  1. that can only be done if the fingerboard is extended.factory 22 and 24 fret necks are different overall lengths in most instances.that's why they offer the extended fingerboards.you can extend the neck pocket but only if no pickups are in the way.(by the way i measured both types of necks on my ibanez, schecter, and fernandes to make sure before i posted)
  2. hell dcord you sound like me!my wife calls me proffesor grammer and has forbidden me to correct hers.(i am however not proffesor speller so she gets hers in too) p.s.i bet you really get pissed off watching ricki lake or jerry springer
  3. don't forget to stain again after sanding the first application of stain. stain sand stain sand stain sand until satisfied.
  4. yes ash.i have a baseball bat that looks just like that and it's ash.
  5. i just recently tried out a bc rich virgin with a maple thru neck and mahogany body(and dimarzio distortion pickups).the tone was mild but clear(alot like a crisp les paul)and the sustain was awesome.i didn't find it too bright at all.
  6. the purpose of a roller nut is to prevent the strings from sticking like happens on a regular nut.when you turn the tuning keys your strings stick a little in the grooves which makes tuning a little more difficult.alot of people go below pitch with each string and then bring it up to correct pitch to help.(i hope i am being clear)a roller nut prevents this by making a frictionless connection.alot of people use them with a wilkinson or similar tremelo instead of a locking nut. i think what you are talking about with the neck screws is a washer type piece called a neck mounting ferrulle.you just countersink a hole to the same depth as the ferrule so it sits flush.(stewmac.com-hardware) versatile single coils:emg s,duncan cool rails, hot rails,etc... everything else is not my department.hope this helps
  7. it's kind of strange,i just surfed around trying to find pricing info and nobody wants to say their prices.they want you to call.i think emg has asked everyone not to post prices.but anyway it might pay to call and shop around.i know that the list price is high but many guitar parts shops sell for way under list price.about 6 months ago i was shopping for pickups and i found many places selling the emg-s for around $50 to $60.honest.and every emg pickup you buy comes with it's own tone and volume pots and a stereo jack and wiring all included so i think it's a really great deal.and the truly exellent thing about them is a total lack of background noise.i understand that is still kind of expensive.i too have to save up to afford premium pickups.i guess that's why they call it a dream guitar.try guitarpartsonline.com.i got emg 81s from them for $75 once.and list price is almost double that
  8. you can get pretty close to that sound you're looking for with passive single coils and a good rack space eq.that should boost the mid range as much as you could ever want.i am constantly amazed at how much a good eq can improve an amps sound.and mine only cost about $100 for 2 channels. i am curious though, emg single coils are fairly inexpensive and woudn't an active boost cost just as much?by the way i'm sure you know but just in case;emg has a prewired david gilmour pickgaurd which is under $200 and would get you where you want to be.very high quality stuff too.i ordered the kh 2 and the wiring is top notch.plus the tone and volume pots that come with it are premium quality.if you shop around you might find it cheaper than that.
  9. they are both great pickups with great tone but the evolution is a lead players pickup with decent bite and great mids while the duncan custom is a dryer more rythm oriented pickup.of the two i like the duncan best and it is made in u.s.a if that's important to you.to me the duncans seem to be of a higher quality with better magnets.i had a dimarzio tone zone which sounded great when i bought it but now(10 years later)is too weak for anything i need it for.
  10. this guitar was shimmed on the side of the neck not the bottom.if i paid big bucks for any guitar regardless of the name on it i would expect the tolerances to be tighter than that.i am telling you that the neck pocket on that guitar was a full 1/32 of an inch bigger than the neck.if that doesn't matter to you,by all means spend as much as you want.but tighter tolerances mean more consistant sound and a better feeling instrument.try to remember that some people can hear the difference in a guitar based on temperature and humidity, while the majority of people can't even distinguish between alder and basswood.(big difference trust me)
  11. neither one of those has the attack and definition needed for slayer.what you have to remember is that even though some of slayer's songs are fairly straightforward, the majority are not.take alter of sacrifice or war ensemble for example.both have a root on the #6 string with counterpoints on other strings.the problem comes when you play these songs at the speeds they do the notes start to blend, sounding very muddy.then you have to back off on your distortion level in order to get the clarity needed, which takes away some of the aggression.in my opinion as a slayer fan and someone who plays their songs on a daily basis(for over 13 years)i can tell you that if you try to play these songs without emg 81s you will only go crazy trying to play them without sounding muddy.i just switched over to emgs about a year ago and found out i was a whole lot better than i thought i was.even my buddies who don't play guitar noticed the difference right away.trust me.if you have never tried them go to a music store that carries the esp hanneman or the kirk hammett model(with the 81s)and check it out.the ONLY way to play slayer or anything like it.but for mettallica or pantera or such any old high output pickup will do.
  12. even if it looks fine it could be a bad solder connection at the bridge.that's what it sounds like to me.
  13. you can use a tune o matic bridge combined with string thru body.and yes you can recess a tune o matic.if you do go that route i highly reccomend tone pros tune o matic.it costs more but it connects tightly(with allen screws)to the inserts which does increase sustain.and don't overlook the pickupsfor extra sustain cause that makes a BIG difference.the most sustain i ever got out of a pickup is through a dimebucker.do you want sustain for clean playing or crunch?if crunch don't forget about sustain pedals.also look at the fernandes sustainer pickup for neck.works well and has a great tone when used in pickup mode.word of caution though it doesn't sustain chords only single notes.also zoom has great distortion for metal which sustains great too.(if you haven't noticed i love sustain.)also body wood makes a difference.basswood sustains well but doesn't have great tone.
  14. i agree.craftsman has a good bandsaw for under $400.on a related note is a 12" bandsaw big enough to manuever a body through?it looks like it but i just can't tell for sure.
  15. i find that basswood has almost no mids,so is great for hard rock, heavy metal, but it is not at all sweet sounding.and also when you finish it no grainfiller is needed.

check out that quilt! (scroll down to the bass)
  17. three words...OH MY GOD! talk about raising the bar
  18. i like the first one,the second is just too big i think.but if you were doing a guitar with a three way toggle switch on the upper horn you could surround the toggle with that design
  19. i am sceptical of the new floyd.as much as a string stretches it seems like you would run out of adjustment at the bridge.plus what happens if they have a bad string that is slightly the wrong length?i will always want tuners on my headstocks.
  20. just gotta say scott,gr8 name on ebay
  21. yeah it ended 2 hours after i tried to put the link up.i just wish i had the money available.that's a great price for that guitar.
  22. warlock why can i not get a link to work?i suck at computers!
  23. yeah g you're right that's the one.and rich you mentioning the firecrackle brings back memories too cause i liked that one but the other one was cheaper so was more realistic for me to want.it's funny cause back then you couldn't get a decent guitar cheap but now you can get all kinds of nice ones for under $500.i guess korea is good for something.
  24. yeah scroll saw is what we call it too.
  25. ya know rich i don't even remember what model it was i just remember it was a white strat-style guitar.at the time all i knew about guitars was i wanted one and couldn't afford it.funny story though, one time my cousin wanted a guitar for christmas and my grandparents got him a mickey mouse guitar out of the sears catalog.i mean an actual plastic disney made "guitar"with a picture of mickey mouse in his wizard outfit.it had plastic cords for strings which were all the same size so needless to say it was never made to be played, only played with by like 4 or 5 year old kids.i have never seen anything so horrible in my life.needless to say i knew better than to ask for one myself.
