I know stanley are not what they once were but I'd say John was right sounds like your screw has become a bit loose there needs to be a bit of rounding to the swich to allow it to rock and lock into place! When this happens on mine I like to take the whole thing apart and give it proper clean down and remove the crud thet invariably gets stuck in the cracks and on the threads. I tighten up the screw so i can't operate the switch and then slacken it off until I can lock it down with just my thum while I hold the handle as if to plane.
  2. I'd agree with the 96k absolutely! I wasn't trying to suggest that numerous mics was worse just that they are not necessary to record a top quality drum track and provided you have a good ear you can set up the microphones so that EQ is barely necessary! It all depend how you work and what you want out the other end. At college we had pro level studios mixers tape machines etc. fun but I was much happier in the smaller demo type studios with just a small mixer and an eight track reel to reel analogue tape machine a band that knew their stuff were tight and in tune and go for a live take. you have to be more creative but man it sounds good when you get it right!
  3. You'll not blow the preamp its just a microphone just treat it how you'd treat any microphone start with zero gain and build it up and avoid hitting the cone when the gain is well up!   5. much easier to machine a tapered cone than splines (going back hundred + years ago) It's quick to swap parts (if you have two chucks imagine the difference swapping two chuck complete with bits than swapping the bits! it always centres/can't go on squint. All this and it works! genius! you should shock it onto the shaft using a hammer it how its designed to be done!
  6. I haven't actually made one. I'v only used one when mucking about ages ago and that was just a spare car speaker cone attached to an xlr and fired into the mixer there is probably a huge impedence mismatch but it sounded huge! (you need another mic to get the click of the initial hit) you can also run your finger on the cone and tap it but watch your levels! I'm pretty sure muse have done this for one of their albums if you google it you might find out more my initial search came out with the yamaha sub kick and hme made equivalents which fix the speaker in a small drum. A guitar driver i would have thought didn't have a good enough frequency range I'd more inclined to grab an old hi fi speaker (the classic is to use a Yamaha NS10 monitor). Secondly you need to remove the speaker form the cab to allow the driver to move freely (a sealed box especially would be like having a big cushion behind it!) just like a neuman type capsule. I've also used microphonic guitars (tune the strings and you can get weird filtering effects and headphones for a really nasty cheap sound!)

  8. Mickguard. The idea of using three microphones is an old and very very good idea (think of all the motown!) set it up as you suggest and move all the microphones until you get a good balance. or what you can also do is stick two microphones in a stereo pair where they sound good with the whole set and mic up the snare and the kick just to add that little bit extra as necessary as they are the most important rythmwise. The more mics the more time you spend mucking about trying to sort phase issues! another option is to use a mixer for the drums using loads of mics and mixing them down and recording that. If you like a huge kick sound rip apart an old speaker and use the woofer as a huge passive microphone! There is an excelent book we used as a text book at college. Modern Recording Techniques by David miles huber and Robert E stein. would be well worth a look. it covers everything you would need to know from mics to acoustic treatments etc but its not annoyingly technical! found a link for it here ="http://www.modrec.com/excerpt.html"]http://www.modrec.com/excerpt.html thats not a particularly good excerpt they have up though!

  10. ofcourse what you should have done is just heavy relic the original body as it was thus creating your own interpretation! I don't care what you do as to the logo. But why put in all the work just to say its a fender when you are done it won't be a fender it won't be squire it will your own guitar be proud of what you do slam your name all over it! "my flick o flasho ocaster" sounds alot better than "my squire i totally changed and then stuck a fender logo on it caster" I just doodled you user name in fender style it looks pretty cool! and you get double F most men would kill for that!
  11. not if you have them in open tunings! or like a bul bul tarang and tune them all to the same note! I know I saw some tiny metal gears somwhere a bit strange recntly I'll think about it and let you know if i remember! I have to say I'm really impressed the detail is quite amazing!
  12. I have something very similar (i think I can't quite decide it's certainly not as bad) on my washburn. I just ignore it it was a pretty cheap guitar!

Okay now I'm safely out of harms way I'll tell you what guitar i find truely offensive to the eye *big breath* PRS guitars specifically the carved "swimming pool tops" in a wide variety of blue models! And others of their ilk Nothing against PRS I have a santana SE which i love and is only really beaten in the looks department by a lespaul junior double cut or a telecaster I am definately about the stripped down rock and roll guitar. I can always wear my mums jewellery if a i want something a bit sparkly on stage. Yes there are things I'd change on a telecaster but purely cosmetically the clean lines and the beauty of the economic design push my buttons! But for truely hideous guitars no one has mentioned the artist formally known as squiggle and his hideous harem of axes.

  16. Thats awesome! I was looking at bits of scrap wood and thinking about an electric mandolin in the shape of a les paul or a les paul double cut as shown in melvyn hiscocks book!

  18. I just did a wee google for images of the guitar i came up with two shapes a regular sort and an art deco stepped one what were you looking for? Why don't you come up with your own shape make it a little unique?
