most musical of woods. maybe not for a solidbody electric guitar, but instruments as a whole. only on grounds that someone builds a guitar entirely out of rosewood and lets me play will i extend my opinion to the world of guitars. but here is why i agree that some rosewoods are the ultimate known tonewood for classical instruments: we all have to remember that for most of us money and weight are an issue as a guitar body takes a large amount of wood. rosewoods are one the best woods to make an instrument out of as it has a nice solid grain to it and carries better frequencies with less wavering. i just got finished taking a music history class at the university of memphis over the summer and they took a while to describe woods as they pertain to the historical construction of ideophones and woodwinds. rosewood is most common in small woodwinds because it is more cost effective to have such a wood in smaller portions and it carries the frequencies of higher ranged instruments better than most other woods that you couldve found in the era and known world. ideophones are a different case as it isnt as cost effective to have a dalbergia because the keys can be anywhere from 5 inches to a foot long but it has been done before and worked. over the past centuries you see less rosewood and more cost effective materials in such instruments, tuned ideophones now even have keys made of fiberglass as it can be wound tighter. the solidbody guitar is one such instruemnt. its just not cost effective to yield enough rosewood to make entire body blanks. classical guitars can because the wood is thinner and not entire chunks are needed. there are woods that are cheaper and produce similar and sometimes better qualities than dalbergias and some would even say they look a whole lot better, who am i kidding flamed maple looks amazing. just remember we all are partial to different sounds. some prefer the sound of a mahogany body that produces nice muddy lows and some would prefer the sound of an entire maple body as it is tighter and has a nice high end as well as a nice crisp low end. now im not saying that rosewood is the best bet for a solidbody electric guitar and i dont want to fuel an already sparked fire and arguement. all im saying is rosewood has proven to be a good tonewood for instruments in the past who knows how long. just remember we dont all hear the same thing out of our guitars. i prefer the old mahogany with a maple cap. its cost effective and it sounds great. i also love the sound of walnut as a top wood. i played a carvin semi acoustic with a walnut top and the sound was amazing. i guess its just all in your ears. i have a basswood jem that i love. its just good to create the sound that im after. its just one arguement that im not willing to be a part of because there is a difference between my tastes and someone elses tastes in guitar woods. there is just a point where we have to look past the guitar and into history. rosewood has stood the test of time as it comes to instrument woods. it has affected the world of guitars if only as back and side portions and fretboards. in my most humble of opinions i would listen to the most widely accepted descriptions of what different woods sound like and consider the cost and choose by what meets your own needs for the instrument. im not an expert on woods so im still searching for exactly what i need in a guitar. it just all comes down to what you need out of the guitar and how much your willing to spend.
  2. i love it. those are some great inlays too. nice body shape.
  3. ok, metal was fun for 10 years, now its time for some diversity. i want to learn slide. im thinking the slide part in free bird is a good easy part to start with, is this right? my technique isnt so great so could anyone give me tips or maybe a site with tips. thanks in advance -bobby
  4. i know who youre talking about, i just compltely forgot his name. if i cant find it its no big deal, i just needed a rough template to go by.
  5. all i can say is wow. not what im into. but thats some talent right there. i had a hard time beveling the edges on my rhoads v. i cant even imagine having that task at hand.
  6. i hear ya on that one. im counting down the months until i leave school. once im out i can finally stop mooching off other peoples tools. my finances are everything left over from basic needs. i got really lucky finding that wood for so cheap because my guitar building experience is based on getting that little bit of extra cash scrimpin and savin. right now ive hit a bump though, tuners, new valves for my amp, or a ring for my girlfriend. it sucks having a life, a job, a girlfriend, a great hobby, pets, family, school, school band, church band, and hopefully a future gigging with my real band happening all at the same time. but this may have to be my last full build project for a while as im trying to get a job modding and doing repair work. but hey thats life. i cant complain this is the greatest hobby in the world and better therapy than you can buy. i never wanted a guitar when i started out, i just wanted something to do that i could enjoy. two builds later and im completely hooked. it really is addictive. its a great feeling knowing that youve accomplished something especially during hard times with school and work.
  7. yeah you need to choose a headstock that is a little more dangerous. i love the body shape though its one of your coolest ones from what ive seen.
  8. reminds me of that darkness video where they were hunting and they had the les pauls as guns. but anyway who cares the point is everyone is here to learn something, its just there is a difference between pointing out something of difference and being an utter arse. thats why i dont even ask questions anymore. its just the f'ing internet if you cant help someone without shooting their balls off than just shut up and dont say a word its in the rules anway that the golden rule still applies, so if you cant say anything nice then just move on. its not worth getting into a fight with someone who is on the other side of the globe just because you cant tell a joke from seriousness on something written in pixels on a machine that shows no emotion.
  9. its just seems to me like lately one question leads to big discusiion about everything other than the question. thats why i dont even post my questions anymore i just pm someone who might know the answer. all everyone has to do to keep it from becoming a a heap like hc is keep the wandering and shennanigans down to a minumum. other than that this place has saved my life on may an occasion and im thankful i didnt have to go ask my churchs resident prs junkie who blabbers about bs he doesnt know about. if it wasnt for being on here i wouldve never even come close when building the guitars ive done.
  10. i always thought you tied string to the pots and pulled them each through the holes one by one
  11. it amazes me how long it takes in this forum for a clear answer. so ill clarify things so as not to deter someone else from posting question ever again. so now the options are as follows and being shown off by our beautiful show model vanessa: block the trem with wood(easy to reverse, still a knife edge) fill the hole with a basswood plug and install a hardtail(hardtail sustain, irreversible without the use of a router and hours of work) use a product that isnt available to the general public but hopefully soon will be if we all have any luck and god answers some of our pleas and prayers(may take a while for real results per my last sentence) am i missing anything?? now play nicely everyone, this isnt harmony central
  12. thats exactly what i was getting at. ive watched people get harassed for having good ideas or wording a sentence weirdly. too many people in the members section have posted like 5 times and were never heard from again.
  13. so someone said ed roman, but no one said warmoth.com, they may be pretty expensive but they are pretty high quality and you can add any option you want. is building the body yourself completely out of the question???
  14. im just saying, if you buy a stock prs your not getting a custom guitar youre getting the closest thing they can get to please buyers. you dont get a choice. i have binding on one of my guitars and it has saved the edges from getting knicked from many a fix in the past, including a weird incident with a sword. if you buy a custom guitar youre getting a choice which means if you want a real animal skull in the back with a plexiglass window and light up toilet seats for inlays then you will get it if you pay for it. plus most real players dont want to take a 4000$+ guitar on tour or even practice on it. what is the point in having something that youre afraid to actually play?
  15. i love it. its rare that i actually see a bass shape that i love. anything to me is better than the ol' p-bass. you nailed it. if you do manage to get a good pic of the finish do post it, id love to see it in all its awe and glory.
  16. i was about to ask how many strings he planned to put on it.
  17. yeah i have a feeling this is gonna be a better guitar than my last one because its a good combo and will definitly have some great sustain. if you dont care about white versus black than there is a guy on ebay who sells some great limba pieces that are in the midrange between the two colors and grain variances, but its been a while since ive seen him on there. he gets it for free and sells for extremely cheap because guitarists usually only want white or black and not a mix. ill pm you the guys handle on ebay and store name if you want it. i just have to look through my ebay history and find it. i love the shape too. its a bit easier to sit and play if you dont mind the ackwardness of having the neck that far to the left. oh and the official finish is now dark hunter green with yellowish brown vines and light green leaves and purple/maroon flowers with an yggdrasil/norse motif. my friend is also gonna paint a hot faerie chick on the back just to make things a little more sexy, not that a solid korina rhoads with seven strings isnt already guitar porn in the first place, but shes kinda gonna be like a bomber girl for my band. im almost ready to start on the case. i just bought a big sheet of hardboard. i need something to keep me moving and shaking while i wait for the pickup and wiring stuff. oh how the wait is killing me. i want this thing finished and in a coffin case by the time my next school term begins so i can play it at school.
  18. the neck is going to to be sanded down some more, but i prefer a neck to be a little thicker than a les paul so its still going to be pretty substantial. its going to be a dark hunter green, i just wanted something that wasnt black. all my guitars are black and even though its my favorite color i think its time for a change. though i do have a danelectro that has glitter in the black paint.
  19. if you plan on playing power chords on the bottom than it should be F# for it to line up correctly.
  20. i finished shaping the neck. its ultra thick right now. i may get it a bit thinner but i like a thick neck. once my pickup and electronics arrive im going to route the cavities, install the truss rod, add the fretboard, and do the finish. pic1 pic2 pic3 pic4 pic5 any comments or advice would be well appreciated.
  21. have you ever played black/backs? they sound great, not my cup of tea but definitly worth the money and from what my ears heard sounded better than stock prs pickups. i wouldnt buy them, but still if it were up to me i would rather have them than the prs pickups. then again id never have a prs anyway, im not into pieces of art that happen to play music, i want a guitar that im not afraid to play.
  22. i do see the potential problems with keeping it in order, but i can handle that. i cant stand fender these days. people just want something that has proven the test of time. no one is willing to go the extra mile and experiment. i understand what your getting at and what i said was just a joke, but seriously a guy can experiment. i wouldnt use all the miniswitches, but i have many guitars with lots of different switching. i took a stock gretsch and replaced the pickups and pots to where i can get out of phase for every possible combination. its not that hard to keep it in order and some of the combos i dont even use, but its just having that extra ability to flip a switch to get a desirable tone instead of having to change guitars. the only problem im having is getting the sound of two entirely different guitars out of one guitar, but that will be remedied when i start on a doubleneck.
  23. ive seen really crappy sounding deteriorating paf pickups go for almost 200$ on the bay. when if you really think about it the materials in the pickup are half destroyed and its about worth 10 or 20$. just because something sounded good 40 years ago doesnt exactly mean its worth the extra money because its a piece of history. i wouldnt buy anything used anyway, unless i had a chance to test it. im sure the old fool who bought those old paf's was pretty happy when he heard all the microphonic feedback. oh yeah, and i would seriously go for the tone pros. the fact that it locks makes it worth the money in my mind.
  24. that was a huge bump. look at the dates
  25. the only thing that makes ed roman a nutjob is trying to take the attention in the market away from the industry standard and implant his idea of the perfect guitar into your head. i think some idiots are taking the whole thing entirely too far making them no better than the man himself. there is no hype involved in buying something that ed roman doesnt want you to buy but will sell you anyway for cheaper than you would get a chance at. people are allowed to have their own opinions on what is good. ed roman needs to get that through his skull and so do certain people on this forum. just because you have an opinion of e.r. being a crock doesnt make you special or any better than he is by trying to impress your idea of what is necessary or worth it onto other people.
