  1. Hello! Melyn Hiscocks book "Make your own electric guitar" is considered probably the best guitar making book on the market. Its very easy to usderstand, and thorough. Definately worth getting Luke

  4. Hi everyone, I was wondering- what is the best way to polish gold plated hardware? Way back, I used to use furniture polish to remove smudge marks from my goldplated Pafs and tunomatic- After a year or so, I had rubbed through the plating in several areas. THe furniture polish seemed to make the plating a bit 'bubly' (like it needed a sand down)- evenually the parts of the hardware where the gold had been removed developed a greenish tinge. What is the best way to remove smudges and polish gold parts without removing the finish? Thanks guys, Luke
  5. I guess another problem would be 'positions 2 and 4' on the strat. I dont really think you can get those sounds using a Les Paul- coil tapping or no. However, I *realy* hope someone can prove me wrong on that- please tell me if anyone has any tricks! Luke

  7. Just a thought, but why dont you just buy a neck and body, and then choose the electronics and harware seperately. That way, its exacly what YOU want, rather than just whatever is included in a kit. I bet you will be happier with the results as well. Just a thought, Luke
  8. I noticed that too Greg, but I wasnt going to say anything, haha Perhaps the most important feature of a finish is that it protects the wood. I actually remeber when the N4 was released, there was alot of talk about whether or not the instruments should have been finished. I also remeber reading another tip- applying talcum powder to a neck with no finish. Doest affect (or protect) the timber, but its supposed to make playing much smoother (I think that was in Matt Bruck's GW column). But still, looks cool man. Luke

  10. I believe that so many players dont know how to play strats. To me, the sound of the strat is versitility- all of the great strat players i can name give the pickup selector one hellva workout, near all the time. To me, THIS is what makes a strat sound so great- the contrasts of availible tone. I dont like the sound of someone just using the bridge pickup of the strat for every song- it gives me a real hedache. That said, the fatness, warmness and power of a paf or P90 equpt Les Paul is my personal favorite, time and time again. I think, with the exeption of the 335, that this is the most majestic guitar tone i have ever heard. From Ronson's work with Bowie, to Aerosmith, the stones, Slash, and one million others, I fell that this is my favorite sounding guitar. Luke

  12. Hi, I dont think there was anything that special about it- I believe the issue is the extra strain on the neck. I think, by asking questions here, you could certainly make an 8 string bass. If you are seroius about building on though, DEFINATELY get thjat book. Luke
  13. Does anyone remeber those kits you could buy YEARS ago- I think it was a Rolls Royce grill for minis? That would be pretty funny to get, if you ask me. I think it was meant to be comical, not serious.
  14. hi man, as you have said its your first project, I would suggest making a pedal using one of the schematics at www.runoffgroove.com They have schematics, sound samples AND photos/or drawings of what your circiut board should end up looking like. It will make trouble shooting your pedal (you will have to debug your 1st pedal- EVERYONE makes a mistake ot two on thier fisrt pedal) MUCH easier to do. I wish that site was like that when I first attempted making my one pedals. I BEG you- make one of the pedals from that site- you wont regret it. Luke

  17. Hi Actually, that photo is of the bridge for the sympathetic strings of the sitar. the strings you actually play have a larger bridge. There is no reason why it wouldnt work, but the bone bridge material is relitively soft. There is also the issue of no adjustable height. Might be interesting though. Luke

Hi man, I actually own a sitar, and from the looks of the tele saddles, they work on the same principle as a sitars bridge (or jawri [spelling] ) Basically, the saddle is long and flat (instead of sharp like a guitars[ by sharp, I mean that the string starts vibrating from the point of the saddle to the nut). However, on a sitar, the string rests along the saddle. The string vibrates against the saddle, giving that sitar buzz. Does that make any sense? Luke
  19. The Gibson reissues? Pfft! A few years ago, I A/B-ed an old gibson amp against one of those 'Goldtone' series. It was like night and day- like the difference beween a JCM800 and a valvestate. I was told that it was some trace elliot design (or the same amps designers designed it). Not at all worth the price, IMHO. The reissue wasnt as responsive, was more compressed and was far more brittle upon break up. Cant remeber the vintage model, but that was, to be honest, a VERY good sounding amp. Luke
  20. Hey man, I am pertty sure that string tension (in regards to strings of the same tuning/gauge) are relative to pitch- higher tention, higher pitch. I dont think the problem you are describing is due to the different scale legnths- it probably doesnt help, but I doubt the Ibanez's scale legnth (25 1/2 ?) would make as much difference as you have described (compared to the LP ) Hows the action differ on the guitars? Maybe the action on your Ibanez is high- I have run to an Ibanez like that- how much clearance is there between the strings on each guitar and their respective 12th fret? Hope thats a help, Luke
  21. i could be wrong, but it sounds to me like you may have a 21 fret neck, with a 22 fret 'added' where the overhang would normally be. Is this right? Luke

  23. Hi man, I may very well be wrong, but there may be a bleed problem with the veneer. I dont think you can sucessfully get a straight distinction between the lines of the flag- I think the colors may bleed together and make a mess. I also dont know if you can stain the veneer black to bring out the grain. Depending on the thickness of the veneer, the stain will probably saturate the veneer to the point that you will sand away the veneer before you even come close to getting rid of the black.   24. Is it just me, or is there 1. 2 new members wanting logos/ change the name on headstock 2. Both for left handed guitars 3. One owns a real Gibson, and wants to add a fake name to a Gibson copy, and the other owns a real Ibanez, but wants to change the logo to a Jem. Either thats quite the coincidence, or.... Anyway, Luke
